The blue crabs arrive every year between September and October to the beautiful beaches of Isla Mujeres. Let's watch out for them during their long journey, full of obstacles, from the mangroves to the beaches. The graphic says:
CAMPAIGN FOR THE PROTECTION OF CRABS
This is what you should do if you happen to encounter them:
Female. Her abdomen is wider and more circular, almost completely covering the ventral part of her body. If you see a female, take her to the sea shore
Male. His abdomen is narrow and has a triangular shape that is similar in to an inverted letter "T". If you see a male, return him to the mangroves.
Recommendations: Don't shine lights directly on them, Cross only at pedestrian crossings, Don't use tongs to handle them, Don't go into the mangroves, Don't take photos using a flash.
Equipment: Use these items to properly assist the crabs and to prevent mistreatment of them.

This article says that they have protected 1003 nests so far, and that they are hoping to break the record of 1500 nests in 2015. The director of the Tortugranja, Deline Carcia Canto said efforts have been increased to prevent poaching and predation of this species which visits Isla Mujeres every year, and these efforts are vital to guaranteeing its conservation.
She said that it is necessary to continue with these actions aimed at protecting the sea turtles: "Especially in the area of awareness, We want all islanders and those who visit us to become involved in their conservation and to denounce (officially complain) about any poaching or selling of either turtle meat and eggs. "

The 5th Gastronomic Contest based on Lion Fish LINK
Sixteen contestants participated in this competition which encourages consumption of Lion Fish, who are an invasive species in Caribbean waters, that prey on other species and reproduce rapidly. The judging was based on taste, technique of elaboration, presentation and creativity.

The Isla Mujeres delegation is ready to promote the cultural, historic and natural attractions of this destination at the 2017 National Fair of Pueblos Magicos, to be held in Monterrey Sept 20-24.

Junk removal campaigns LINK
The General Director of Municipal Public Services, José Ríos Chalé, said that junk pick up campaigns have been carried out in all of Isla Mujeres, both on the island and the mainland. On the island they have conducted this campaign in the colonias of "Miraflores", "Lol Beh", "Cañotal", "La Gloria", "Salina Chica", "Salina Grande", "Electricians" and "La Guadalupana". Between the island and the mainland, 756 tons of junk were removed including televisions, refrigerators , air conditioners, furniture, and more.

Isla Mujeres is an increasingly popular and safe tourist destination so the US travel alert shouldn't directly affect Isla Mujeres, this was announced by Gustavo Rodríguez Orozco, Director of Tourism Promotion of Isla Mujeres.

So far 1003 nests have been protected, compated to 508 last year. Work by the Tortugranja is coordinated with the Department of the Nave (Semar), the Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa) and the Federal Police in monitoring the different nesting sites There are hopes that the record of 1500 nests in 2015 will be exceeded. Residents are encouraged to report any poaching or sale of turtle meat or eggs

Yesterday, an awareness campaign was instituted for the immediate implementation of the Regulations for Animal Welfare and Protection in Isla Mujeres, said Sebastián Escobedo, Alderman for Ecology. He was presenting the corresponding Manual of Administrative and Operative Procedures for the Regulations. José González, deputy director of Ecology, made the announcement yesterday afternoon in the City Council room, and explained that during the upcoming week a direct review will be carried out in the colonias to give direct notice to those who have their animals on the roof or in the streets. Then, in the following week, a sanction will be applied. That is, before the end of the first half of September, this regulation will be in force to address the social concerns and to solve the problem of animals in the streets.
The Manual of Administrative and Operative Procedures for Animal Welfare in the municipality of Isla Mujeres was reviewed by the municipal legal department in order to give certainty to the work that will be initiated by municipal Ecology department, with the support of the City Council.
The minimum penalty in the regulation appears to be 41 minimum salaries and the maximum penalty is 300 minimum salaries; conditions and intentions will be determined. (The Daily Minimum salary is 80 pesos or about five dollars, so 40 dms equals about $200usd and 300 dms equals about $1500usd). No one should have their pets on the street or on the roof without protection and care. Mr. Escobedo requested citizen support to successfully implement the plan, which began on February 22 when the City Council endorsed the draft of this regulation, which was later published in the Official State Government publication and became Law.
It is a question of improving public health and the public image with the measure, therefore, the government is interested in addressing this problem with community participation. It has been five years since this was proposed by a civil association with José González. These concerns have been expressed by the community, and published in the media, for several decades, including the need for official participation. Community work and appeals for governmental involvement have been made by veterinarian Delfino Guevara for 18 years, who currently heads the first well equipped veterinary hospital, which was inaugurated three years ago. to care for the health of pets in Isla Mujeres, without their owners having to go elsewhere.
Cleaning out the Trash Transfer Facility

The municipal government is working to remove the garbage that has accumulated for five years at the Trash Transfer Station, to transfer it to the regional landfill on the mainland.
Several vehicles were hired to carry out this effort in six days, to transport ~900 tons of accumulated trash, just before delivery of the Mayor's first Governmental Report.
The Mayor made commitments to clear out the facility but this didn't occur because the municipal coffers were de-capitalized and he also has not received the payment of 200,000 pesos per month by the government of the municipality of Benito Juarez (Cancun), for use of the regional landfill, which is a contractual agreement that has accumulated to a current debt of 17 million pesos.
Workers confirmed that they have been working until midnight daily to prepare the trucks to cross on the first ferry trip to Punta Sam. They have been doing this for six days, and the goal is to achieve total cleaning of the station, which they expect to take another six days.
Several weeks ago, José Ríos Chalé, head of the Public Service, reported there was about 1,800 tons of garbage in the facility and they had not been able to make progress because of various problems with the trucks, due to the lack of renovating the fleet.
This work has been carried out with the muncipal "gondola" truck (semi with an open bed) and with the support of about half a dozen "gondolas" from the local union of volqueteros (truck drivers), which will allow the City to achieve this goal, at a rate of six vehicles full of trash daily.

A little more than a week after the end of the summer holiday period, the influx of visitors has dropped significantly. Hotel occupancy overall is at 62.46%, and on the isle it is 41.62%, but some small hotels have reported they only have one or two occupied rooms, which is less that 10 percent. Occupancy on the mainland in the large luxury hotels in the Punta Sam area is at 77.56%. The ferries bringing passengers from the Hotel Zone, Puerto Juarez and Punta Sam say they are operating at about 50 to 60 percent of their capacity, and they expect it to decrease in September, which occurs annually.
The small hoteliers who are at less than 10 percent occupancy are requesting that a campaign be conducted to promote the destination during the months of September, October, and November, with some of the funds which are collected from the 3% Hospitality Tax.

This is another article about the concerns of residents about the seawall of the eastern malecon downtown. The 'cages' of rocks (gabions..in Spanish gaviones) below the wall have been deteriorating, which were constructed after Hurricane Wilma. It is noted that during that hurricane, a section of 200 meters broke down, bringing water to the area just south of the Aguakan facility.

Residents thought Civil Protection would just prune the almond tree which was planted 40 years ago to provide shade for the parents waiting to deliver lunch to their children at the school, but it was cut down. This tree also provided shade for a neighbor's home, and a member of that family just cam out of a coma to learn of this bad news, after she has survived two heart attacks. Her granddaughter complained that this was a terrible 'gift' for Grandparents Day, on Monday. This tree survived Hurricane Gilbert and Hurricane Wilma, and has provided a home for many birds, in addition to offering respite from the sun.

Lion Fish cooking competition

Professional and amateur chefs will participate in the fifth edition of the Lionfish Gastronomic Competition, which will take place on Thursday, August 31st at 7pm on the Town Square, to feature these dishes and promote consumption among the general population. Many people are unaware that Lion Fish is edible, and now more people are including it in their diet, because this is the fifth year of this culinary contest, which has helped familiarize more people with this fish. Consumption helps control this predator which has invaded our waters.
Another goal of the competition is to increase the sale and consumption of lion fish in restaurants, to help offset their proliferation. It is not native to this area and has become one of the main predators of other species. It has no natural predators and reproduces at a 'dizzying' pace, and is a poisonous species when it is alive, due to its spines. It is becoming a regular part of people's diets in some other states of Mexico and various Caribbean countries. Measures are being taken to control the proliferation of this species, but it would be difficult to eradicate them because of the speed at which they reproduce.

Fishermen from the island asked the Mexican Navy to implement surveillance at the entrance to the Chacmuchuc lagoon (on the mainland part of the municipality of Isla Mujeres) in order to prevent poachers who settled permanently in fishing camps in the area of Boca Iglesias, to stop them from preying species that are under a ban and fromdevastates with all the seafood products that they find in their path, regardless of size. They say there fishermen are mostly from Tabasco and don't respect the closures and catch lobsters in the months they have eggs, which is not allowed, and they devastate the octopus "as tho it was the last day of fishing in their lives", and mostly lack permits for these activities, and may not even have permits for catching fish. Some lack legal registration for their boats, also, according to local fishermen.
The island fishermen complained that they are subject to Naval inspection to verify they have all their documents in order, but the poachers should be monitored, who also have the liberty of going out when the port is closed for small boats.
They said that the octopus season has already begun and the fishermen at Boca Iglesias are putting an end to the entire resource, leaving nothing for the rest, but also catching lobsters below the prescribed size and weight, which is, in the case of the tails, is 16.5 centimeters ( So they should be bigger than a dollar bill because that is six and a half inches and the bill is ~6.1 inches. Peso notes are 5.2 inches)and if it is live crustacean, the minimum is 400 grams.
Travel advisory causes concern

There are concerns about the repercussions of the "warning" issued by the US government, which included Cancun, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya, despite this destination not being mentioned in the warning, but because of this island's proximity to one of the destinations, that the advisory could have a serious effect on occupancy.
Juan Carrillo Figueroa, a leader of the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) on the isle, said that it is likely that the "warning" about different destinations in Mexico could be an "amague" of Donald Trump to accept the conditions of NAFTA.
He said that most of the tourists arriving at the international airport in Cancun are headed to other destinations and among all of them, there are only few that chose Isla Mujere to stay overnight. He said, "Planes carrying between 300 to 400 passengers arrive daily in Cancun, but most tourists stay in Cancún or go to the Riviera Maya, maybe among all of those, in high season around five percent of the plane's passengers come to visit us, who fortunately live in peace in this paradise, but you can see that the planes won't be flying in just to bring tourists planes to Isla Mujeres. " It was clear and realistic to point out that, although Isla Mujeres is not a destination mentioned in the "warning" by the United States, if cancellations begin occurring of flights to Cancun and the Riviera Maya, it is obvious that the situation will directly affect this destination.
He said, "It is likely to be an 'amague', the way this gentleman (Donald Trump) has to lobby in his negotiations on NAFTA." He said this could affect Isla Mujeres and the start of winter season.
