Fishing fans, tourists, and the community gathered Saturday morning at the dock of the cooperative "Caribe" for the start of the XIV edition of the International Fishing Tournament "Cosme Alberto Martinez Magaña", with the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis. He spoke about the importance of supporting these events. In addition to being a tradition in the municipality, the tournament benefits the growth and development of the economy of Isla Mujeres. He said, "The tournament attracts sports tourism, generates lodging and increased economic activity," he explained.
This is  "Catch and Release" tournament, in order to maintain the billfish species and thereby to ensure attracting  more fishing fans, who will find the waters around Isla Mujeres to be the right place to fish. This year there are 100 boats participating, from Quintana Roo, Veracruz, Campeche, and the United States.
The weighing in will begin at 2:30 and the scale closes at 6p. The prizes will be awarded on Sunday at Playa Centro, with a total value of over 1 million pesos. Names and titles of officials participating in the start of the tournament are given.

At the close of the first day of the Cosme Magana International Fishing Tournament, no one had caught a blue marlin, which could result in an automatic win on Sunday. The organizing committee published the results, and the Isla Mujeres boat "VYV Fish" is in first place with 2569 points, which were accumulated by catching a Wahoo, a barracuda, and a released sailfish. The boat "Off Duty" is in second place with a score of 2042 points and "Mavie" is in third place with 2021 points. The rest of the participants have less than 1900 points. (The list is at the link)
On Sunday, the final day of the tournament, the boats will depart at 8am and the weighing in closes at 5pm. The prizes will be awarded at 7pm on Playa Centro. (DQR says that the scale opens at 2:30p.)
It is noted that this competition was cancelled twice, and is taking place under the leadership of the Mayor in coordination with the organizing committee and the relevant municipal agencies.

A red 2012 Chevy Camaro with license plates from the state of Queretaro was recovered when ministerial agents were patrolling at the intersection of Matamoros and Hidalgo, in downtown Isla Mujeres. It had been reported stolen in that state on May 13th. The vehicle was impounded and turned over to the ministerio público del fuero común officials, in order to take action to locate the owner and return it to them. With these actions the Attorney General confirms their commitment to recovering the trust of the general public.

June 24   After more than a week of the port being closed for boats under 40 feet, due to storm that affected the entire region, the Harbor Master authorized navigation by all vessels. The 14th Cosme Alberto Martinez Magana Fishing Tournament is taking place. Recreational activities are in full swing, and the dozen or so dive shops went out, while more than 60 larger boats sailed the waters of the Bay bringing tourists to the island beaches, under the brilliant sun.
From 10am onward, people were arriving to Playa Centro and North Beach, coming on ferries from Punta Sam, Puerto Juarez, and the Hotel Zone. It is noted that the fishermen were able to go out, but that conditions should improve on Sunday when the water should be less turbid. They are ready to begin the lobster season on July 1st for the next eight months, with the prices increased for 450/kilo for live lobster and 650/kilo for tails.
The new palapas at the fishing camp in Isla Contoy National Reserve for the five cooperatives are nearly finished. The fishermen will use them when they install nets in the bay of the Reserve during the fall-winter period when they migrate ("corren"..run), moving from north to south.
The wind and waves forecast is given.
