A practice as simple as saying NO 🙅🏽🚫🙅🏽to straws can save the lives of turtles 🐢 and other marine animals🦈🐠🐬🐙.
It says...Say NO to straws. A straw takes up to 100 years to degrade. 90% of whales, dolphins, and turtles consume plastic.
The care and protection of sea turtles🐢 is the job of everyone, from all three levels of government, as well as islanders and tourists.
If you want to be part of the change, volunteer with the Tortugranja, and bring your identification between 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and help us to take care of these animals.

Isla Mujeres breaks records for the number of turtle nests
The nesting season concludes on October 15, and to date 836 nests have been protected, compared to 508 nests last year. It is hoped that the previous record of 1500 nests will be achieved.
For the purpose of caring for and protecting the turtles that come to the coast of Isla Mujeres to spawn year after year, the municipal government is working in coordination with the Department of the Navy (SEMAR), the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) and the Ministry of the Environment (SEMA) at the surveillance of the 9 nesting areas. As part of the coordinated work, the 2017 Marine Turtle Protection Program Committee was formed in May. Isla Mujeres was a forerunner in the care of this species. In the 1950s, in the space where the Tortugranja is located, there was a facility where work was carried out to monitor and preserve turtles.
"With the support of the authorities of the three levels of government, monitors, volunteers and the island community, we are taking care of the beaches on the eastern side of the island, where the nesting areas of the turtles are located, hoping to surpass the previous largest number, which was 1,500 nests in 2015, " said Deline García Canto, director of Tortugranja. She said that thanks to the efforts of President Juan Carrillo Soberanis, efforts have been redoubled to avoid poaching and predation, which is vital to ensure preservation of the turtles.
She concluded, "Although we have managed to double the number of nests, compared to last year, the nesting season is not yet over. We need to continue working, especially in the tasks of awareness, so we ask the public for their collaboration; to report any act of mistreatment, poaching and the illegal sale of eggs, meat or any product derived from sea turtles."
Thanks to the participation of the three levels of government, islanders and visitors, this year Tortugranja has protected 836 nests of turtles🐢 in # IslaMujeres🌴, 328 more than last year.

El Meco buoy receives maintenance. https://goo.gl/PLouA3 The Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (APIQRoo) invested 210,740 pesos to put the Meco buoy into operation, which was completed yesterday, after it had been ignored for more than two years. New lights were installed.
The Director of APIQRoo, Alicia Ricalde Magaña, explained that one of the responsibilities of the agency is to operate and maintain the system of maritime signage in good condition in the ports it manages. She said, "One of the priorities of Governor Carlos Joaquín is to improve and modernize the maritime infrastructure of Quintana Roo, in addition to providing security for the boats that pass thru the waters of Quintana Roo."
She explained that one of its functions is to assist navigation over short distances. "The first buoys indicate the entrance to the port and the second ones indicate the lines of direction that the ships must follow when they enter and leave the maritime terminals. She said, "It is a structure that will receive constant maintenance so that it does not deteriorate again."

Staff from the Tourism Office reported a "saldo blanco" during the day, and
no problems of any kind were reported on the beaches, except for minor
incidents, confirmed the Director of Promotion, Gustavo Rodríguez. Thousands of tourists enjoyed a sunny Sunday, and the waters by North Beach were full of private yachts and tourist boats.
The Tourist Police are paying particular attention to the beaches after there were cases of thefts of tourist belongings in previous weeks. There is an ongoing operation to prevent more cases. The Harbor Master also reported a "saldo blanco" (no major incidents). The 700 golf carts were in use, and about 50 percent of the small tour boats were in operation. The Port Authority reported a good amount of movement thru the Terminals at Punta Sam, Puerto Juarez, and Isla Mujeres. The whale shark tours and dive tours operated normally, and the attractions of the island were busy, including Tortugranja, Punta Sur, the Mundaca Hacienda, and Garrafon Park.

After several weeks of Isla Mujeres taxi driver union leader Eduardo Peniche Rodríguez "Wato" ignoring a judicial decision, the opposition group has announced that they will convene an electoral assembly on September 14. One of the serious contenders to replace the controversial leader "Wato", who has been at the helm of the union for more than 12 years, is Miguel Ángel Chan Mena. He confirmed this information and said the details will be announced next week.
He said they are going to use the Federal Labor Law, which states that 33 percent of the members have the right to convene an assembly of this nature, but that they have the capacity to assemble at least 50 percent of those registered.

The Ecology Department set up an operation on Saturday at the two main beaches of Isla Mujeres and found six dogs. According to regulations, this is prohibited, and their owners were told to remove them. This was confirmed by the Deputy Director of Ecology, José González, who led the operation. He asked people to refrain from bringing their pets to North Beach and Playa Centro, which are attractions that are under strict sanitary controls, in accordance with the international regulations that govern these beaches.
The officials said, "The owners of the six animals that were found in the operation were surprised by the prohibition, because by force of habit they have been doing this for some time. Agents of the Tourist Police are being trained to assist with these control measures."
Most of the dog owners live in the colonias, and they are accustomed to bringing their dogs to spend time at the beach on a regular basis. It is estimated that at least 10 animals are coming to the beach every day, since this operation took place between 1pm and 4pm. This presents a risk of pollution to the sand and water, and is in conflict with the rules and regulations concerning these natural attractions.
Pet owners have already been advised at different times to refrain from taking their dogs to the beach, which has reduced this practice, but it is desired to definitively stop this now that they are becoming ready to apply the Pet Protection Regulations. These regulations will be applied during this 'semester' , and currently legal preparations are being carried out regarding the administrative procedures for sanctions, since they are ready to register the animals.
José González, deputy director of Ecology, has already worked on this issue with the community during the previous triennium and managed to notify, in the company of volunteers, about 70 families to avoid leaving their animals in the street, to keep them contained and to walk them on a leash. At least 10,000 dogs and cats must be brought under control, who are presently living on this small island, with efforts by the government and the community..
