MAYOR JUAN CARRILLO IS WORKING FOR A GOVERNMENT IN FAVOR OF THE EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN
Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis, signed a collaboration agreement with the Quintanarroense Institute for Women IQM), headed by Dr. Silvia Damián López. He said, "Violence against women is exercised in different ways and to eradicate it , society must actively participate. In this administration we are committed to working to combat all types of violence against women and girls, promoting preventative measures, and encouraging women to inform themselves about their rights, and above all to make a complaint if these rights are not respected, " he said.
Miriam Trejo León, director of the Municipal Women's Institute (IMM), explained that this collaboration with the state government will strengthen the agency in Isla Mujeres, to provide the workshops and courses of gender perspective, as well as the necessary resources to continue their work. She said, "We have a strong commitment to working for women, and this agreement is very important, so that with the support of the state government we can continue our work. Currently our fight is against gender violence and addressing the issue of teenage pregnancy, "

With the support of institutions such as the Institute of Culture and Arts and the Department of Tourism, the party starts with "Isla Fest 2017", which will bring together more than 50 artists on stage, an event for all those who wish experience the joy, beauty and culture of Isla Mujeres.
During the five days of the festival, at 5:30 p.m., a large popular festival of Art and Flavors of Isla Mujeres Fair will be held in the main square.(NOTE--Wednesday it's at the Casa de la Cultura, according to the schedule).
On August 15 will be the Night of Traditions, which includes a walk thru the town streets dressed in clothing that is typical of the region (terno y huipil). On the 17th, at 8:00am, floral wreath will be deposited to the Cruz de la Bahía and at 6:30p there will be a presentation of the Citizen and Tourism Merit awards, then at 8:30p the well known Comedian and imitator Pierre David will perform.
On August 18 will be the presentation of the famous group "Merenglass". And on the 19th, the "Super Lamas", will perform at 8pm on the Town Square. To finish on August 20, at Playa Centro, at 2:00 p.m., there will be an electronic music festival, and at night there will be cultural events on the Town Square. All events are free.
The Four Elements
One of the surprises for islanders and tourists will be the arrival of actor Cristian de la Fuente, who will participate in this celebration as ambassador of the Mayan Circuit "The Four Elements," to be held on September 17.
This Pueblos Magicos race of represent the four elements of nature, which in the case of Isla Mujeres is the wind -lik'-. More than 500 runners are expected to participate, who may be children, youth and adults in male and female categories, both beginners and experts.
The race will include three distances: 5, 10 and 15 kilometers and each area will include the categories Juvenile (12 to 20 years), Free (21 to 39 years) and Master (40 years and over). In addition to parallel to the race will be held artistic and cultural events in accordance with the traditions of the island, so the municipal president encourages runners from all over Mexico and Quintana Roo to register and to experience running around the most beautiful island in the Caribbean.
"Our island is celebrating 167 years since its foundation with sports, music, art, food, and a great deal of fun, for both islanders and those who visit us from abroad and other parts of the country. We are very excited for both events, as they are an excellent promotion for the destination, "said Juan Carrillo Soberanis.
The mayor invited the general public to join in the celebrations of the island and enjoy all the activities prepared for the occasion, which will undoubtedly bring great economic benefits to all the families of Isla Mujeres and will provide opportunities for the tourists to have fun.

Municipal government working for the benefit of islander students
The City of Isla Mujeres signed an agreement with the organization "Volunquest" to teach English classes in elementary schools. The Mayor said, "It is a reality that English is a language that unites cultures, especially in destinations such as ours, where we receive millions of visitors from around the world; in this municipal administration, we know that learning is indispensable, so we join with Volunquest for the benefit of our children."
The mayor said that the government he heads is completely committed to education, therefore they are investing 423,400 pesos to serve 1,828 students. He said, "We are convinced that betting on learning English is one of the best investments that a society, a government and parents can make for children. With students who are more prepared thanks to a quality education, we're ensuring a good future for Isla Mujeres."
The director of Municipal Education, Rossana Martinez Cen, explained that the agreement will allow Volunquest to teach English in preschools and elementary schools in Isla Mujeres: "For now we are working on the island, but we hope these classes will also be extended to the Continental Zone, " she said.
She said that this agreement is renewed every 6 months for 5 years, a requirement set by the Ministry of Public Education for all municipalities, Isla Mujeres being the first to comply, with support from the organization "Volunquest". Names and titles are given of officials in attendance.

The lifeguards who help tourists in need on the beaches of Isla Mujeres have had their basic health knowledge tested when assisting visitors injured by recklessness or who have suffered bites from crabs, according to information obtained from the Department of Civil Defense. (The lifeguards and firefighters are a part of this agency called Protección Civil).
So far this year, between 13 to 15 swimmers have been injured by falls caused by recklessness at the private piers or at the geotubes installed by Playa Norte to curb erosion. Four people have been bitten by crabs in the water, especially in the areas where sea products are brought to shore, since the crabs come to feed themselves on this, and when they come in contact with people's feet, they attack in defense, said the lifeguards. The most recent incident was at Playa Sol, where a child was bitten and service providers offered assistance and placed four butterfly bandages to the wound to help prevent infection.
Except for these incidents, the beaches of Isla Mujeres are safe, and there have been no injuries from sea urchins. It is recommended to stay away from the areas where there is seaweed, where this species exists. (no avanzar en zona de pastos marinos). There have been no injuries from rays, nor from spines of fish in the swimming areas. The lifeguards have also offered help to people who felt faint due to heat stress and fatigue. Their goal is to assist tourists in these types of situations.
The lifeguards also admonish swimmers a few times a day who go beyond the buoy area, and there is also the problem of boats who tie up to the buoy lines. A lifeguard said, "We have to ask five to six boats a day to stop tying onto the buoys and to use their anchors to park in the area by the buoys boundaries."
The only serious incident at the beach so far in 2017 occurred a month ago when an Israeli tourist went swimming at North Beach while inebriated and was rescued in the open seas by fishermen in the area northeast of Isla Contoy National Park.
The lifeguards monitor the beaches to ensure their safe use on a daily basis and to prevent accidents, without any deaths by drowning, so far, at the two busiest beaches. "The beaches of the island are very safe, there are no sea urchins in the swimming area," they concluded.
Internet service failures

There were some interruptions of internet service during the weather caused by the passage of Tropical Storm Franklin. The latest interruption occurred during a rain shower before 2pm on Thursday, when took more than 15 minutes to reestablish service to various parts of the island, according to internet users.
Problems began on Monday, and on Tuesday there were problems with banking deposit services, and usage of credit cards at various stores. Although the rainfall was not torrential, there were failures in service associated with them. There have also been some complaints about interruptions in electrical service that in many cases just lasted a few seconds, but some users experienced an outage for four hours at the beginning of the week.

The two-day enrollment period for the Middle School, Benito Juarez, began on Thursday, and about 217 students are expected among the six first-year groups. Classes resume on Monday, August 21.

Aug. 10, The whale shark tours resumed after three days of inactivity caused by effects from the Tropical Storm Franklin. The whale sharks are in an area more than 30 kilometers northeast of Isla Mujeres where they visit annually to feed on plankton and the eggs of the fish called "bonito", in the waters of the Yucatan Channel in the spring-summer season. Some boats make the trip twice a day to meet the high level of demand.The tour season is scheduled to end on Sept. 17.
This year the number of permits were reduced from 304 to 240, and there has been controversy about whose permits were reduced or cancelled. More than one third of the permit holders are from Isla Mujeres and the others are from the municipalities of Lazaro Cardenas (Holbox) and Benito Juarez (Cancun). There is also controversy about larger businesses with multiple boats offering these services, and requests for more transparency in the awarding of permits. According to the spirit of conservation of natural spaces, and sustainability, the permits should favor the immediate inhabitants by proximity, in this case, the fishermen and seamen of the municipalities of Isla Mujeres and Lázaro Cárdenas. One or two requests from local cooperatives have already been channeled to SEMARNAT, but almost all were ignored, so these seamen expect to be taken into account in 2018.
