Friday morning, a turtle was found in a state of advanced decomposition, which had apparently become stuck in the rocks after nesting. Residents who leave near the beaches where the sea turtles nest say that surveillance in these areas is insufficient. The adult turtle was found in an advanced state of purification, in the area across from the airfield, trapped between two rocks. It was in an area that has little traffic and notice because of the odor.
On August 5, a turtle of the green species was also trapped between rocks, but on that occasion the animal was rescued by neighbors and volunteers. In the case this week, the story unfortunately did not have a happy ending, because everything seems to indicate that the animal died after being exposed to the sun for some hours.
There was a case of a turtle that was attacked by predators, which died moments after it was abandoned by its captors.

Starting today, the island consumers and tourists will have the guarantee that the products or services that they acquire in Isla Mujeres are of quality. Thanks to PROFECO for supporting us to take this important step for the municipality.https://goo.gl/8p8uAk
The City Council works in a coordinated way with PROFECO in order to protect islanders and visitors.

The City of Isla Mujeres signed a collaboration agreement with the Federal Prosecutor's Office (PROFECO) through which it was agreed to install a Module of Consumer Attention, with the aim of safeguarding the rights of island consumers, and of those who visit the municipality. The mayor, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, said that this action will benefit the entire island community and tourists, as it will guarantee the quality of products and services in the destination, protecting consumers and helping to improve the economy of the islanders.
The Mayor said, "This collaboration agreement will coordinate efforts and implement work to provide certainty to consumers and promotion of good business practices and immediate actions in favor of islanders and tourists, It is an example of the coordinated work we have done with the federal government in Isla Mujeres."
The Module of Attention to the Consumer will offer personalized attention to islanders and visitors, as well as providing effective information and providing the means of defense to assert the rights that are established under the Federal Consumer Protection Laws. This will facilitate the resolution in a timely manner concerning the filing of complaints or of public complaints regarding items of consumer consumption, contributing to the strengthening of the social economy, and optimizing the economy and economic benefits for the population in general.
This will not only benefit those who inhabit the island, but also those who visit it, so that they leave with the satisfaction of receiving the right services or products for which they paid and feel protected against any eventuality," concluded the Mayor.  Other officials in attendance are named, who also commented about the efforts made toward this agreement and its benefits.

There's a promo for last evening's entertainment, Merenglass.

In Isla Mujeres, the government and community work hand in hand to strengthen the municipality and achieve a prosperous future for all. Let's continue to celebrate the 167th anniversary of the founding of our town!

The raid took place at about 3:00 pm, at a room marked with the number one, of the Hotel El Isleño, in Calle Madero, which is located next to the office of the Human Rights Commission of Quintana Roo.   This property has no name. The police officers of the three levels of government were inside the premises for several minutes, while that road was blocked, so that no vehicles could pass. Three municipal patrols were observed; which were two compact cars, one with the number 6026, and a patrol pick up truck.

Keeping seaweed under control
Recale de sargazo “bajo control”d.. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
The arrival of seaweed to the coasts of Quintana Roo this summer season, especially in the area where tourists frequent, has been annoying, but in Isla Mujeres, it is under control, according to the authorities and the businesses holding concessions in the Federal Zone.
Small amounts of seaweed have arrived to Playa Norte, especially on the east side, but the City cleaning staff are in charge of getting rid of it, in collaboration with the concessionaires. The seaweed arrives continuously, so this is an ongoing task. Beaches like North Beach and Playa Centro look impeccable and meet international standards.

There is constant monitoring of sand and water quality control by the Federal Commission for Protection against Health Hazard (COFEPRIS) to guarantee its use by thousands of tourists who visit every day in this summer season.
Mexican Navy personnel who stand guard to provide assistance to swimmers, confirmed that there has been a "saldo blanco" (no serious incidents) during this vacation period, but there have been some minor injuries to half a dozen visitors from tripping over boards, for example; and some have suffered fainting from heat stress.
No one has drowned, and the water is only about one meter deep, ~30 meters out from the beach, mostly, with no strong currents.

Increasing protection for turtles
Refuerzan protección para las tortugas. [+] Ver masFull article at this link

In the days following the killing of a sea turtle on a nesting beach, the municipal authorities who conduct the program of sea turtle protection and conservation have announced that they will increase surveillance of the nesting areas to prevent further predation.
An official with the Ecology Department said that work is being done between the three levels of government to coordinate efforts via "Strategies of Action for the Protection of Turtles", following a working meeting that was held to evaluate this issue. The meeting included representatives of the Navy of Mexico, of the Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) and of the municipal departments of Civil Protection, Ecology, and the Tortugranja, as well as several guests.
He said, "As part of the commitments assumed by the administration of Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, to take care of the environment, and especially, for the preservation of species that are in danger of extinction, we will act firmly against predators."
Antonio Coronado Rojas, municipal General Secretary, said that the island receives thousands of tourists each year and also "very special visitors", such as the extraordinary sea turtles who arrive in each nesting season, from mid-May to September.  "Unfortunately for this species, their survival has not been easy, since the sale of their meat and eggs is an activity that still occurs, in the underground".  He said that this is the reason why surveillance will be increased in the nesting areas, with collaboration from the community, which is expected to achieve greater success.
No one has been detained, but the participation of the Mexican Navy will be forceful to prevent further cases of predation. He said that the municipal government is committed to caring for each of the nests, the offspring, and the adult turtles that come to our coasts, therefore it is necessary to improve the surveillance strategy in coordination with the three levels of government, the protective associations, and the community.
Hundreds of sea turtle nests of the green, loggerhead and hawksbill species are currently being protected in the prepared sandy areas at the Tortugranja, and thousands of hatchlings are expected to be released by November. This work has taken place at the same location since the beginning of the 1960's, which is more than half a century of work.
