Playa Centro holds the distinction of having the Blue Flag designation, which is an annual award and environmental certification system developed by the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) since 1987. It promotes and rewards participation in voluntary environmental initiatives by municipal authorities, local people, visitors, and those in the tourism industry. The criteria for obtaining the Blue Flag are grouped into four areas: Water quality for swimming, environmental information & education, environmental management & safety, and services & facilities.
North Beach has the White Flag certification, which complies with the Mexican law "Norm 120". This regulation includes measures to protect the environment on Mexican beaches by taking care of water quality, trash management, coastal infrastructure, biodiversity, safety & services, environmental education, and noise pollution to ensure that tourists visit places that are clean and well kept.

The City is pruning trees and cleaning storm drains as measures of prevention before hurricane season. The head of Civil Protection and the Firefighters, Helman Ulises Berman Graniel asked that residents cooperate by keeping the areas in front of their homes clean to prevent clogging the storm drains when it rains.

Firefighters put out a fire during the wee hours of the morning
  http://www.tvislamujeres.com.mx/madrugan-bomberos-de-isla-…/
It was around 4:30am when neighbors in colonia La Gloria alerted police about smoke coming out of the former grocery store "El Paso", which has been closed for several years. The flames were quickly controlled by the firefighters (and neighbors, according to the comments).
The cause has not yet been determined, and a short circuit has not been ruled out. However, some neighbors said they saw two people leave the premises, and one neighbor recorded a video, then later the fire started. However, other neighbors explained that sometimes drunks use it as a place to sleep. Neighbors consider the property as a public space, and there is a dispute about it between neighbors señora Cahuich Huchim and señor Felipe Xiu Chan. Because of this disagreement, municipal authorities decided to close the building, and there has been a 13 year old legal battle.
The business is located at Manzana 161, lote 22 in colonia La Gloria. Inside the building, some kitchen items were ruined and there was damage to the electrical system.

Celebration of father Jesus Martinez Penilla's 82nd birthday

Father Jesus Martinez Penilla, who dedicated much of his pastoral life to Isla Mujeres, celebrated his 82nd birthday with friends. He lives in a house of retreat for priests in Cancun, and visits the island weekly, especially Punta Sur where he goes to contemplate God. He enjoyed his cake and the celebration.
In a previous article, he was interviewed while visiting Punta Sur, and talked about the need for better communication between parents and children, and expressed his appreciation for the the kindhearted Catholics of Isla Mujeres.

They want to renovate their pier

The fishing cooperative "Isla Blanca" holds a 15 year concession on their Federal Zone property (2015-2030) of 654 square meters. They are now seeking permission to renovate their pier, which is in bad condition, to use it to moor their boats.
They have occupied this property since the early 1990's and in 2000 the federal concession went into effect. They were evicted in 2011, but in the end they won that legal battle, which lasted four years, and meanwhile their pier deteriorated, and they lost some federal grant monies.

Port was open for small boats in the Bay only

Trips to Isla Contoy, fishing, and recreational activities in the open sea by small boats were prohibited, but they were allowed to operate within the Bay. The weather was cloudy all day with a threat of rain, which didn't occur until after 3pm. Winds at sea were from 30 to 40 kph.
Storms are forecast for Sunday due to the remnants of "Beatriz" in combination with tropical wave  #3, which is located south of Guerrero, and is likely to cause strong storms in the southern part of the country and the Yucatan Peninsula.

Navigation channel is free of sand
Libre el canal de navegación de arena+] Ver masFull article at this link
The navigation channel in front of Playa Centro had become full of sand, but  the southeastern winds have moved that sand from the channel to Playa Norte, where it is replacing beach that had eroded. Now the buoys are back in the water which had been on the beach when it grew outward.
Lifeguards are on duty from 9am to 5pm and they advise tourists to stay within the buoy line, and after those hours, visitors are their own to use good judgement. Warnings have been posted in English & Spanish, but some swimmers ignore them and enter the navigation channel area, beyond the buoys.
There are also buoys delineating the swimming area for Playa Norte and almost a dozen lifeguards to ensure swimmers stay within that area.  Boaters are asked not to tie up to the buoy line, which contributes to its breaking.
