REHABILITATING PARKS AND RECREATIONAL AREAS OF ISLA MUJERES· The municipal government continues to work to provide clean and safe spaces for island familiesOne of the major commitments of the City of Isla Mujeres, headed by the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, is to take care of the families of the island, so from the beginning of the current administration he has worked on the rehabilitation of recreational spaces. One which stands out is the park "The Hormiguitas Obreras". The mayor commented: "There are many obligations and demands that we have as parents, especially when we both work, and this means that sometimes we don't have a great deal of time to dedicate to our children, so I am committed to providing safe spaces where islanders can spend time with their families. Juan Carrillo Soberanis also mentioned that this has been possible thanks to the actions implemented by the municipal government through the coordinated work of the different agencies involved and the support of the citizens, who on several occasions have assisted in cleaning up these areas, together with the authorities. The municipal president invited all the families of Isla Mujeres to practice some sport in the rehabilitated spaces, to make good use of them, to keep them clean and to report any inappropriate use of them; because although the City departments continue to carry out campaigns of attention for the parks, sports fields and public spaces in general, the support of the islanders is essential. "Dedicating quality time to our children is not only good for them, because it offers beneficial advantages, such as promoting learning and family communication. Therefore, I pledge that this administration will continue working on the rehabilitation of more recreational areas in Isla Mujeres, for the healthy coexistence of the families of the municipality, "concluded Juan Carrillo Soberanis.

LIGHTING CEREMONY FOR THE WORLD DAY OF DOWN SYNDROME AND AUTISM• The City of Isla Mujeres seeks to raise awareness and educate the island's residents about both disorders.(Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, April 3, 2017) .- With excellent citizen participation, the municipal government of Isla Mujeres, headed by the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, through the National System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF), led by his wife, Paola Orrico de Carrillo, carried out a ceremonial lighting of lights event in commemoration of the World Day of Down Syndrome and Autism on the Town Square in front of the Palacio Municipal. Before the lighting ceremony, there was a walk from the Monument to the Fisherman on Rueda Medina avenue which concluded on the Square in front of the Town Hall, where the honorary president of the DIF, Paola Orrico de Carrillo, thanked the authorities who attended the event and she urged the residents of Isla Mujeres to work hand in hand with the agencies for strategies that allow those with Down syndrome or autism to participate and to develop in a better way within their environments. "I am very grateful to those who provided their support to carry out this event. Thank you to the community, the parents and the Associations ‘Amor por la Niñez’ and ‘Corazón de Wilito’ ('Love for Children' and 'Heart of Wilito') for their participation, "said Paola Orrico de Carrillo.
The president of the Amor por la Niñez Aassociation, María Eugenia González Herrera, invited the islanders to be inclusive and set aside prejudices, saying that the only way to support them is by "putting themselves in their shoes " and to not label them. The event was attended by the general secretary of the City Council, Joel Saury Galué, on behalf of the Mayor, and participants were dressed in blue t-shirts, blue bows and carrying blue balloons, symbolizing awareness of autism. Also attending were the general director of the Municipal DIF social service agency, Hilda Christina Gómez Ávila; municipal trustee, Suemi Beatriz González Sánchez; and the coordinator of the municipal CRIM, Jessica Contreras Gómez. The Palacio Municipal was decorated with a blue bow, which will decorate the Town Hall throughout the month of April.·

This article says there's a rumor ("unofficial versions") that the resident rate could be 20 pesos one way and 40 pesos round trip on the Barcos Caribe ferry...if/when they get approved. (See yesterday's blog for the translation-summary of the TVIM article about two companies who want to offer service between Isla Mujeres & P. Juarez, starting this month, pending governmental approval.)

Limiting swimming with the whale sharks

More than 300 permit holders from Isla Mujeres, Holbox and Cancun have begun procedures for the upcoming whale shark season, which starts in mid May with some modifications resulting from the creation of the Reserva de la Biosfera del Caribe Mexicano. (The Biosphere Reserve of the Mexican Caribbean)
Starting with this 2017 season, the surveillance and operations in both the areas "Aguas Verdes" and "Aguas Azules" (Green Water and Blue Water) will be the responsibility of CONANP, while the Department of Wildlife will be in charge of issuing the permits. Previously, the Wildlife Department was in charge of monitoring the area known as "Aguas Azules", and CONANP had exclusive jurisdiction over the Reserva del Tiburon Ballena (Whale Shark Reserve), known as "Aguas Verdes".
There has also been a change in the guidelines for the tours, because in the past there would be just a couple unlucky whale sharks who were being harassed by tourists from all the nearby boats, which sometimes could total more than 50 people, including the tourists and the guides.
This season, when there are few whale sharks and many boats, the tours will be limited to observing the animals. The travel agencies and marinas will be advised to sell the tours as "observing the whale sharks with the possibility of swimming with them", such as when many of them are found, which occurs at the peak of the season, when as many as 200 whale sharks gather in one group.
Another modification is that in addition to obtaining the whale shark permit from the Wildlife Department, a request must also be submitted to work in the area of the Reserva de la Biosfera del Caribe Mexicano (The Biosphere Reserve of the Mexican Caribbean) with a copy of their permit from the previous season.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Within ten minutes walk are the restaurants Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, Manolitos, Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, and the large department store-grocery Chedraui. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Attend Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk downtown.

Amar Cocina Peruana Restaurant is on the back street Guerrero, just north of Abasolo & the Cultural Center, on the west side of the street. Sergio's impressive batik art can be seen, and purchased, at the Thursday Artist Fairs. He also does murals & sign painting. We love the mural he painted for us! His are will be featured and for sale at the restaurant all month.
