Aguakan investing 22 million pesos in Isla Mujeres by the end of the year LINK
- Roberto Enrique Robles, General Director of Aguakán, said that with the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant last year, now the company is able to expand the coverage of the sewer system to one hundred percent before the end of the 2018.
Last week the company announced the investment of just over 22 million pesos, which is expected to expand the sewer system, and this work that includes the irregular colony "La Guadalupana." He said they would also be providing service to the oldest and most developed part of Punta Sur.
He said, "With this work we would complete one hundred percent of the coverage of the sewer system,which should be finished in October or November, according to the plans." He explained that with the expansion of the treatment plant, now there is capacity to provide service to all the new developments that are opening in Punta Sur and Sac-Bajo.
Band of pickpockets identified LINK
Arturo Báez Vega, manager of Ultramar, the ferry company that moves more than 85 percent of the total passengers to Isla Mujeres, confirmed that a few weeks ago, a group of about six people were detected who are dedicated to stealing from passengers. They were taking advantage of the long lines within the Maritime Terminals, specifically at Gran Puerto, where Security personnel have identified them.
He said, "They were arrested, however, after a short time they were released, but we have them well identified and when they arrive we have them under surveillance." He said that the number of security personnel has been doubled in Gran Puerto, as a result of the increased number of passengers, due to the Easter holiday season.
On Saturday, a suspect was arrested and accused of being a pickpocket. Mr Baez Vega said they started as a group of three people, but they grew in number, but he stressed that they have been identified. He said the last time they were in the terminal, the security personnel were very attentive to all their movements, and when they were detected, they decided to leave.
The manager said that the safety of tourists is first and foremost, and for this they have has collaborated with the Department of the Navy of Mexico - Armada, who have ongoing surveillance in place in the terminal.
Argentinian accidentally electrocuted on roof LINK
April 1 Shortly after 7:30am on Sunday morning, a musician from Argentina, lost his life instantaneously, after receiving a strong electric shock on the roof of a house adjoining the home where his friend rented. It is said that the musician lived with a friend who rented an apartment, and they had decided to go up to the roof to watch the sunrise and smoke.
However, when the Argentinian, Emilio N., 26, leaned to look toward the street, he received an electric shock to his head from the high voltage cables. Paramedics from the Red Cross and Civil Protection personnel arrived at the scene, but nothing could be done for the young musician.

April 1 For the second consecutive day, on Sunday the weather was very good and the recreational activity in the National Marine Park was in full swing, without any problems, according to the Harbor Master.
There were no restrictions for the boats, who were offering their services to tourists, including trips to Isla Contoy National Park, as well as diving and snorkeling tours.
The effects of the cold front number 40 left the air feeling fresh at dawn. It drizzled at midnight, and was only a threat of rain. On Sunday it was totally clear.
Argentinean dies from accidental electrocution

Por Esto reports that Emiliano Manzano, aka "Argentine", was electrocuted on the roof of the Lizama family's house, on Jesus Martinez Ross Avenue, by a high voltage line of the CFE, Federal Electricity Commission. It can be seen that the roof is newly built, and there are no obstacles to prevent someone from climbing there, and there are no insulators on the line, which many owners usually do when when the cables cross over their roofs.
The Attorney General of Quintana Roo took charge of the case to open a folder of investigation and initiate the corresponding processes. The young man apparently lived in the island in recent times, in the company of his brother, who was at the scene.The Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) of Cancun, arrived to the transfer of the body to carry out the legally required autopsy, to confirm the cause of death of the foreigner, as part of the procedure. The Argentine consulate was also immediately notified.
This is the first foreigner to die because of this problem of defective infrastructure, which is seen both downtown and in the colonias. There have been incidents with construction workers, both fatal and minor, in the past. The last case was a few weeks ago when a person loading construction materials grazed a low voltage cable in Salina Grande. He had injuries that did not endanger his life.

Full beaches

The beaches appeared to be full, with occupied loungers under the umbrellas. Many boats were visiting and anchored on the other side of the North Beach buoy line. Playa Centro was also busy before noon, and security by the three levels of government was in place. The tourist police are on the lookout for pickpockets or thieves seeking the belongings of others on the beaches, after they caught a pickpocket at the Maritime Terminal of Isla Mujeres at noon on Friday.
Many tourists were visiting the various points of interest around the island, renting the more than 800 golf carts, in addition to the dozens of taxis, and the scooters and bicycles. They were visiting Punta Sur, Garrafón, Mundaca, Tortugranja and Caribbean malecon walkway.. More than a dozen dive shops are also offering underwater recreational activities and took people in MUSA Manchones, Cruz de la Bahia/Cross in the Bay, and the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks. SOme areas in the National Marine Park were at capacity, especially at Manchones and MUSA, as well as el Farito and Sac Bajo.
Tourist drives golf cart into a vertical position

There have been few road accidents so far this holiday season, like a woman who lost control of a golf cart on Friday afternoon, and ran up a sign on the main street of Rueda Medina. Traffic officers agree that the orientation being given by the 24 agencies to the people renting carts, has brought good results with a low incidence of accidents. One of the officers said, "There are days when there are no accidents but Friday was unusual, with that woman who lost control and another cart had a sli, this Friday was exceptional with that woman who lost control and another unit that had a slight collision on the same road, two blocks from the previous one," said an officer.
On Friday, cart #6 of the Captain Azul agency ended almost almost vertical against a sign near the Maritime Terminal, when the woman driving lost control, in the middle of heavy traffic at 5pm. She was uninjured, and only minor damage to the vehicle.
Later another minor incident occurred on the same road, tow blocks north, involving a cart from the Caribe agency, when two golf carts hit each other. The parties involved reached an agreement.
There are 830 golf carts circulating on the island, and 400 more carts owned by individuals for private use, although the rental agencies say that many private carts are being rented.
There is concern that some agencies have eliminated the 30 kilometer per hour maximum speed for their golf carts, and now the vehicles are going up to 40 km/hr, and due to their design, they can become unstable. It has been requested that agencies should not be allowed to do this.
See photo from Saturday. On FB, security video shows the cart was parked in front of a rental agency, with a woman in the passenger seat. Apparently she was asked to move the cart, but she tried to drive it from the passenger side. She probably planned to pull it around the two carts in front of her and re-park it in front of the bank. She waited for traffic to clear, pulled out and quickly lost control and hit the sign. Reports are that no alcohol was involved and that no one was injured.
New Ultramar car ferry still isn't in service

The "Ultracarga III" car ferry, which arrived in early January, remains moored at the concrete pier. It is noted that the company Maritima Isla Mujeres has offered car ferry service to Punta Sam for three decades, and recently formed an economic alliance with Marinsa, who acquired 51% of their shares.

March 31 The port was open for navigation by all vessels, and this is expected to continue on Sunday. The southern winds are expected to 'stop' cold front #40, whose winds are not expected to be very intense. The fishermen were able to go out and work and those offering nautical tours and services were also able to work.

Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.
