Dance troupes delight audience at Noches Magicas event
Local families and tourists enjoyed the performances on Sunday night for Noches Magicas by the dance troupe "Entorno" from the island and the troupe "Innova Dance" from Cancun. The lively and colorful choreography on the Town Square was enjoyed by the dozens of people. These cultural events are offered on Sunday evenings by the City as part of the Mayor's commitment to supporting culture and art.
City gives recognition to exceptional baseball player
Outstanding Isla Mujeres baseball player Jose Juan Arroyo, aka "La Bala" was given recognition for his skills at the "El Pescador" baseball stadium where fans were gathered to watch the "Pescadores of Isla Mujeres" play the "Bravos of Chemax". The manager of the island team, José Balbino León Paredes, spoke about the athlete's outstanding participation since he began playing in the children's league.
He was recognized for his outstanding participation in the State Baseball League, "Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez". The City General Secretary, Joel Saury Galue, represented the Mayor, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, giving recognition to the exceptional baseball player, and said this administration is committed to supporting sports and athletes and encouraging them to excel.

The dolphin rescued in Isla Mujeres remains in a delicate state of health

The juvenile dolphin that was rescued last Tuesday from the Caribbean Sea near Isla Mujeres is still in a delicate state of health, although doctors say he shows slight improvement. The veterinarians of Dolphin Discovery are taking care of the animal in the pens at Tortugranja. Roberto Sánchez Okrucry, head of veterinarians at Dolphin Discovery, commented that he is improving little by little, however, he does not want to try food. They are feeding him medically and hope to get him to eat on his own, which is necessary before he can be released.
Since the rescue, veterinarians have performed various medical studies and tests, looking for the origin of the infection which is causing him to continue to be ill. Dr. Sanchez said that on Monday they will do new medical studies to see if the situation has improved regarding the infection.
Cahuameros lost the final to the Dorados of Playa del Carmen

The Cahuameros of Isla Mujeres Nueva Generación took second place in the Major Basketball League of Quintana Roo final tournament, and the winners are the Dorados of Playa del Carmen, who were victorious on their home court Saturday with a score of 67 to 58.

National literary contest

A national invitation has been announced for a contest with prose and poetry categories, including the general public (adults) and military personnel (active or retired). It is the "XXXI Contest Poetry and Prose Timon de Oro", and will be held October 15 to 20th.
The Association of the Heroic Naval Military School, AC, in collaboration with the Secretary of Culture of Campeche, said, "We are pleased to invite our partners, as well as the general public and in particular the citizens of Campeche, to participate."
The works must be original and requirements are given about format,length, how to submit, etc. Participants will have a separate pseudonym from their name and contact information, which are required, and their actual names will be announced after the judging, on the Military school's website. The first three places will receive a certificate of award and a medal, and respectively, 15,000 pesos, 10,000 pesos, and 5000 pesos.
Encouraging family unity and healthy lifestyles

Fernando Velazquez Celis spoke about the children's fishing tournament they have held for 20 years and the importance of family traditions. He said, "It is necessary to preserve our traditions and it is the responsibility of each family to carry them out. I am going to continue this tradition until the last moment of my life."
About one thousand people participated on April 30, Children's Day, between adults and children, in the children's fishing tournament with lines from the family pier. This year there was also a contest of hand made boats, which included a catamaran made from a 'machete' and bark from a coconut tree, as well as a wooden boat. Sr. Velazquez said that the artisan works made by his brothers and their children, his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren will be permanently displayed on the roof of the palapa of his restaurant located on the Rueda Medina malecon, so that visitors can see the result of the family's efforts.
Tourists coming to the restaurant during the festivities were given a family welcome and many joined the party. The family has become dispersed and the tournament fosters family unity, drawing members from Cozumel, Holbox, and other parts of the region.

May 7 The winds from the south-southeast are expected to continue until next weekend, according to the forecasts of the SCT (Ministry of Communications & Transport) and CONAGUA (National Water Commission).
The Whale Shark licensees are ready to start offering tours in just over a week, according to the scheduled opening, but no announcement has been made by SEMARNAT. (Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.)
Tourism with normal with many Mexican families arriving via ferry, as well as foreign tourists, from Puerto Juarez, the Hotel Zone, and Punta Sam, with the first two operating at about 50%. The beaches were partly full, and the buoy line at Playa Centro was now cleared from the beach since a good amount of sand was removed by the action of the southern winds. It has become one of the more popular areas because of the sizes of the beaches.

The fishermen friends of Carlos Garcia Castilla, Valvula, sang, cried, and expressed their pain on the beach of the cooperative "Caribe" when his body returned from Cancun, where he had passed away. On Sunday morning he was buried in the downtown cemetery, where is family and friends wished him eternal rest, after a lifetime in this place where he was born, grew up, and became an adult. He had trained himself to free dive beyond 15 meters to spearfish. He was known for his ability to catch and tow large fish to sell, and no one was better at catching grouper than him.
He learned by trial and error, just as he did when he made his first snorkel as a young man. Due to the economic circumstances of his large family, money was not available to buy snorkeling equipment.
He dove into deeper and deeper waters, which led him to find the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks in the early 1960's when the tourism industry was just beginning in Isla Mujeres, and the first luxury hotel opened its doors in 1964.
A Mass was said at the church, and then his casket was taken to the cemetery for burial, and an emotional goodby. One fisherman said the Valvula's friend Ramon Bravo was awaiting him with open arms, in heaven.
Descanse en paz, señor “Válvula”, Rest in Peace.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Wednesday, May 3 and Thursday, May 4, the Eta Aquarid meteor shower can be seen, but it peaks in the predawn hours of Friday and Saturday. It is caused by debris from Halley's Comet. The most meteors can be seen during the hours before 5a, when dawn starts (After moonset which is 1:33a on Wed, 2:18a on Thur., 3:00a on Fri, and 3:49 on Sat).
