Religious icon honored with boat procession
Navega por el mar divino icono [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The festivities honoring the patron saint of Isla Mujeres, Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, concluded with a boat procession, and then the icon was returned to its niche, until the end of November 2108, when it will once again tour the streets and colonias. Participants in the celebrations included more than 20 groups, including guilds of fishermen, children, youth, policemen, women, founding families, vaqueros (cowboys), businessmen, and special guests, who gave thanks to the Virgin for God's protection and care during this year.
There were two weeks of prayers, reflections, and personal commitments, with vows made in hopes of more blessings in the upcoming year until the next feast, preserving this religious tradition. Priest Raul Sanchez Alonso thanked everyone who contributed and participated, and spoke about how these activities help foster faith and nourish spiritual lives.
Rodolfo Inigo Medrano gave thanks as he commemorated the 29th anniversary of his first taco restaurant, which now has a branch in Cancun.  He said, "With my father, we opened our taco business "Rigo" on Isla Mujeres on Dec. 7, 1988, with the guild of the cooperative Patria y Progreso. He spoke about his faith and increasing his business amid difficulties, because the passage of the powerful hurricane Gilberto had damaged much of the tourism infrastructure of the region.
He said "My father and I saw a need to grow on the island and he opened his heart to me at an event of the guild of the Patria y Progreso cooperative. I was given a contract by Ariel "Picho' Magana (RIP) (First Mayor of Isla Mujeres) on Dec. 7, 1988, and 29 year later I return for work and grace of the Divine Providence to the place where I started my little business."
He gave thanks for all this growth of the business and his spiritual life to the Virgin of Immaculate Conception, since he has opened a branch of Tacos Rigo in colonia la Gloria a few months ago and it is doing very well. They have been in the taco business, from Mexico City. The motto of their restaurant is "The joy of serving"...to their customers.

Vehicle ferry service suspended to Punta Sam
Cancelan servicio del ferry. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Strong winds from Cold Front #14 caused the suspension of car ferry service to Punta Sam on Sunday, except one round trip was made with the boat coming to the island at 9:30a and returning to Punta Sam at 11am. The maneuver at the dock was difficult due to the strong winds, so the decision was made to suspend service. On Sunday, service should be restored with three departures scheduled from both terminals, and extra crossings could be added if the demand requires it, according to one of the company managers.
Ferry services continued on the route to Puerto Juarez and the Hotel Zone, but there were not many passengers since the weather prevented visitors from fully enjoying the natural beauty of the island.
The port was closed for navigation by small boats on Friday evening by the Harbor Master, with a forecast for strong winds, and they arrived at dawn, with rain, and the temperatures had already dropped. This weather is expected to continue on Sunday. Although the skies remained cloudy on Saturday, some visitors arrived at the Maritime Terminal and groups headed to enjoy Playa Centro, which had more activity than North Beach. Merchants reported that sales were not good, and they hope business will improve on Sunday.

Celebrating New Year's in Isla Mujeres
To celebrate New Year's Eve, some families set up tables in the side streets with pinatas strung overhead, and dine on turkey stuffed with seasoned ground meat, while others crowd the Town Square for live music, dancing, and fireworks. Each neighborhood brings in the New Year with a bang, and the skies explode with color in all directions.
During the NYE countdown, there is a tradition of eating twelve uvas de buenas suerte (grapes of good luck), each representing a month, with a toast of champagne or cider. The party on the town square continues all night long. At the other end of the isle, people gather at Punta Sur to greet the first rays of the sun at the eastern-most point in Mexico.
Other customs include cleaning your house on New Year's Eve & sweeping out bad luck. Wearing red underwear could bring you love in the New Year, or  your white undies may bring you peace, while yellow represents wealth. Those who hope to travel should grab an empty suitcase and carry it around the room or the block, and set it by the door. If you drop a shoe on New Year's morn and it lands "boca arriba" (face up)  you will enjoy good luck in the upcoming year.

The old year is represented by a life sized character called El Viejo, The Old Man, who is later filled with fireworks and set ablaze. He may resemble a politician, and he is usually holding cigars & tequila. Fireworks are everywhere, and their names are metralletas (literally "machine guns" – but it means fire crackers), cañones (larger fire crackers), voladores (rockets in many different sizes), chifladores (whistlers), and barre pies ("foot sweepers", that spin on the ground & shoot sparks).
Kids receive toys on Dia de los Reyes, January 6, when families, friends, and coworkers share rosca de reyes. King's cake, usually with hot chocolate. If you get the Baby Jesus,it means you'll be hosting a party & providing the tamales on Candlemas Day, Feb. 2.
