An invitation to participate in the 4th Lion Fish Gastronomic Contest. It says it will take place on the town square on Friday, August 26 at 7pm. If you're wondering where to dine on Lion Fish...Peter, owner of Asia Caribe (on Hidalgo) said they feature it regularly on their menu....and won last year.

The Citizen Merit award was given to Mario Burgos Sánchez, who was a boat carpenter, whose work is well known in the community. The Tourism Merit award was given to Ignacio Acosta Casanov, whose has given the island his best efforts, and worked for over two decades assuring that tourists feel welcome at the iconic Posada del Mar Hotel. The winner of the Women's Fishing Tournament was Liliana Saqui Rodríguez, which took place June 24 & 25.
Following the Formal Session of City Council, Angela Aguilar Trejo was crowned as embajadora (ambassador) of the Festivities for the 166th Anniversary of the Founding of Isla Mujeres.
Since the day it was submerged in 1994, the Cross in the Bay has been an icon in the history of Isla Mujeres and each year we offer a wreath to remember its presence and significance, and to ask for blessings and good wishes for everyone. 166 ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF ISLA MUJERES.

The wall around the recreational area for Senior Citizens collapsed during heavy rains a year ago, which was two meters high and about 50 meters long. Now there is controversy over the large amount of money which has been allocated, and whether it is just for the fence, or for more construction. The weekend before the work began, a banner was posted saying “Ayuntamiento de Isla Mujeres, Parque del Adulto Mayor, rehabilitación y construcción; Isla Mujeres. $850,000.00”. (City of Isla Mujeres, Senior Citizen's Park, Rehabilitation and Construction: Isla Mujeres $850,000 pesos).

Catholics commemorated the 22nd anniversary of the submerging of the Cross in the Bay during a procession on land and sea, with a mass on the surface of the water, above the three meter tall cross, and the offering of a floral wreath.
At 9am, the procession went from the Church of Immaculate Conception, down Rueda Medina avenue, and to the dock of the car ferry, where they boarded the "Sergio Aguilar Gracia". They traveled to the area near Los Manchones and celebrated a Mass. They returned to shore at noon. This is the second year this has been done in this manner. The event was witnessed by young people and adults participating in the 166th anniversary of the founding of Isla Mujeres, as well as dozens of tourists, and an official delegation.
The Cross was installed August 17, 1994 by Ramon Bravo Prieto, who is a famous documentarian of nature and conservationist, with help and good will from the community and the country, during the commemoration of the 144th anniversary of the founding of Isla Mujeres. Two years after its installation, the Cross had to be removed, rebuilt, and strengthened after being damaged by hurricanes Opal and Roxan.
There have been many visiting couples married at the site of Cross. The local priest, Raul Sanchez Alonso, said he would like to experience that, but he does not know how to dive with tanks, so a colleague has attended that responsibility. In addition to having religious significance, this tourist attraction is also ecologically beneficial, because its presence has reduced the number of tourists who visit the reefs, and have impact upon them.
Complaints about neglected empty lots

Some residents want City officials to enforce regulations requiring property owners to cut weeds and clean up their neglected vacant lots. Neighbors are concerned that the lots can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes, roaches, scorpions, toads, spiders, snakes, and other animals which can endanger children, especially newborns.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Our guests recommend the Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants.

One of the performers for Isla Fest is Astrid Hadad, who sports some amazing costumes in her performances. Her Wikipedia page says" ...no one since has stuffed all of Mexican political and cultural history into a dress and laced it up with a feminist attitude quite like Ms. Hadad. In a way, one could say that Hadad’s wild cabaret is a little like a Frida Kahlo painting come to life. Like Frida, she draws from the rich motherlode of images offered up by Mexican history and culture: Catholic saints, Aztec and Mayan iconography, revolutionary heroes, exuberant flowers and plants, campesino and indigenous folk art, the golden era of Mexican cinema and so on. Hadad has absorbed this inheritance of a uniquely Mexican and female surrealism and created her own surrealist cabaret that pulses with campy humor and irony."
