From the Municipal Facebook site.....  (  FB page link)

The safety of families 👪 and of our visitors 👫 is a priority for us.
We maintain the coordinated work with the state government to continue providing the necessary tools for our police officers.

The state government delivered three new patrol vehicles to the municipality of Isla Mujeres. During this first year of this administration, in addition to these three vehicles, the municipality has received 10 new patrol vehicles (two trucks and eight compact cars), as well as portable and fixed radios, bulletproof vests, and other supplies, as well as two electric bicycles.
As part of the safety programs, the implementation of a breathalyzer program has also been carried out, reducing accidents caused by driving under the influence of intoxicating drinks by up to 70%.

Today we commemorate the 64th anniversary of women's suffrage in Mexico. We recognize the trajectory and work of the island women 👩👧👸 who have occupied public positions.https://goo.gl/UebXUH
Events were held in honor of the 64th anniversary of the women of Mexico obtaining the right to vote, which included a breakfast for women of the island who have held office, and awards were given to women who have excelled in political office and their political careers. Speeches were given about the importance of women having the right to vote, to have rights, and to participate in the democratic process of the country.
The Mayor's wife, Paola Orrico de Carrillo, honorary president of the DIF social service agency, represented him and spoke about his commitment to equality for women and ensuring that conditions allow girls to realize their dreams, which includes providing quality education and equality, teaching them about their own value, and teaching males that a better society is built upon equality and respect. The head of the isla Mujeres Women's Institute (IMM) also spoke, and honorees are listed.
There was a photographic exhibition called "Collage de Fotos" in the Town Hall with faces of island women from all sides, recognizing their careers, in honor of this important date.

Fishermen also want good management of trash, because not being conscientious also affects the sea VIDEO

Martha Patricia Puc Laines, with the Human Rights Commission on Isla Mujeres, said 27 complaints have been filed so far in 2017, with the majority of them being against the Departments of Public Security and Traffic. LINK

The firefighters of the Civil Protection department were called to a fire in colonia Salina Chica!

Second false fire alarm! This one was at an address by Punta Sur, where it was reportedly rubbish burning which generated the mobilization of the firefighters.

Fishermen are hoping for improvement in their lobster catches during the rest of the season, and are currently having reduced catches due to tons of seagrass associated with changes in the currents. LINK

Alert about the presence of jellyfish on the beaches of Isla Mujeres
The arrival of jellyfish has been reported since last Thursday on the west coast of Isla Mujeres, a phenomenon that has alerted the sea men, who have been able to observe that they are of a prominent size. LINK
Ulises Berman Graniel, Director of Civil Protection announced that due to this unusual  presence, precautionary measures are being taken because these jellyfish can cause harm to people. He said, "We have already issued instructions to the lifeguards on Playa Norte and Playa Centro so that when jellyfish are present, tourists will be asked to come out of the water."
He said if the numbers arriving become great, they are ready to close the beaches, and they are staying attentive and governmental agencies are monitoring the situation, including the department of Ecology and the Environment, Civil Protection, and the Harbor Master.
Mr. Berman Graniel reported that a person who was stung by one of the jellyfish was treated at the hospital, and for this reason he asks swimmers that if they see jellyfish in the area, they should not go swimming.
He explained  that the first symptom of a jellyfish sting is an outbreak of large hives and in case the person is allergic to the type of poison, they can convulse or have a major effect, so he emphasized the importance of being cautious and avoiding them.

Staying vigilant at the beaches with the unusual arrival of jellyfish LINK
This article has the same information noting that the unusual arrival of the jellyfish is occurring on the western beaches, and may be associated with a cold front n the Yucatan, which causes changes in water temperatures, attracting the jellyfish to the coastal zones, which is unusual. It is noted that they have a gelatinous and transparent appearance, so they can go undetected. It says these animals of the Cnidarios family are harmless, they can cause irritation with a toxic substance if they are touched, voluntarily or accidentally. The lifeguards are remaining vigilant to prevent swimmers from entering areas where the jellyfish have been seen. Yellow flags are also being installed to restrict the presence of swimmers in areas with high concentration. It is expected that they will continue with their natural movement through the sea currents until they leave the island, and meanwhile municipal authorities will remain vigilant.

Kai Creamer explains (on FB...she's not associated with TVIM: There is a large influx of several jelly species due to recent current changes. The majority are Moon Jellyfish (Aurelia sp.). They do sting, but only have stingers on a very limited portion of their bodies, and it would be classed as a mild irritation really (less painful than stinging nettles and not as long lived). The larger jelly in the pictures is a Pink Meanie but it is D. larsoni, not the "Big Pink" or "Giant Pink" D. dalmatinum of the Mediterranean. People have varying reactions to Drymonema sp. stings, from mild to excruciating, so best to steer clear just incase (but they are not fatal). And their favorite food is Moon Jellyfish! There are hundreds of Moons and dozens of Pinks as well as hundreds (if not thousands) of Comb Jellys (Mnemiopsis leidyi) in the bay right now which have drifted down from the gulf on the recent North winds and currents. For all jellys, if stung: 1. Wash the area with saltwater as much as possible (sweet water will aggravate most stings!). 2. Remove tentacles and stinging organs from skin (scraping with the edge of a credit card works well, shaving the area with a razor works best). 3. If possible apply white vinegar to affected area (some species have venom which becomes inactive in heat, for these the most effective treatment is to immerse affected area in water "as hot as you can stand it"). 4. Control pain.

Sea grass continues to arrive
Sargazo continúa recalando [+] Ver masFull article at this link
As sargasso continues to arrive. it is attended to by the group of women who clean the beaches at an early hour, to provide a better image,  before the arrival of tourists. The seaweed is buried in holes that they dig themselves, so the vegetation doesn't have to be taken elsewhere. They do this regularly, when the first rays of the sun are touching in Playa Centro.
These women who work with the Federal Maritime Zone (Zofemat) at  Playa Norte, tend to a kilometer of beach, keeping these public recreational areas in good condition.  This is part of within the plan which includes regular monitoring of these area, in order to maintain the White Flag and Blue Flag designations which mean these beaches meet national and international quality standards.
During the spring, summer and autumn seasons,  tens of tons of sargasso arrives to the beaches, although in reality, this is much less compared to other destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, because of our geographic position, a great deal of it passes us by, according to those responsible for monitoring this phenomenon, including fishermen.
Thus, these women, with shovels, rakes, and other necessary equipment, are ready daily to remove this vegetation from the areas where it arrives on certain sea currents, since Playa Norte is  not as affected, compared to the other neighboring area.
The employees of the businesses with concessions in these areas also support these efforts, and it is intended that they should increase their participation, since they take advantage of this vital resource for tourism,  the white sands and the calm waters of the Caribbean Sea.

See DQR translation above. This article notes that new companies plan to use 'monocascos'..single hull boats that depart every 30 minutes, starting at 5am, with a capacity of about 200-220 passengers each. It is not known if the tickets will be less expensive than Ultramar, but it is presumed this will generate employment and promote investment. It is estimated that Marnsa's investment is about 300 million pesos and that its rival is investing a similar amount. It is noted that in September, Ultramar announced it will begin offering cargo & passenger service in the fall from Punta Sam, with a boat that is already equipped in Greece.

Tuesday, Nov. 1 All Saint's Day   Dia de los Muertos

Wednesday, Nov. 2  All Soul's Day   Dia de los Muertos

At this time of year, Mexican families remember & celebrate their departed relatives. Hanal Pixan is the name of the Mayan celebration. Altars are made with photos of the deceased, where offerings of favorite foods and items are placed, copal incense is burned, and marigold flower petals are often used. The schools usually have altar contests & displays, there's usually one in the Town Hall, and last year there was a display of altars representing different of Mexico at the Casa de la Cultura.
All Saints Day & All Souls Day, Nov. 1 & 2, are the Dias de los Muertos...one for children, one for adults, when families visit graves & clean & decorate them. On the island, these are private moments in the cemeteries, not public celebrations like in many parts of Mexico.

There is usually a silent procession with residents dressed in white, black, and traditional clothing, and many wear Catrina makeup. In addition to keeping these traditions alive, Halloween is celebrated enthusiastically on Hidalgo. Bring lots of little items & be prepared to be mobbed by cute kids and to enjoy the various impressive, clever homemade costumes.
