Planning twice monthly clean ups at Salina Grande lake: The City of Isla Mujeres is concerned about taking care of the environment.
About a half a ton of garbage was removed from the area surrounding Salina Grande in this clean up that was carried out by personnel and volunteers from the Department of Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT) and the municipal Department of Environment and Ecology, actions that will be continued to keep this body of water clean.
Vladimir Vallejo Molina, director of ZOFEMAT, said that in response to requests from residents living in the area of the lake, on Wednesday about 20 people were given the task of removing containers, glass, plastics, and remains of household items that were found along its path.
Mr. Vallejo Molina said that maintaining the ecological balance in the island is of vital importance due to the ecological fragility of this habitat that provides wetlands with a diverse variety of species of birds and fish. Therefore, the City has decided that in addition to the clean up campaigns that are carried out thoughout the year, during each month there will be two clean ups at Salina Grande lake to remove all types of trash along its shores.
He asked residents to do their part by  not throwing garbage in the street, because when the wind directions change, it is blown into the lake. He said, "The care of the Salina Grande involves us all, the government and the residents, because only in that way we can take better care of our natural environment."  LINK

The government of Isla Mujeres is working to maintain safe roads
The City redoubled efforts for the benefit of island citizens and visitors
With the commitment to provide a better image of the community, as well as maintaining safe streets and avenues for pedestrians and vehicles, the City of Isla Mujeres has increased its work cleaning and maintaining the streets, avenues and public areas of the municipality.
José Guadalupe Ríos Chalé, general director of Public Services, said that one of the most important commitments for the current government is that all the inhabitants, both of the island and of the Continental Zone, have better living conditions, therefore, having a clean, healthy and safe environment is of vital importance.
Mr. Rios Chale said, "We are constantly working so that all the islanders and, of course, those who visit us, can walk comfortably and safely through clean, well-lit streets. We want both the island and the Continental Zone to have quality public services, so we will continue working on this."
He explained that since the beginning of 2018 the municipal Department of Public Services hired more staff for the Sweeping Department, which now has a total of 34 street sweepers, who are in charge of road cleaning.
In the Continental Zone, cleaning and maintenance work was carried out around the buildings in Punta Sam, and approximately 10 tons of garbage and junk was removed from sidewalks and ditches along 8 kilometers of the Cancun-Isla Mujeres highway.
In January, the City of Isla Mujeres provided maintenance to streetlights and replaced them in neighborhoods of the Continental Zone including:  Gastón Alegre Avenue (Rancho Viejo Avenue), as well as in the "Paraíso", "Tamayo", "Guadalupana" and "El Triunfo" neighborhoods. This work included replacement of 89 lights in various locations, directly benefiting more than 300 families.
On the island, approximately 231 lights have been repaired, and the work continues. Mr. Ríos Chalé said in these first few weeks of the year, only the first phase of the plans has been accomplished.
During 2017 the brigades of workers pruning, cleaning and removing weeds in the parks and green areas were active in an ongoing manner, as were the crews working at the repair and installation of street lighting, and the patching and painting of sidewalks and pedestrian crossings.
The official concluded, "We are starting 2018 on the right foot and we will continue working at a good pace to guarantee that all the families of Isla Mujeres have roads and public spaces of quality, that areclean and in good condition, where they feel safe."  LINK   VIDEO

New Car Ferry schedule Tuesday-Friday...(offering an alternative to overnight stays on the mainland for early morning flights....there's a departure from the isle at 3:45am.) The article says the schedule for the other days is unchanged.  LINK

There's a VIDEO of a musician and passengers (and a security guard) dancing on the Marinsa ferry and the poster wrote: ."This weekend, I took the Marinsa ferry because the Ultramar was full. Although I had to wait half an hour more, having already waited half an hour, I have to admit that the trip was very very pleasant. Tho, perhaps the ships are not of the caliber of Ultramar, the Staff makes all the difference! From the entertainer, to the security guard, hehehehe super!"
There are comments about the polite, smiling, friendly personnel of Marinsa, and hopes that they will add more crossings. They've recently announced that they plan to bring in catamarans, and in recent news, they bought 51% of Maritima, the car ferry company.

Accidents continue among the lobster divers
Imparables los accidentes en pescadores-buzos.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
With three weeks remaining for the eight month lobster catching season, there have been 67 cases of decompression illness treated in the hyperbaric chamber. While most cases are mild, and the treatments generally yield good results, there was one death at the end of last year, when a fisherman from the neighboring municipality of Lazaro Cardenas arrived at the chamber in grave condition.
Although not all of the patients are from Isla Mujeres, more than 90% are from one of the local cooperatives. Of the last three patients, two are from the Caribe cooperative and on is from the Isla Blanca cooperative. The muscular damage to these divers was slight, they had been diving a day earlier and the pains didn't stop. They received treatment in the hyperbaric chamber with good results, and all three left free of pain in their lower and upper limbs. They were advised to rest for a few days.
It is noted that many fishermen are going out to sea in unfavorable circumstances due to the climate and diving at depths of more than 30 meters. They do not fully respect the diving table recommended by responsible diving agencies worldwide.
