Work continues on the renovation of the storm drain covers in downtoan Isla Mujeres, along the northern section of Guerrero avenue. It is noted that two months ago, maintenance was done on the absorption well at the municipal Mercado on that street.  There has been some inconvenience to traffic, which they are trying to minimize by doing one section at a time. This is part of a project for maintenance on the whole system of rainwater drainage, downtown and in the colonias, including the absorption wells.

Irresponsible animal cruelty persists
Persiste crueldad irresponsable .. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
Eight cases of animal cruelty have been treated in January in Isla Mujeres, said veterinarian Delfino Guevara. He is about to attend an international meeting of animal welfare proponents, to be held in Los Angeles California February 6-10. Issues include problems in the poor regions of the world, where Mexico forms a large part of Latin America, and includes Asian and African countries, where the poor do not have the privilege of caring and protecting pets, according to world standards about medical care.
This year the central them is tigers, and last year it was elephants, but within the agenda are the issues of domestic dogs and cats. Although there are already laws in place for the care and protection of these pets, they are often not applied, as happens in Quintana Roo, and obviously in Isla Mujeres         Because of his work at raising community awareness in Isla Mujeres for 18 years, Dr. Delfino has been invited by the IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) to lead a meeting of specialists
At the animal hospital headed by Dr. Delfino, there is a young dog that was left at the doors of the Catholic Church in la Gloria, who is blind because of a massive tick infestation. It is being rehabilitated and they are seeking an adoptive family so it can have a healthy, happy life, despite its current limitations. There is a black cat that cannot walk because its back legs don't function, and they are seeking options so it can be autonomous. There is a young puppy that was abandoned in the street, and another that was rescued after being run over.
When he was asked 2017 is starting out, the veterinarian said "The abandonment of animals is increasing. In January we had eight animals, of which several have been adopted, including some outside the country. They all had owners, who irresponsibly left them in the street. "           That is why he again urged the municipal authorities to apply the laws in this matter, as well as urging  the volunteer groups also reactivate their efforts to address the same goal of promoting a culture of protection and care of pets.
Information is given about the IFAW from their website, which is HERE in English.

More traffic & fewer parking spaces
Víalidades insulares no alcanzan. [+] Ver masFull article at this link
During this winter holiday season with thousands of tourists visiting daily, who enjoy touring the island in golf carts and other vehicles, traffic has become chaotic, especially in areas where the volume of traffic is high and the streets are narrow, causing more accidents. The majority of accidents occur at these spots, where various vehicles suffer minor damages, including golf carts, taxis, scooters, and others. There are several minor injuries every week, and fractures of feet at times, according to employees of the dozen or so rental agencies for golf carts and scooters.
All the parked vehicles complicate the traffic congestion downtown, and there are not enough spaces to handle the growing number of cars. This is complicated by many of the rental agencies who park a half dozen carts in the street, who are not being regulated and should be limited to only two at a time in the street.
There is parking at the Casa de Cultura for more than a dozen compact vehicles and scooters. Some residents have been asking that the space formerly occupied by the General Hospital be turned into a parking lot, which would be about 8000 square meters. According to a report last year, there was consideration by the state government to sell this for private use, but consideration could be given to using it to meet this pressing need on the island.
