Last weekend the Ultramar ferry company formalized the collection of fees for the transport of cargo items between Gran Puerto and Isla Mujeres, in addition to the 25 kilos of cargo for each passenger that is included in the cost of each ticket. This charge began long ago, but it has been at their discretion. Now a sign has been posted that sets the rate for each item, ranging from a gallon of paint to refrigerators and mattresses, while there is no charge for some items. There have been complaints on social networks, in addition to ongoing allegations about mistreatment from some Ultramar staff, who are said to give priority to national and foreign tourists, over residents.

The port remained opened to all navigation and as of 5pm (Monday) the Harbor Master had said that the decision to authorize departures of whale shark tours the following day would be made three hours later. At that time there were no problems, however the SCT weather forecast at 4pm included advisories that small craft not sail in the Yucatan Channel due to effects of Tropical Storm #9, which was affecting western Cuba. It rained briefly on the island after 3pm, but it only lasted a few minutes. Although the skies were cloudy, the winds were not strong at 5:20pm.

The nautical community is pleased with the project recently announced by the administrators of the National Marine Park (Parque Marino Nacional Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc) to submerge sculptures in the area of El Meco, in order to reduce the number of tourists visiting El Farito daily. (El Meco is a coastal Mayan ruin along the road between P. Juarez and P. Sam.)
There have been articles published in Por Esto regarding concerns about risks associated with the large numbers of tourists who are visiting El Farito, as well as the coral areas of Manchones, MUSA, the Cross in the Bay, and Sac Bajo, among others. Conscientious tour providers are asking that a capacity be adhered to for each area in order to avoid damaging the ecosystems and to prevent accidents to the tourists.
In response, administrators for the Marine Reserve Management Plan are considering these issues, and have developed a plan to submerge new sculptures near El Meco, based on the success of MUSA, and backed by federal environmental authorities.
The Director of the National Marine park, Jaime Gonzalez Cano, will soon participate in an international meeting to be held in Australia, where he will share technological expertise regarding artificial reefs and underwater sculptures. These successful programs will be exported to that country, as well as the US, South Africa, Colombia, Brazil, Dominican Republic, and others.
He said over the past 20 years, several projects have been developed with very good results, and MUSA is a fine example of the development of a community based, subsidized, sustainable conservation project. Interest in adopting these measures has been expressed from various parts of the world among concerned environmentalists.
Death of pioneer of fishing cooperative

Aug. 29 Sunday night, Buenaventura Delgado Díaz “Coleguita” died of natural causes at the age of 99, in his wooden home on Juarez Avenue, at the corner of Matamoras. Hundreds of members of local families offered condolences and shared memories in person and on social networks. He is remembered for is role in founding the first fishing cooperative in Quintana Roo in 1957, when he was the first president of "Caribe". He was given recognition for his role in founding the cooperative, as well as for being a descendant of the founders of this community, and he was personally given an award by Governor Borge.
His wife, Rita Decasia Gomez Coral, passed away some years ago, and they had four children, Thelma, Concepción, Buenaventura and Candelaria. As of last year, they had 22 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. On social media, his friends wrote of his career as a fishermen, his talkativeness, wonderful anecdotes, and tremendous energy. Although his health declined in his last year, he celebrated his 99th birthday on July 14th, cutting his cake and sharing it in his home with his descendants, under the watchful care of his daughter.
While there are many stories to remember about his adventures in fishing, ranging from Isla Contoy to the Florida Keys; one memory that stands out is from May 10, 2003 when he and his son-in-law caught a rare variety of shark, a 'milk shark'.(“tiburón leche / tiburón peregrino") which weighed over a ton. He began working when he was very young, and retired nearly a decade ago, after dedicating his life to fishing for nearly eight decades.
The funeral Mass was scheduled to being at 5:30 at the Immaculate Conception Church, followed by the burial at the downtown municipal cemetery, under the effects of Tropical Depression #9. Condolences to his entire extended family, descendants of the founders of Isla Mujeres.
Damaged drain grates not part of Aguakan network

Complaints were recently published in Por Esto regarding two broken storm drain grates in colonia La Gloria, which has caused water to pool when it rains, which could be potential mosquito breeding grounds. The local manager of Aguacan explained that this is not part of the company's network. Therefore residents await a response from the City.
Rain began to fall shortly after 3pm due to effects from Tropical Depression #9 which was over the western part of Cuba moving toward Florida, according to the NOAA forecast. The rain did not last very long, but was enough to cool down the afternoon temperature and to cause puddles in the usual spots.
