May 21. The installation of street signs began yesterday at noon by a company from Cancun, who were installing signs in streets of colonia La Gloria. Workers said they would install 25 street signs in the colonias, and then they would conclude on Monday with 20 more on other streets in the colonias, for a total of 45 signs. (They are installing signs on poles at intersections, showing the names of streets. Previously, many street names were on the sides of buildings, or not indicated.)

Rehabilitation of storm drain covers is being done before rainy season/hurricane season, with a budget of 852,000 pesos, to minimize flooding, reduce the effects of rain, and to avoid accidents. Residents are invited to assist with these preventative actions by keeping the areas in front of their homes clean and to avoid littering in the streets to prevent accidents, because the trash clogs the drains and grids during rain, causing flooding.
Cultural and sporting activities are taking place starting Sunday in honor of Navy Day
For the children's drawing contest, "Los Marinos de mi Isla", 85 works of art were submitted by grade school students of the island. Prizes for the top three will be awarded on Tuesday May 30 at 6pm at the Casa de la Cultura. The Cultural Director, Ruben Perez Martin, invited islanders and visitors to participate in the various activities to commemorate Navy Day, which is the first of June.

Navy caught three fishermen with Queen Conch

May 26 -The Secretary of the Navy of Mexico reports that, in accordance with an Agreement with the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) for the preservation of conchs, yesterday Naval personnel discovered three people aboard a small boat with an outboard engine with approximately 40 Queen conchs (Caracol Rosado), in the vicinity of Puerto Juarez, Quintana Roo. They have been under a fishing ban since May 1 and their possession is a crime. The three fishermen and the conchs were turned over to the Attorney General of Benito Juarez.
In this way, the Mexican Navy reaffirms its commitment to the preservation and conservation of marine species and protected natural resources, as well as providing security in the areas of their jurisdiction.

Attempted burglary at small store

Someone cut the padlock on a small grocery in colonia La Gloria, on Paseo de las Aves during the predawn/late night hours, but security inside thwarted the thief. Owner Luis Lopez said this is the 11th burglary attempt, which have been successful more than once. In addition to being stopped by the security, a member of the family heard the noise and immediately called the police, and the officers arrived within minutes, but found no one.
Mr. Lopez has reinforced his security system, and sleeps next to his business, to prevent burglaries, since they have happened in the past. He said, "The police arrived quickly, but no one was seen." Burglaries have become more common in various parts of the island, with thieves sneaking into houses at night, and there has even been some cases during daylight.
It has been recommended that neighborhoods establish systems of communication, and it has been reported that residents in La Gloria and other areas are putting together this form of prevention in response to the increasing problem which authorities haven't been successful resolving.

Last year, fisherman Beder Baños Bertruy, 51, had open heart surgery at a Merida hospital, after having serious health problems for some time. During the surgery, his heart stopped beating, and the doctors massaged it to pump blood to his brain, which had reportedly ceased to emit any signal, due to lack of oxygen. He said he technically 'died' for 17 minutes.
He said, ""I was not afraid to die ... I entered a tunnel of lights... it is like air that goes fast. I was surrounded by angels, they protected me; as we know, Evil robs souls. The angels guarded me from what looked like clouds to the house of God."
He continues to suffer from kidney problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, and a loss of movement in his knees, but his faith in God has increased since he saw Him during that event. He described Him as "a very great being, with a long white beard. He shook my hand and told me that everything was fine."
He spoke about the experience, and says his faith in God helps him cope with his health problems, and that the heart operation was successful. He spoke from a wheelchair at his home, and explained how the specialists at IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute) plan to inject chemicals into his knees in upcoming weeks, in hopes of improvement.
He is the son in law of fisherman Buenaventura Delgado, aka “Coleguita”, who passed away in August.

The construction project to renovate five cabins at the fishing camp in Isla Contoy before the start of lobster season is progressing well. The president of the Federation of Fishing Cooperatives Of Quintana Roo, Baltazar Gómez Catzín explained that 2.5 million pesos were invested in the project, which is 500 thousand pesos per cabin. They should be ready by the start of lobster season on July 1st, which continues through February. The cabins are 100 percent occupied from October thru February, especially by fishermen who use nets and traps, who may spend a week or more taking advantage of the 'Norte" winds that blow during the last five months of the season.
The camp dates back to the 1970's, when federal officials authorized the temporary camping by the fishermen of Isla Mujeres and the nearby municipalities of Benito Juarez and Lazaro Cardenas. Since the area was made a Reserve by law more than 20 years ago, it was decided to only allow islander fishermen to camp, in order to control the presence of poachers ("piratas").

The release date for the dolphin recovering at the Tortugranja, under the care of specialists from Dolphin Discovery, could be scheduled in June, because his health is improving very well. The animal, which was rescued on May 2nd from the cliffs below colonia La Gloria, suffered from a serious gastric infection, parasites, and dehydration. It took days of ongoing treatment to stabilize him, and now he is recovering well. He was named "Paki" after three days of voting on social networks.
In April, 2015, a dolphin named "Maya" was released after recovering from kidney stones.
The staff of the municipal department of Landscaping (Dirección de Jardines y Ornato) have begun to maintain the downtown planters in an effort to improve the image of this destination. During this period of hot weather, the weather causes plants to wither and the winds bring dust. Residents suggested that an agreement should be made with Aguakan to irrigate the public areas and make them green, which occurs naturally during the rainy season and continues for the remainder of the year.
