Port activity is estimated to have risen by almost 20 percent, and hotel occupancy is around 80 percent (in the municipality). The promotional efforts of the City of Isla Mujeres, led by the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, and in coordination with state and federal agencies, to encourage tourism to this Pueblo Magico contributes to a greater number of visitors arriving during the current summer season, which brings economic benefits to the families of the island.

There's a video that says...In 2017, the number of tourists coming to Isla Mujeres increased by 15% compared to last year. APIQRoo (state Port Authority) registered 2,372,299 passengers (I think this is counting each passenger arriving and each passenger departing).

Donated backpacks delivered to students in Francisco May

"Mochileando 2017" exceeded their goals by collecting and distributing 132 backpacks to rural children whose families have limited resources. The project was started by Isla Mujeres teacher Blanca Ochoa Gómez and her husband David Dzul Méndez, after they observed many children in rural communities carrying their school books and supplies in plastic bags.
They hoped to gather 100 new & gently used backpacks by setting up a collection center at their home in colonia La Gloria and inviting donations via social networks and among schools, businesses, and teachers. Donors were invited to include a letter of encouragement and support for the girl or boy receiving the backpack.
After a month, the collected backpacks were distributed to children in Francisco May, on the mainland part of the municipality of Isla Mujeres, as well as to to Popolá and Santa Rita in the state of Yucatán.
This was the first year for this successful project, which is expected to continue year after year, hopefully with more and more donations to support a large number of low-income students.

country in search of better opportunities offered by the growth of the tourism industry at Punta Sam and Isla Blanca.

For the first week of the holiday period, overall occupancy in the municipality was 80%, and was reported at 58% on the island and at 87% in the Continental Zone. The HIM (Isla Mujeres Hotel Assn.) reported 87% on Friday. (This information was been translated yesterday in the DQR section).
No incidents at the beaches

A "saldo blanco" on the beaches of the island and Continental Zone has been reported by those in charge of safety and security, which means there have been no serious incidents. Visitors are asked to comply with warning signs and advisories from lifeguards and other personnel to avoid risks to their personnel safety. Tourism service providers are asked to cooperate with the efforts to prevent tourists from swimming in unsafe areas, such as Media Luna Beach, where there are whirlpools and undertow currents.
It is also noted that staff with the Civil Protection agency will begin attending courses on Monday in first aid training, urban fire fighting, search and rescue, and evacuation of buildings. These four workshops will be taught by specialists with the National School of Civil Protection, and it will save time and money that they are coming to the staff to train them, rather than previously when personnel had to travel.
Reinforcement of the cemetery wall resumed

Work has resumed on the cemetery wall, to reinforce the area where there is a small chapel building, to prevent further collapsing. This area is a few meters from the section that was rebuilt after collapsing in October. It is expected that more work will be done to reinforce the wall along the prolongation of Hidalgo street which leads to North Beach, because there are also cracks in this area. Many tourists walk thru this area and there are concerns that someone could be hurt if the wall were to fall.
Within solid structures, the steel deteriorates with the passage of time, and in some cases within two decades there is deterioration that causes weakening. There have been some accidents with no major consequences, and it is advised that public buildings receive maintenance to prevent accidents, including the two cemeteries, the tourist palapas, and the playgrounds & sports facilities.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.
