Mayor is committed to the improvement of public spaces including the downtown basketball court with an investment of 1.3 million pesos, which includes a new surface of 10 centimeters in depth and 748 square meters, as well as benches, grandstands, lights, painting, and landscaping. Mayor supervises pothole repairs

These repairs will benefit residents and visitors of the island, as well as the mainland, and their vehicles. The Mayor thanked the municipal workers who are participating in this campaign and he said he is aware of the importance of having good quality public services, including decent roads. He said his administration is continuing to work at improving public services.

Fishermen and residents in the area of the Chacmuchuch lagoon are complaining about the lack of official surveillance to prevent poachers from taking fish and setting nets in the area. This area has been considered a Protected Natural Area for more than 18 years, but it lacks attention and surveillance. Sr. Orlando Medina Alcocer posted videos and photos about the dead animals that end up in the poachers nets.

Repairs along Caribbean road

May 12 On Friday, the road repair brigade was working along the coastal road in the area of the high school, and on Monday they should finish with the section of more than half a kilometer in front of colonia La Gloria. In the end, this repair should include about 1500 meters of road that were badly repaired by Aguakan. It is recalled that the government repaired the roads after they were damaged by hurricane Wilma in 2005, and then Aguakan broke into the newly repaired road along about three kilometers, and left it badly patched. These uneven area have caused accidents when drivers lost control of their motorcycles or bicycles.

May 12 At the downtown Catholic Church, the new mural will be inaugurated on Friday, May 19, along with the Cicodélico museum, by Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizono, as part of the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the Catholic faith to Isla Mujeres.
The painting of 30 square meters on both sides of the presbytery was done by two young women from Merida, Mayra and Naisa Uits Coello. It represents the arrival of the Christian faith in America 500 years ago with the first baptisms of two Mayas, Melchor and Julian, at Boca Iglesia. It includes the figure of Spaniard Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba and three banners representing images of the Virgin Mary: Our Lady of Los Remedios, the Virgin of Asuncion, and Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. The first was honored at the consecration of the Hispanic Convent at Boca Iglesia, the second was the image that was brought to Isla Mujeres in 1911, and Father Palau then advised the organizers that it was actually Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, who is honored at the end of every November through December 8th.
The mural represents history that occurred in the municipality of Isla Mujeres, and on one side is the baptism of the first two Mayan children, while on the west side is the adoration of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, including an image of Monsignor Favio Martínez, bishop of Tuxtla Gutierrez, a favorite son of Isla Mujeres, guiding the faith of the islanders.
The two sides of the painting direct the observer's eyes to the image of Jesus Christ on a large cross which is in the middle. The parish priest Raul Sánchez Alonso has supervised the work and said the name of the fishing boat that brought the image of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception from Boca Iglesia to Isla Mujeres was named "Venus", whose crew was Cristino Avila, Pablo Xool and Cardos; and Venus is the planet that the Mayas worshiped at Punta Sur, the goddess Ixchel. It is the morning star, of good news.
The improvements were done with an investment of about 800,000 pesos, which was contributed by companies, institutions, and former mayors, and the celebrations will take place on May 19 and 20th.

The CONAGUA forecast said the effects of cold front number 46 could bring rain to the Yucatan Peninsula on Saturday and Sunday (We are still having sunny weather at 2pm on Saturday).
Small boats were restricted but boats over 40 feet were allowed to go to Isla Contoy. Tourists were arriving and enjoying the island's attractions, and it is noted that tourism is stable but decreased, and expected to improve with whale shark tour season later this month. Occupancy is low at the small hotels and about 70 percent at the larger properties.

Work continues on the doubling of the capacity of the wastewater treatment plant at Punta Sur, with an investment of 50 million pesos, and the project is expected to be completed and operational in 2018. This project was begun in 2013 and is now in its fourth stage.
In response to questions about water pressure in some areas, local Aguakan manager Jose Pinzon Sarabia said the service is guaranteed 24 hours, and there is good pressure everywhere. He acknowledges that at high points the water cannot ascend up to the rooftop tinacos, and therefore they recommend underground cisterns so that each user can access the supply without problems, although the great majority of the tinacos are on the rooftops and can by filled by using a pump.
Regarding reports of spills or requests about consumption, the Aguakan website now has an application that can be installed on smart phones so users can track their consumption by simply entering the data from their meter, as well as payment information and service requests. It also has the option of uploading any spills of tap water or wastewater, so that personnel can respond to the problem. He said, "We try to give immediate attention to every citizen who requests our help."

This event has been held eight times in Isla Mujeres and once in Playa del Carmen, with the goal of raising awareness among students about water use and conservation, as well as promoting environmental education. This year the event will focus on teaching them about the history of the water supplies in towns of Quintana Roo. There will be 80 participants, who will be given books about this subject, which explain how the inhabitants of Isla Mujeres obtained rainwater from a cistern at the airfield and from the use of wells.
The event takes place on Friday, May 19, starting at Playa Centro at 2pm and ending at the same location at 10pm. The young people are in teams of four people, with two teams from Solidaridad and two from Puerto Morelos, and three teams from Isla Mujeres and the rest are from Benito Juarez (Cancun.)
The participants include students from: Colegio Nacional de Educación Profesional Técnica (Conalep), Colegio del Caribe, Centro Universitario Anglo Mexicano (CUAM), Universidad del Caribe, and Universidad Anáhuac, among others. They will participate in various tests that will challenge their physical and intellectual abilities, as well as having the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge about the processes through which water passes before and after arriving at our homes. The goal of these activities is to raise awareness about the importance of the vital liquid.

Wednesday, May 3 and Thursday, May 4, the Eta Aquarid meteor shower can be seen, but it peaks in the predawn hours of Friday and Saturday. It is caused by debris from Halley's Comet. The most meteors can be seen during the hours before 5a, when dawn starts (After moonset which is 1:33a on Wed, 2:18a on Thur., 3:00a on Fri, and 3:49 on Sat).
