The municipal Department of Tourism has requested increased police surveillance until dawn on Hidalgo Avenue, where the most night life occurs on the island. There has been no violence in recent weeks, but there were previous incidents involving a manager of a business and a youth from Cancun. The Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozco, said these events must not be repeated because it damages the reputation of the island.
He said during the holiday period there have been no complaints about poor service. He said they intervene directly to facilitate solutions to problems, and have intervened in five cases when credit cards were used at various establishments.
Regarding a proposal to install a network of cameras, which was suggested six years ago, this has been postponed and perhaps it will be considered in the final days of this administration or perhaps by the next government.

Tropical waves cause strong winds

A tropical wave affecting the Yucatan Peninsula could cause increased winds and waves tonight and early Sunday according to forecasts from the SCT (Ministry of Communications and Transport). Effects were felt during the day, but the port was not closed for small boats. Some whale shark tour operators said there were several seasick tourists due to the increased waves, but there were no other consequences. This is not a new problem and at other times there have previously been complaints of back pain, with many visitors unaccustomed to the sudden movements that can occur in small boats because of the waves. On the island, there was some rain at 11am, when the first effects of the storm were felt.

On Saturday, the Harbor Master cancelled whale shark tours by boats under 40 feet for Sunday, due to effects of a tropical wave that may cause waves over 2 meters high and gusting winds. This decision affects around 100 boats. Boats over 40 feet may be allowed to make trips to Isla Contoy.
The storms effects began on and around the island before noon on Saturday, and shortly after 4pm the Harbor Master reported there had been no incidents or accidents.
These restrictions apply only to open water, and recreation and tours in the bay will be allowed, allowing the trimarans, catamarans, and small and medium boats to move people around the Bay on Sunday, when more than 8000 people are expected to be transported thru the two Maritime Terminals of APIQRoo (Port Authority of Quintana Roo). (It has been raining steadily all Sunday morning, which probably drastically reduced the number of people visiting for the day.)
Sermon about problems among young people

In his sermon, Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo, monsignor of the Cancún-Chetumal parishes, spoke about the problems of youth, advising against use of marijuana and plans to legalize it. He advised following the Catholic faith and teachings of Jesus Christ. He spoke following the boat procession of the Congreso Eucarístico Decanatal from Punta Sam on Friday, which included over 1200 participants from the parishes of Benito Juarez and Lazaro Cardenas.

Trash collection problem

It was thought that this problem had been overcome downtown, and tourism service providers are concerned about the effect on the image of the island when trash piles up or is strewn on the ground. The problems are attributed to the lack of maintenance and renovation to the trash vehicles, and it is noted that 40 tonnes of trash are generated daily, and there are ongoing problems with it accumulating at the Trash Transfer Facility. Recently a large truck increased the transport of waste to the regional landfill on the mainland and reduced the accumulation of trash. However in this season, a large amount of foliage has accumulated and with the heat there is risk of a fire, which occurred last year and annoyed the neighbors with smoke for more than a week.

At 4:30pm a large boat procession from Punta Sam transported more than 1200 Catholics from 20 parishes in Benito Juarez and Lazaro Cardenas, who are participating in the Congreso Eucarístico Decanatal. More than 2500 Catholics gathered in front of the Immaculate Conception church for a Mass officiated by Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cardenas, Bishop of Cancún-Chetumal Prelature, for the occasion of International Youth Day. They came to the island aboard cargo-passenger boat "Sergio Gracia Aguilar", with the trip taking half an hour, and there were 30 detonations announcing their docking at the concrete pier of APIQRoo (Quintana Roo Port Authority).
They were met by hundreds of adults and young people dressed in white, and they walked together along Rueda Medina, with the vehicle of Cristo Ecaristico. It was a multicolored procession, with each delegation in their colors. The procession lasting half an hour. Traffic for tourism was detoured to Juarez avenue while the main street was saturated for several minutes, and traffic resumed after they passed from Rueda Medina. They proceeded to Morelos Avenue, and the Mass began at 6pm in front of the Church.
Their journey back and forth across the bay was attractive, with wonderful scenery, especially the evening return at about 8pm, under a moon illuminating the Bay.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Our guests recommend the Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants.

One of the performers for Isla Fest is Astrid Hadad, who sports some amazing costumes in her performances. Her Wikipedia page says" ...no one since has stuffed all of Mexican political and cultural history into a dress and laced it up with a feminist attitude quite like Ms. Hadad. In a way, one could say that Hadad’s wild cabaret is a little like a Frida Kahlo painting come to life. Like Frida, she draws from the rich motherlode of images offered up by Mexican history and culture: Catholic saints, Aztec and Mayan iconography, revolutionary heroes, exuberant flowers and plants, campesino and indigenous folk art, the golden era of Mexican cinema and so on. Hadad has absorbed this inheritance of a uniquely Mexican and female surrealism and created her own surrealist cabaret that pulses with campy humor and irony."
