"The Impossible Dream" catamaran for people with disabilities participated in the Sol al Sol regatta   LINK
TVIM reports that although the position of the sailboat "Impossible Dream" in the Sol al Sol regatta wasn't one of the best, their outstanding participation for the first time in this competition has brought them a great deal of attention, since this is a catamaran designed for people with disabilities.
"The Impossible Dream" is a nonprofit organization that was started several years ago. The catamaran is unique and was built in 2002 especially for Mike Browne, a Brit who is a paraplegic since an accident. He wanted a boat that he could navigate independently on the sea, and so he decided to order one that was custom built especially for him.
The vessel is 60 feet long, 27 feet wide, with a mast that is 80 feet tall. It is spacious, stable and fast. It was designed to be equally accessible for all types of people, but especially for those who are in wheelchairs.
It has three hydraulic lifts; one to move between the boat and the dock, and one on each side of the main cabin that descends to the area below where the four cabins and two bathrooms are located.

Moments of anguish at Punta Sur
The Naval Search and Rescue unit did not have to mobilize, after they were alerted on Tuesday, when the captain of a dive boat lost sight of five divers, and called them on the telephone. Fortunately, the divers reappeared after a few minutes, and no assistance was needed. The tourists apparently were unaware of the situation. One of the lanchero sailors said "When there are times that you lose the bubbles of the divers, those are moments of fear."LINK

Isla Mujeres taxi drivers demand position on Uber and accountability
The group of taxi drivers who complained to the Director of the Taxi union, Jose Magana Galue, at the taxi stand office, were demanding accountability and answers concerning the last four months that he has been in office. Some of them are supporters of the former union leader, Eduardo Peniche Rodriguez, aka "Wato". They specifically asked about four concessions in Playa del Carmen and about the Director taking a stand against Uber.
Mr. Magana Galue answered that he is still waiting for Mr. Peniche Rodriguez to deliver the accounting documents. The current Director said that when he took office, the union had many debts and no money, and he has been covering the outstanding debts little by little. He said he has never endorsed the entry of Uber and will always be in favor of what is best for the taxi drivers. He said he regretted the attitude of many of the union members, who are friends of Wato, but they are not telling the truth about what has been happening.  LINK

Isla Mujeres celebrates Sea Turtle Week
Sea Turtle Week in Quintana Roo is being held for the second consecutive year, with the goal of raising awareness about the importance of the protection and preservation of sea turtles. Isla Mujeres is one of the important nesting and conservation sites in the state for these species.
As part of this week's activities, on Thursday at 8am, personnel from various governmental agencies and volunteers cleaned the "La Guadalupana" beach, which is the most important nesting beach on the island.
The nesting season is from May 15 to October 15, when the turtles lay eggs on the eastern side of the island (which are collected by Tortugranja staff and volunteers, and relocated to the incubation pen, in the sand outside the facility).
Carlos Barranco García, municipal director of Environment and Ecology, said that several sectors of the island society are participating in the clean-ups, which will be carried out daily and at all of the beaches where the turtles nest. He said, "One of the most important activities for Sea Turtle Week is raising awareness among the community, and for that reason we will be doing guided tours at the Tortugranja with students from the island and the Continental Zone, so they can see the turtles up close and become interested in their conservation."

The Cocteleros of Picus won Sunday's game against the Cancun Astras with a score of 13-3. The Cocteleros are undefeated and in first place as the teams go into the semifinals. They also celebrated Dia de los Ninos with a raffle of gifts. Reported by Isla Mujeres al Dia.

Children's Fair Today/Friday "Play & Learn Your Rights"
Everything is ready for the children's fair "Play & Learn Your Rights" which will be held today at 5pm at the "El Pescador" baseball field (in front of Chedraui). There will be various activities and games, in which the rights of children will be disseminated in a didactic manner.
This event is being presented by the DIF social service agency in conjunction with SIPINNA, the Municipal System for the Protection of Children and Adolescents. The goal is to strengthen families and to provide the tools and information that are necessary to encourage and support a society that is inclusive, with positive values and tolerance. A similar event will be held on the mainland part of the municipality at Rancho Viejo on Saturday at 10am.

VIDEO  of the "Impossible Dream" getting ready to participate in the Amigos Regatta. He says they are going to the Lima dock to pick up some children, then they will go up to Mia and back, but won't be going around the island. (Islanders age 8-12 participate and this catamaran is also taking 5 locals who are in wheelchairs. Whitecaps have been increasing off the eastern side of the isle, which is probably why they aren't circumnavigating the island.)

IM Noticias
IM Noticias reports that "The Impossible Dream" will participate in the Amigos Regatta on Friday with five people from the island who are in wheelchairs. It says the "Impossible Dream" won the multihull category and is manned by a crew who are in wheelchairs or who have prostheses. The foundation's website is www.impossibledream.us and a press conference was given by Deborah Mellen, who is in a wheelchair and sailed from St Peterburg, which was translated by the boat's captain Willian Rey. They showed the catamaran to the press, and invited people with disabilities aboard. In response, the DIF had already selected five people to participate. The boat was built by a British company and has an elevator system to descend to the cabins below. The 60 foot long boat has a 3.7 foot draft and can hold more than a score of people (~20). The Amigos Regatta begins at 11am from the dock of the Isla Mujeres Yacht Club, and a majority of the boats who were in the Sol al Sol regatta are participating. The crew of the Impossible Dream are reported as: Deborah Mellen, Bradley Johnson, Brandon Imhoff, David McCmley, Ashley Sullivan, Kevin Rodríguez and Willian Rey, captain.

See translation above. This article also says the group of more than 30 dissatisfied taxi drivers requested the union Director's removal and that they alleged he has a neutral position on Uber, which they criticized.  They said he did not defend himself regarding direct questions such as the alleged delivery of four permits (placas) for his family in Playa del Carmen and regarding accusations of 'servility' to the state government.

In response to complaints, personnel with the municipal Ecology department inspected the construction of a palapa on Playa Centro, along Rueda Medina Avenue, in front of the lighthouse. There are concerns that this area of concession, which is almost 3000 square meters, is already nearly full of non-permanent constructions including a snack bar and massage spaces. It appears that this construction will involve a large palapa, which would presumably be for a restaurant.

Regatta "Captains Cup" was held
Se celebró la “Copa de Capitanes” [+] Ver masFull article at this link
May 2  The traditional Captains Cup at the Casa de Las Rocas this afternoon (Wednesday) in honor of the 29 captains of who participated in the 50th edition of the Sol al Sol Regatta, that was completed this (Wed.) morning with the arrival of the last boat. The event was hosted by Enrique Lima Zuno, president of the Isla Mujeres Yacht Club, and attended by officials from the three levels of government, and organizers of the tournament, commodores of the yacht clubs.
During the event, the judges posted the results of the competition on the Regatta website, and the captains learned the final results of their overall placements
It is noted that inside the Casa de las Rocas there are many photographs of important events in national, state, and municipal history, including pictures of the opening of the first luxury hotel in the state, Zizil Ha, with the outgoing president of that time in 1964, Adolfo Lopez Mateos. There are also photos showing the Al Sol Regatta which was held for the first time that year. There are great photos of  Cárdenas, Juárez and Fidel Castro.
Don Jose De Jesus Lima Gutierrez (RIP), of course, appears in the photos with his wife, Rebeca Zuno de Lima (RIP), of course. He lived there for the final years of his life, away from the noise, with the peaceful sounds of the waves. Visitors can pick up books about the Maya, about Mexican ethnicities, and about political and social issues, including books in English. Juan Jose Morales wrote about the life of Jose de Jesus Lima, and about the Regattas, as well as an abundance of other information.

Turtles begin mating and nesting in May. They can be observed mating offshore from Punta Sur during this month, and they nest along the eastern beaches. Tortugranja staff and volunteers gather the eggs and incubate them in the sand in a pen outside the facility. This is the dry season when farmers burn brush from their milpa-fields on the mainland, and salt was gathered at Salina Grande lake for hundreds of years, until the mid 1900's.
