Installation of the Marine Turtle Protection Program Committee for the 2017 season
"There are several generations of islanders who have joined this cause, which puts our municipality as one of the most committed in protecting this important marine species. The installation of this committee is further proof of the commitment of the administration headed by Mayor Juan Carrillo Soberanis to continue to contribute to this task, " he said.
Mr. Saury Galué said that the culture of turtle conservation dates back to the 1950s when the fisherman Don Gonzalo Chalé was among the first preservationists of the species, at the biological station, where the Tortugranja is now. The official presented equipment from the City, raincoats and flashlights, to the people who will be monitoring the turtle nesting areas from May 1 to October 30.
Also at the meeting, personnel from Dolphin Discovery made a presentation about the work which has been done to care for the dolphin that was stranded on the coast of the island on May 2. They explained that the dolphin is now eating on his own and they are awaiting further studies and permission from authorities for his release.
Those present at the meeting included municipal trustee, Suemy Gonzalez Sánchez; Alderman Sebastián Escobedo Jiménez; the Director of Ecology and Environment, Carlos Barranco García; the director of Tortugranja, Deline García Canto; the director of Pueblo Magico, Kilma Karina Figueroa; the Consultant of Projects of the Association "Amigos de Isla Contoy", Catalina Galindo de Price; and representatives of the Fifth Region Naval base in Isla Mujeres.
THE GOVERNMENT OF PRESIDENT JUAN CARRILLO IS COMMITTED TO THE CARE AND PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT
He said that the municipality of Isla Mujeres, as well as the state Quintana Roo, has begun a new phase in its political, economic and social life, which requires the design of public policies and clear strategies to maximize the competitive advantages of our municipality. Therefore, the Municipal Development Plan of Isla Mujeres 2016-2018, constitutes the main tool in which the vision, strategic principles, issues, and plans of action will mark the way to the Isla Mujeres which we all want.
"As a government, we have a firm intention to undertake policies that contribute to the care of the environment. We are in a municipality with a natural environment that is rich in biodiversity, and at the same time, which is fragile. This requires a firm commitment to its preservation, so that future generations of islanders can enjoy it as we do now," said municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis.
The correct and efficient management of trash is fundamental to ensure that the streets and public spaces are clean, that the environment is healthy, and to mitigate ecological impact. The issue of trash management is of paramount importance to the island's government, with the implementation of a plan, and the design of service routes and sectors throughout the municipality.
The municipal government is working at improving and increasing the equipment and infrastructure related to trash collection services, at the establishment of citizen participation programs to reduce the production of trash, as well as working to clean up the transfer station and acquire equipment that allows reception and separation of recyclable materials to be processed for reuse.
Commemoration of International Day of Migratory Birds
Isla Contoy, also known as Isla de los Pájaros (Bird Island), has been protected by the Mexican government since 1961 and was declared National Park in 1998.
The title of the talks was "Bird Detectives" (“Detectives de Aves”) and were carried out with coordination between: “Amigos de Sian Ka’an” under the supervision of Cecilia Álvarez Ricalde and Juan Flores Valadez, who are coordinators of the Urban Bird Program (Programa de Aves Urbanas) of the “Green Jay Mayan Birding Club”.
The event was attended by representatives of environmental organizations, the municipal Directors of the agencies of Urban Development and of Ecology and the Environment, teachers, Naval officials, and members of various governmental agencies. The municipal trustee, Suemy Gonzalez Sanchez, was acting as representative for the Mayor and spoke about the current administrations strategy to preserve the environment so the islanders will have a healthy quality of life, and so will the flora and fauna who inhabit the island. She said there is an interdependence between people and nature, and more specifically with migratory birds, because we share the same plane and the same limited resources.

On Saturday, the exceptional 5th and 6th grade students of Cesar Mendoza elementary school enjoyed a visit to the palco (stage?) of the “Beto Ávila” baseball stadium in the Continental Zone, which was donated by Governor Carlos Joaquín.

There was a weather forecast of cloudy weather for Wednesday afternoon and for Thursday, with possible intermittent rain on Thursday, with decreasing winds continuing out of the east and warm to hot temperatures.
Reading program
A reading program was begun with the Disney book "Beauty and the Beast" at the elementary school "César Mendoza", in the sixth grade classroom of teacher Gaby Ávila Braga with the intention of encouraging the habit of reading and good comprehension. It was read by alderwoman Athena Gomez.
The program intends to encourage motivation and attraction to reading, and therefore an invitation is extended to the public to donate special materials that are attractive to children and to participate by reading to the students, to improve their compression, and then they can recount it orally or in writing. They plan to distribute low cost materials to the students to encourage reading, because there is a low level of reading comprehension in Mexico that is similar to countries in the Pacific region.
Councilwoman Gomez said she was honored to be the first guest reader for this program and explained, "Its intention is to encourage the children to let their imagination fly, to know far away places, and to experience fun adventures through books."

The arrival of the whale shark permits from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) was delayed again this year and there has been no official statement. Of the 304 permits that are expected to be issued, 100 will be Holbox and Chiquilá, and 204 to Isla Mujeres, Puerto Juarez and Cancun. The season was scheduled for May 15-Sept. 17, and those offering tours are waiting for the green light from CONANP and DGVS, who monitor the areas of "Green waters" and "Blue waters". The Department of the Navy will participate in monitoring the whale shark tours, also, to ensure that everyone complies with the regulations of the Management Plan.

Good weather is forecast this weekend for the 14th International Tournament of Sport Fishing "Cosme Alberto Martinez Magaña", to be held May 19-21 May. As of Wednesday afternoon there were 39 boats registered. The head of the organizing committee, Humberto Moguel, said in the past 80% of the participants have registered on Thursday and Friday, and the number of crews could exceed the 122 of last year.
The cost of registration in advance is 5000 pesos, which increases to 6500 pesos on Saturday and Sunday. The prize amounts are listed (see Events section below). Last year, the winner was Julian Chablé's boat "Melissa" from Puerto Aventuras, with 27,000 points which was well ahead of the second place winner, Roberto Hankins boat "Crystal Blue" of Florida with 6757 points and third place was won by Abel Avila's boat "Elayne", of Isla Mujeres, with 6213 points. The winning score was historical with the crew catching two large blue marlins weighing 196 pounds and 193 pounds. The captains come from various parts of Quintana Roo, as well as from Veracruz, Merida and the United States.The species that qualify are: blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, wahoo, dorado, tuna, bonito and barracuda.

The most meteors can be seen during the hours before 5a, when dawn starts (After moonset which is 1:33a on Wed, 2:18a on Thur., 3:00a on Fri, and 3:49 on Sat).
