Mayor Juan Carrillo is taking care of an old demand of the islanders.
The Mayor is helping the families who live in the area known as "La Lavandería" to obtain deeds for their homes. It is noted that these properties have belonged to the National Tourism Fund (FONATUR) for more than 40 years, and this was where the facilities of a laundry where located, where washing was done to the whites (linens) of the cabins which existed in front of the Convention Center. But with the passage of the years, said laundry closed and the building began to be occupied as a living space. For many years, the occupants of this property have been fighting for the legalization of the premises, which was a long-standing demand made to various administrations.
The mayor said there was a meeting with the tenants and they were informed about the steps and procedures necessary to do to obtain legal possession of these properties. Since they lack legal deeds they couldn't make improvements and changes.
The City Council of Isla Mujeres authorized the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, to represent them before FONATUR to begin a process of donation of the property in question to the City of Isla Mujeres, who in turn will do the same for the occupants.
The mayor said that the authorization of the City Council is only the beginning of a process, and that the next step is to enter into agreements with FONATUR to proceed with the donation of the property, and that then a long process will begin for the adjudication of the lots to benefit of each of the owners, which should be finished before the end of this year.
Bringing Health services of Seguro Popular to the islanders
A Customer Service module for Seguro Popular was set up on Wednesday at the green dome in Salinas, to take care of residents from 8am until everyone left, and on Thursday they planned to go to the Continental Zone. Also, residents can go to the Community Hospital to register or update their insurance from Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm.

Complaint of another attempted theft of boat motors in Isla Mujeres
One of the whale shark tour boat captains noticed the attempted robbery of two of the boat engines, when it was occupying a space at the port enclosure of the whale shark malecon (I think this means it was moored by the whale shark monument). The would-be thieves would have arrived in the predawn/late night hours (la madrugada..English doesn't have a good word for that..the 'wee hours'.) when there was no surveillance, and loosened the screws of the "cola" of the two motors (lit "tail" I think this is a transmission-like part...they are easy to sell and hard to identify), but they had bad luck with the "vaciante del mar" (I think this means the tide when out. lit it's "emptying of the sea"). So they had to abort their plan. These types of thefts to these boats has been an ongoing problem, which is difficult to resolve. These parts are hard to identify and once they enter the black market, they can't be recovered.
Skateboarding youths set an example by conducting a clean up
This weekend the young islanders who practice longboard in Isla Mujeres conducted a clean up at colonia La Gloria on the Caribbean side of the island. The 40 skateboarders collected about 200 kilos of trash in the area known as Chapo Hills street.
"This initiative was directly conceived by the kids who use this area to practice their sport, which is longboard and skateboard, and they themselves commented on how dirty it was, so they started this project together," said Marissa Smith, founder of Barracuda Board Co.
She said they will continue doing clean-ups, and have a second project planned to create trash cans from recycled materials and install them on this street so that trash will be put where it belongs, with support from Daniel Ley of ISLA (Isla Longboard and Skate Association).
This environmental activity also motivated them to participate in a state competition since for their collaboration in favor of Isla Mujeres they will be offered the support of a discount on their registration to this competition. It is noted that the islander skateboarders play an important role in this sport.
Longboarding consists of going down hills at high speeds on a long skateboard and is practiced on this street, which is kept closed every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with support from the municipal government.

More than a dozen women have registered to participate in the 4th International Fishing Tournament "La Dorada del Caribe 2017" to be held this weekend, according the organizing committee. The majority are expected to register at the Captains Dinner on Friday at 8pm, and registration will also be available at 6am on Saturday. It is hoped that the number of competitors could reach 40 for Saturday's competition. Participants come from around the Yucatan Peninsula, the interior of Mexico and especially from the United States, where these types of skills is more common.
Leonel Povedano Castillo, general director of Economic Development,who is responsible for the tournament, said that the preparations are in place to welcome the competitors. He said, "We did special follow-up for the organizing of this important event, which is one of the few women's fishing tournaments across the country that has managed to become a benchmark for sport fishing."
This is the fourth edition of the tournament, which begins at 8am on Saturday. The weigh in will conclude at 3pm and the awards will be presented at 6pm. The prizes will consist of 70 thousand pesos in cash for the first place, 30 thousand for the second place and a motorcycle for the third place, as well as surprise prizes.

The small hotels in Isla Mujeres have more than 50 percent of rooms available this summer season, according to the managers of several properties.These one, two and three star properties offer rates starting at 500 pesos, which is a very good option for families to vacation during the remainder of the summer holiday season.
Francis Arlene Hotel, which is a two star hotel, had an occupancy of 25 percent this past weekend. Hotel Carmelina has 16 occupied rooms of its 24 rentals; Caracol has a 40 percent occupancy rate and Kinick is at 70 percent, according to interviews with their managers.
At a Pueblo Magico business meeting on Tuesday, Posada del Mar reported an occupancy rate of 60 percent over the weekend, and Bahia said they were much better.
More than 10,000 tourists arrive daily, and twice that many on the weekends, but few come to stay overnight, but rather they come for a few hours to enjoy the beaches, sea, and natural attractions, and then they return to the mainland. One of the hoteliers said, "Those who are making money are the ferry companies and the 24 golf cart rental agencies, but not the hotels." They said there is a need to rethink the promotional strategies to tackle this issue of low occupancy during this holiday period, which has been less than 30 percent, currently qualifying this as a "poor summer".

The Board of the Mexican Red Cross of Isla Mujeres announced that the Youth Committee will be reactivated for youths between 12 and 17 to train them in a term of six months. There will be an informational meeting about the Youth program at the Red Cross facility on August 6, at 6pm. The training will begin on August 19, from 10am to 4pm, with sports and aquatic activities, and first aid training. It will last for six months and an accreditation certificate of their qualifications will be issued upon completion.
Visitors continued to arrive on Wednesday, renting all the golf carts. The more than 700 golf carts were in high demand, from the 24 rental agencies ("of whom, the grand majority of owners are politically connected" says PE), but the boats that offer tours in the bay were only operating at about fifty percent. A "saldo blanco" (no major incidents) was reported and there was increased surveillance at the beaches to prevent more thefts of the belongings of tourists.
