An event in honor of the Isla Mujeres teachers, for Teacher's Day, was held at the Monument to Teachers, which is located in colonia Amplificacion La Gloria at the intersection of Jesus Martinez Ross street and Jose Maria Sabatini. A wreath was placed and Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis spoke about his gratitude for the great work that teachers do, and he gave incentives and recognition to the teachers who had worked for 25, 30, and 40 years.
Names of other officials in attendance are given, and quotes from the Mayor's speech.

The audio with this video says: Playa Centro in Isla Mujeres is one of the few beaches in Mexico to have earned the Blue Flag distinction. This certification is granted by the European Environmental Education Foundation to beaches that meet criteria of quality, security, environmental education and information. Thanks to the work of the municipal government of Isla Mujeres 2016-2018, Playa Centro has proudly earned an A+ rating of excellence, because of the cleaning and care of the beach. Not only have they managed to maintain the Blue Flag, but this year it will be ratified again
Successful night of the Caribbean Culture Festival
With the combination of the voice of the soprano Mary Grogan, a harp and a percussion box, the artists presented an emotional jazz opera performance to a select audience gathered in the Chapel of Guadalupe in colonia Salinas, as part of the activities of the Festival of Caribbean Culture (Fecuca) in Isla Mujeres.
These events will continue through May 20 with the goal of strengthening the identity of residents of the state and it contributes to healthy lifestyles and improved and increased opportunities for families.
The Festival focuses on Quintana Roo as a member of the Caribbean and it contributes to Mexico's participation as a Caribbean nation. The festival celebrates our common roots in art, history, narratives, which make us all related within our differences and uniqueness. The Director of the Institute of Culture and Arts, Ruben Perez Martin, attended and represented the Mayor. He encouraged the islanders to continue to attend these events and to enjoy the various talented artists and their exhibitions and performances as part of this festival May 13-20th in Isla Mujeres.
May 15 Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis inaugurated the Municipal Basketball League at the Convention Center and said he is committed to the athletic community of the island and promoting activities that encourage healthy lifestyles and team spirit. He said he is committed to having the best public areas for sports and for children, youths, and families to enjoy recreation in general.

City is working to prevent flooding when it rains
City employees were cleaning away litter to prevent flooding during the rains when it clogs the storm drains. This work was carried out in a coordinated manner along the main roads of the municipality including the colonia of La Gloria, the streets of Hidalgo and Abasolo, Martinez Ross Avenue, and the areas around the Casa de la Cultura, Salina Grande lake, and Salina Chica.
Residents are asked to participate in these preventative actions by cleaning up the areas in front of their homes and avoiding littering.

Surveillance operations continue at the Maritime Terminal

The Federal Preventive Police (PFP), in coordination with the Mexican Navy, continue to conduct operations and random inspections at the Isla Mujeres Maritime Terminal, which is applauded by most islanders. These operations began with the Easter holiday season and although there have been no significant seizures so far, they serve the purpose of inhibiting drug trafficking.
These reviews have provoked reactions, since the inconvenience annoys certain tourists, but on the other hand, this ensures the safety of those who live on the island.
Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis applauded the operation and said there is coordination between all three levels of government to ensure the safety of those who live on the island. The truth is that the presence of federal officers reassures many of the tourists who seek to escape the insecurity that exists in our state.

Aguakan promotes use of their app in Isla Mujeres

Aguakan Water and Sewage service company is encouraging its customers in Isla Mujeres to use the new technological tool developed to streamline communication with thir 370,000 customers. It is a free mobile application available for Android and iO. It allows customers to communicate quickly with the company regarding various issues including leaks or service problems, with a single click. It allows customers to know details about their consumption and average consumption, encouraging conservation. The customer can register their contract number to receive alerts about due dates, interruptions in service, nearest service centers, and information about procedures.

There was a proposal for a boat procession across the 70 kilometers of sea and mangroves to Boca Iglesia as part of the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the Catholic faith, which is considered to be the first building built by the Spanish in Mexico. The Catholics want to facilitate communication and awaiting for harmony (an agreement) to be worked out between the government and the owner of the property, which has been fenced with barbed wire. Members of the church hope the procession can be carried out in 2018, and have cancelled it for this year.
In early March, 1517 Francisco Hernández de Córdoba arrived to the region and encountered the first resistance from the Maya at Ekab, which was a seat of one of the jurisdictions in the peninsula. The Spaniards had the advantage of armaments in the battle. The first two baptisms of Mayans, Melchor and Julian, were performed at this site, where the convent would be erected. This historic event is represented in the new mural (See translation above and previously about the mural)
It is thought to have been among the first churches in Mexico, and was abandoned in 1644, and are nearly in ruins now, in a remote and unpopulated corner of the peninsula, which can only be reached by small boats. The INAH, with a team of cultural heritage engineers from the University of California at San Diego have done laser scaning and thermography of these historically significant buildings to provide information and develop a strategy for preserving this piece of Mexico's heritage. One of the first to be interested in restoration of this site in the 1990's was Yucatecan archaeologist Luis Leira Guillermo, who passed away in February of this year and is recognized for his efforts in this area.

Tourism arrivals to the island on Monday were considerable reduced, and by afternoon about 3000 daytrippers had arrived to enjoy the island attractions and activities on land and sea. Occupancy rates in the small hotels are not exceeding 20 percent, and they say they do not expect much improvement with the arrival of the whale shark tour season. A receptionist at a downtown hotel commented, "In fact, there is almost no benefit for us because most of the visitors for swimming with the whale sharks come from Cancun and the Rivera Maya."
It was cloudy during the afternoon on Monday.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Wednesday, May 3 and Thursday, May 4, the Eta Aquarid meteor shower can be seen, but it peaks in the predawn hours of Friday and Saturday. It is caused by debris from Halley's Comet. The most meteors can be seen during the hours before 5a, when dawn starts (After moonset which is 1:33a on Wed, 2:18a on Thur., 3:00a on Fri, and 3:49 on Sat).
