(Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, October 13, 2017) .- Committed to keeping Isla Mujeres as a quality destination for each of the visitors, the government headed by Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, works in coordination with the staff of the Federal Terrestrial Maritime Zone (ZOFEMAT), headed by Vladimir Vallejo Molina, at cleaning the beaches of the municipality.
Juan Carrillo Soberanis explained that the island is known for its white sand beaches and turquoise blue waters, which stand out for their cleanliness and the quality of their services, achieving the "White Flag" and "Blue Flag" awards, recognitions that are given to destinations that meet certain quality standards.
The Mayor said, "We are a Pueblo Magico with important awards such as the blue and white flags, and it is our responsibility as a government and as citizens is to maintain the cleanliness of our beaches and the quality of our services, which helps us continue to position ourselves as a world class destination. which benefits the local economy."
The Mayor recognizes the work of ZOFEMAT workers, who carry out cleaning on all beaches of the municipality early in the morning, so that they are in the best condition when families and visitors arrive, for which the current government works to provide the necessary tools to carry out these actions.
With these works the Mayor seeks to maintain the position of Isla Mujeres, as a high-level destination, which provides visitors and islanders quality spaces, cleanliness and services of an excellent quality, thus improving the local economy.

As a result of the last rains, the streets have begun to suffer the first potholes of the season, mainly on the prolongation "Rueda Medina". LINK
Cabbies of Isla Mujeres are the most affected and are asking that the Department of Public Services give the problem their attention. They said, "There are not many potholes yet, but when the rains continue, the problem will become more serious. They said the problem was not that obvious the past two months, but since the recent rains, potholes have begun to appear. Some are in front of the Naval Hospital and others are in front of Marma (near Green Verde who sell construction materials)..
Potholes can be unsafe for motorcycle riders and they also are requesting prompt attention to the problem, since they are most at risk of suffering an accident.
After a change of dates for the official opening, it has been confirmed that the state Major Basketball League season will begin on Sat. Oct. 14, an event that will take place here on the island with the participation of the Cahuameros of Isla Mujeres Nueva Generación who will play the Tucanes of Playa del Carmen . LINK VIDEO
The games will take place at the Convention Center, on Saturday night at 8pm and on Sunday at noon. There will be an inauguration ceremony Saturday night at 7pm.

Gerardo Magaña Barragán, president of the Municipal Council of Pueblos Magicos of Isla Mujeres and Vice President of the Association of Small Hotels Fascinating of Isla Mujeres said that the downturn is critical and that from his point of view the occupancy is less than 10 percent. A lifeless body was found below the cliffs on the Caribbean coast near the FOVISSSTE apartments, which appears to be a male of about 43-45 years of age. Officers with the municipal police and paramedics with the Red Cross are at the scene, but removal of the body is complicated by the difficult access. The most recent was Carlos Abraham Medina Alcocer, of the Caribe cooperative, who was injured yesterday in his lower and upper limbs, after diving twice to a depth of 140 feet each, for an approximate time of 40 minutes each. He was discharged this morning, according to Rosenberg Dzul Ochoa, an assistant of the unit. He was treated according the table under level five immersion, modified, with a first session of three hours at 6pm yesterday, and this morning was his second and last session, and then he was discharged.
He was diagnosed with a type 1 and 2 decompression, severe, and he had symptoms of severe pain and burning in his knees, arms, legs, as well as vomiting and dizziness.
He was still feeling slightly dizzy after the last session, but he must wait at home for a break and rest while his body recovers fully, according to the recommendations that were given to him.
He dove with compressed air supplied by a hose, as fishermen commonly do to catch lobster, which lacks a safety system. The injury suffered by the fisherman was during his last exit from the water, when he apparently didn't respect the scientific table and follow its rules.
The lobster catching season began July 1st and will last eight months. Twenty-two fishermen have suffered decompression and been treated this season, and this is the third diver with a serious case, while the other had milder cases, according to Mr. Dzul Ochoa.

Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

At this time of year, Mexican families remember & celebrate their departed relatives. Hanal Pixan is the name of the Mayan celebration. Altars are made with photos of the deceased, where offerings of favorite foods and items are placed, copal incense is burned, and marigold flower petals are often used. The schools usually have altar contests & displays, there's usually one in the Town Hall, and last year there was a display of altars representing different of Mexico at the Casa de la Cultura.
All Saints Day & All Souls Day, Nov. 1 & 2, are the Dias de los Muertos...one for children, one for adults, when families visit graves & clean & decorate them. On the island, these are private moments in the cemeteries, not public celebrations like in many parts of Mexico.
There is usually a silent procession with residents dressed in white, black, and traditional clothing, and many wear Catrina makeup. In addition to keeping these traditions alive, Halloween is celebrated enthusiastically on Hidalgo. Bring lots of little items & be prepared to be mobbed by cute kids and to enjoy the various impressive, clever homemade costumes.
