Promptly cleaning away the unusual amount of seaweed from North Beach
LIMPIEZA INMEDIATA EN PLAYA NORTE ANTE LA PRESENCIA INUSUAL DE SARGAZO.
Due to changes in ocean currents caused by Hurricane Earl in the Caribbean Sea, a surprising amount of sargazo seaweed made landfall on one area of North Beach, prompting an immediate deployment of crews to remove it from this important touristic recreational area. Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez provided coordination, participation, and training for the cleaning tasks, including respect for the environment and the official regulations in this sensitive area. Those who helped with the task included City Directors, Department Managers, general staff, and volunteers.
Due to the unusual and excessive amount of the seaweed and the damage it causes to the environmental and tourism image, its removal was begun with the utmost care not to damage the beach, and to properly dispose of this excess organic matter, that is a result of Hurricane Earl passing near the area.
The seaweed is being taken to the Trash Transfer Facility, to the areas of the old sascaberra (sascab quarry), where it will biodegrade naturally. The Mayor thanked all the participants for their commitment and dedication for this extended day of cleaning, demonstrating the unity and solidarity, saying, "This is a trait that distinguishes the islanders and and allows us to move forward in any adverse situation."
Note...most of Playa Norte wasn't affected, but a great deal landed in this one section of beach.
Many locals and tourists are visiting our beaches this weekend.

Differing prices for whale shark tours

Five years ago, the price was set for whale shark tours at $120usd per person, and with some agencies selling them for less, this means the boat owners are paid less. A travel agency that recently opened on the island is offering the tours for only $75, which is only ~1400 pesos, and this means the boat owners will be paid much less than that. There are also agents around the island offering tours for less than 1000 pesos.
The agency "Sayvin" offers the following prices: trips to Chichén Itzá, at 39 dollars; whale shark tours at 75; Xcaret, 130; Xel-ha, 99; Xplor, 134; snorkel + MUSA, 30; and a flight a Cuba at 230 dollars.
One of the licensees said, "Our costs for boats and equipment are paid in dollars, and the price of fuel has steadily increased, so in theory the rate agreed upon several years ago should have been increased to $150, rather than decreased. This has got to stop."
There are more than 100 licensees in Isla Mujeres, and one of them said, "We are divided among ourselves, and some of us have boycotted the set rate, to acquire customers which were being won by those charging less. We know that some agents sell the tours for $150 or even $200, but for the boat owner the situation is different & we must haggle for our work."

Aug. 6 Today the Harbor Master authorized boats over 40 feet to take tourists to Isla Contoy, after a few days of restrictions due to the storm "Earl".

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Our guests recommend the Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants.

One of the performers for Isla Fest is Astrid Hadad, who sports some amazing costumes in her performances. Her Wikipedia page says" ...no one since has stuffed all of Mexican political and cultural history into a dress and laced it up with a feminist attitude quite like Ms. Hadad. In a way, one could say that Hadad’s wild cabaret is a little like a Frida Kahlo painting come to life. Like Frida, she draws from the rich motherlode of images offered up by Mexican history and culture: Catholic saints, Aztec and Mayan iconography, revolutionary heroes, exuberant flowers and plants, campesino and indigenous folk art, the golden era of Mexican cinema and so on. Hadad has absorbed this inheritance of a uniquely Mexican and female surrealism and created her own surrealist cabaret that pulses with campy humor and irony."
