Alicia Ricalde Magaña, general director of the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo), said that the second stage of the Punta Sam maritime terminal project is ready to begin and is scheduled to start in June.
The first stage has been completed by the company "Planes Ingenieria" (Engineering Plans). The second stage of the project is large, and will involve an investment of about 40 million pesos. There is now an effort in process for a public announcement to solicit participation from several interested companies, said Ms Ricalde Magana.
She explained that although the work is unfinished, they will open some areas temporarily to provide facilities during the whale shark season, allowing access to the bathrooms and 'wet' area, which are completed.

Successful closing of the Caribbean Cultural Festival
The closing of the Caribbean Cultural Festival featured the Cuban group, "Chilangos de La Habana" and a performance by the Isla Mujeres Children's Ballet Folklorico, and by the dance troupe ''Añoranzas de Isla Mujeres''.
On behalf of the Mayor, the Director of the Institute of Culture and Art, Ruben Perez Martin, gave awards to the participants and thanked the audience, and all the participants and attendees of this Festival of Caribbean Culture (FECUCA 2017), which began on the island last weekend.

It was rescheduled to begin on Sunday, when it was hoped that conditions at sea would be more favorable for small boats, and then it was cancelled for today also, with an announcement that registrations would be refunded. It is rescheduled for the first weekend in June. Captain's dinner for Fishing Tournament Friday evening
The Mayor and his wife attended the Captain's dinner Friday night for the International Fishing Tournament Cosme Alberto Martinez Magana". During the event the Harbor Master, Miguel Ismael Gonzalez Gil, announced that the winds gusting up to 40 kph and waves of 1.5 to 2.1 meters were making conditions unfavorable for small boats to navigate in the open seas, but the situation would be reevaluated in the morning between 8-9am regarding whether the port would remain closed for small boats. The Committee announced that if the port remained closed on Saturday morning, the Tournament would be held on Sunday from 7am to 5pm, and registrations would remain open until then. Names of officials attending are given.
Ninth edition of the Water Rally
This event to raise awareness and offer education about water conservation included more than 80 youths from Benito Juarez (Cancun) Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Isla Mujeres.
Participants undertook various activities to test their physical and intellectual abilities, as well as having the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the processes which water undergoes before and after arriving in our homes.
The team Marino from Puerto Morelos won first place with 20 points, while team Jade from Cancun took second with 18 points, and team Dolphin, also from Cancun took third place with 17 points. Names of officials who attended are given.

Islanders celebrate 500 years of Catholic faith

The celebration of the 500 years of the Catholic faith in Isla Mujeres, scheduled for this weekend, with various liturgical activities, began with the presentation of presbiter Alvaro Carrillo Lugo who began the preaching at 5:30p, and who is well known and well loved in Isla Mujeres. More than 1500 people gathered on the Town Square in front of the Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception.
At 8 pm, the inaugural Mass was conducted by Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo, Bishop of the Cancún-Chetumal prelature, who was accompanied by the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis.
At the end of the Mass, around 9 pm, there was a procession with the Virgin and Jesus Eucharist, in downtown Isla Mujeres, with hundreds of faithful Islander Catholics participating. At 9:30m the plaque commemorating the 500 years of the arrival of the Catholic Faith was unveiled. this was followed by the blessing of the stone which will be used to start the construction of a Cross at Punta Sur.
The organizers of the event, including the presbitero (priest) of Isla Mujeres, Raul Sanchez Alons. said the first day of the celebration of the 500 year long legacy of the Catholic faith in Isla Mujeres was a complete success, and they expect twice as many people for the upcoming activities.

Second National Health Week begins

The Second National Health Week is taking place May 20-26 throughout the state with the intention of providing HPV vaccine (Human Papillomavirus) to all girls in fifth grade and all girls who are 11 years old who are not enrolled in the National Education System. Talks will also be offered, which will include and emphasize the importance of hand washing for prevention of many diseases.
The inauguration event was held at Julio Saury Espinosa elementary school. A little over 12,725 vaccinations will be administered throughout the state, with an adequate supply to cover the demand in Isla Mujeres. This vaccine can also be administered at the ISSSTE and at IMSS.

Rescued dolphin continues to recover

May 20 Three weeks after a dolphin was rescued below the cliffs of Isla Mujeres, his health continues to improve, as he recovers from a severe chronic gastric infection. Rosy Cerrillos, corporate manager of the marine animal specialists of Dolphin Discovery, said they can't estimate his release date at this time, and the specialists are continuing to take samples and do studies to monitor his progress, and recently did an ultrasound.
They said he is an adult dolphin, about 25 years old, of the type dientes rugosos/Rough Tooth (Steno Bredanensis), whose treatment began on May 2 at the municipal Tortugranja aquarium. At that time they stabilized his health, since he was suffering from a chronic gastric infection, dehydration, and parasites. He continued to receive 24 hour monitoring on the following days, until he began to recover.
The Dolphin Discovery Group are part of the "Stranded Marine Mammal Network" and responded to an official request for assistance to assess the health of the dolphin, and they will be responsible to help him recover fully before his release. The Rescue-Recovery protocol remains active, at the request of the Director of the Municipal Department of Ecology.
There is currently a contest to name the dolphin (You can vote on FB HERE).
Another dolphin, named Maya, was released in April 2015, after four weeks of care, when she had fully recovered from surgery to remove a kidney stone, however specialists say it could take longer for this dolphin to recover.

May 20 The strong east and southeastern winds which were blowing on Saturday at 4pm were not encouraging for the chances for navigation by small boats on Sunday morning, nor were the weather forecasts for Sunday morning, predicting the winds would continue. The port closed for small boats on Friday at 8pm, which continued on Saturday. Beaches were semi empty at Playa Centro where visitors were feeling the effects of the winds, but North Beach was more protected.

The CROC union office will be used by local real estate companies to provide information abut housing for those who want to review their points to obtain housing through Infonavit. There are many workers who are meeting the required scores and able to secure homes and a heritage for the future of their families.
9th Water Rally

May 19 The 9th Water Rally started this afternoon with the participation of 80 young people from Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen), as part of the awareness program about the proper use of water by the Aguakán company. The event began around 4pm with 20 registered teams fulfilling challenges at different stations, while reinforcing their knowledge about conservation of this vital liquid. Activities included a giant Jenga, rope pulling in the sea (a Tug of War?), a sort of mini-golf, Limbo, and planting trees.
The participants remained enthusiastic and energetic throughout the full day, which was scheduled to finish before midnight. The 80 competitors documented how Isla Mujeres obtained water when it was a fishing community in the 1970's, with use of a rainwater catchment site and wells.Use of this knowledge was included in the first stage of the contest. The Rally includes participation in various tests to challenge their physical and intellectual abilities, while giving them an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge about the processes through which water passes before and after reaching their homes.
Participants included two teams from Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen), two from Puerto Morelos, three from Isla Mujeres, and the rest were from Benito Juarez (Cancun). They are students from educational institutions including: Colegio Nacional de Educación Profesional Técnica (Conalep), Colegio del Caribe, Centro Universitario Anglo Mexicano (CUAM), Universidad del Caribe, Universidad Anáhuac, and Colegio de Bachilleres, among others.
Festival celebrating the arrival of the Catholic faith to Mexico began with a Mass

Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo, bishop of the Cancun-Chetumal prelature, conducted a Mass to initiate the celebrations to commemorate the arrival of the Catholic faith to Mexico. He described the events of March 1517 when the expedition of Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba, arrived to the coasts of Isla Mujeres, at the Mayan city Ekab, today the convent Boca Iglesia, near Cape Catoche, and the subsequent construction of what would become the first Convent in America, according to the historical account of Bernal Diaz de Castillo. This historical event is depicted on one side of a 30 meter square mural, including a representation of the first two baptisms of Mayan children, Melchor and Julian, by Fray Alonso Gonzalez. The other side depicts Our Lady of Immaculate Conception and the first bishop of Isla Mujeres, Monsignor Fabio Martinez Castilla, who is the spiritual leader of the diocese of Tuxtla Gutierrez.
The church was filled by nearly 1000 parishioners, with many dressed in green T shirts representing married couples who arrived from different parts of the country, especially the Southeast, for a spiritual marriage retreat in Isla Mujeres. A total of 400 people arrived from Tlaxcala, México City, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and, of course, Quintana Roo.
Celebrations will continue on Saturday with evangelization activities, a singer-songwriter, and a Catholic preacher, starting around 5:30pm and concluding around 10pm.
