We are continuing to work together to keep the island clean and beautiful. We encourage the children and young people to participate in the care of the environment with conferences and discussions in all the schools of the municipality.

We are committed to maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of Isla Mujeres. Let's continue  taking care of our environment and conserving it.  LINK    VIDEO
• The Cityof Isla Mujeres reaffirms its commitment to protect the environment
In order to promote a culture of environmental protection, the City of Isla Mujeres carries out ongoing cleaning campaigns and environmental education programs among students and community island, in order to preserve our natural resources.
Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, said that his administration is committed to promoting recreational activities that help children, youth and adults join the protection of the environment of the destination.
He said, "Isla Mujeres is a very rich territory in terms of flora and fauna, because we not only have the sea, but also lagoons, mangroves and wetland areas, as well as jungle and coastal scrub in the Continental Zone, so we are home to many different species of mammals, reptiles. birds, and waterfowl that we must protect."
The municipal director of Environment and Ecology, Carlos Barranco García, explained that during the year 2017, in accordance with instructions from the mayor, ongoing clean up campaigns were conducted in the lagoons and coastal areas, as well as protection activities for sea turtles, and pet sterilization campaigns.
In addition, various environmental education actions were carried out with children and young people in the primary schools, the middle schools, and the high schools of the island and the Continental Zone, covering all the educational institutions of the municipality. This consisted of recycling workshops and the screening of environmental films through the program "Cinema in your neighborhood", in coordination with the company Aguakán.
Mr. Barranco said,  "Since the beginning of this administration headed by the Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, we have worked regularly in the protection of the environment, because our mayor knows the importance of protecting the flora and fauna that inhabit the municipality and is committed to educating to the island community to join these activities that are not only beneficial for to the ecology the island, but for all of us who live in it."
In addition, the municipality of Isla Mujeres held the Ninth Ecological Drawing Contest in primary schools, with the participation of 198 students from all over the municipality, and the top three winners participated in competition at a state level.
In 2017, the City held the Fifth Gastronomic Lion Fish Competition, in which chefs competed to show their skills and abilities by presenting their best dishes, action that promotes the consumption of this invasive species, protecting the native species of the Caribbean Sea .
It is noted that Isla Mujeres is one of the first municipalities to have an Animal Protection and Welfare Regulation, which was published on April 18, 2017.  That same year, the Municipal Ecology Commission and the Citizen Council for Animal Protection and Welfare were established.
The installation of these bodies, as well as the coordinated work of the City with the Federal Office of Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) and private organizations allowed the rescue of two dolphins and the release of one of them in a healthy state.
The City of Isla Mujeres works hard and constantly to improve the culture of protecting the environment and ensure that children, youth and adults are involved in activities that help care for the flora and fauna that inhabit the municipality.

With ongoing clean up campaigns, we ensure the conservation of our flora and fauna.  Let's continue maintaining the beautiful image of our municipality.
During 2017 we actively maintained ongoing clean up campaigns in the whole municipality.

In  Isla Mujeres we protect the flora and fauna of our beautiful island.
With animal welfare regulations, we seek a decent life for animals.
We are one of the first municipalities to establish animal welfare laws.

Former governor Borge was extradited from Panama and at his initial hearing at the Neza-Bordo prison, the Public Prosecutor accused him of money laundering, causing 900,099,418 pesos in losses to the state treasury, with the acquisition and sale of 22 properties, some of which belong to the state territorial reserve.
He is accused of concealing assets derived from illegal activities.  Once third parties owned the properties, they used front companies to transfer the properties and hide them, with the knowledge that they were derived from illegal activities.
The properties that were investigated by the Public Ministry are located in Cozumel, Chetumal, Tulum, Bacalar, Playa del Carmen, Cancun and Isla Mujeres. According to the investigation, these crimes took place between April 2011 and September 2018 in the state of Quintana Roo,  "concealing the proceeds of illicit activities and were carried out in conjunction with other people and based on a common plan."
During the hearing, the former governor spoke continuously with his two lawyers, who indicated that he suffers from a kidney problem and requires treatment, as well as rest, which will require some breaks in his appearance before the Federal court.  LINK
(Note: The state constitution defines territorial reserves as land that the state can use for projects such as housing developments, and are not intended to be sold.  Newspapers report that more officials from his administration are expected to be implicated for mismanagement of public funds and assets. El Universal reports that the total area of the 22 properties is 8,561,959 square meters, (3.3 square miles) which is twice the area of the island of Isla Mujeres and ten times the size of Xcaret.)

Noti Isla Mujeres & Noti Caribe report that ten tourists visiting Cozumel were rescued by the Navy after the boat they were on suddenly began to sink. One of the passengers, who is from Florida, said the crew told them to go to the bow, but the ship continued to capsize, so they preferred to dive into the water, relying on their experience as divers. The incident occurred just 15 minutes after they has sailed from Cozumel, near the Curva Tormentos. He said, "Everyone is fine. It happened very fast and help arrived quickly, since there were other boats nearby." He said the Navy arrived quickly and lent assistance, and they were back on land very soon. Saturday, Jan. 6 Día de Reyes/ King's Day   This day commemorates when the three kings or Magi visited Jesus & is the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. Traditionally this is the day when Mexican children receive gifts (which are brought by the three kings as opposed to Santa). It is customary to eat Rosca de reyes, a sweet bread that represents King Herod's crown with figurines of baby Jesus hidden inside. Whoever finds the token in their piece is obligated to host a party on Candlemas Day (Dia de la Candelaria), Feb. 2, which usually includes tamales.

Festival for King's Day (Jan. 6) at the el Pescador baseball field in front of Chedruai on Saturday starting at 5p. More than 6000 people are expected to attend to enjoy the entertainment, surprises, and presents.
There's also a toy giveaway at Ruben's restaurant on Guerrero, but as of 8am on Jan. 5, they're unsure what time....probably ~11am.

Jan. 6 is Día de la Enfermera. This special day was established in 1931, when Dr. Jose Villagrana said nurses were like a "regalo de reyes"...a gift from the Magi.  (International Nurse's Day is celebrated on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale).
