Staff from the municipal Department of Tourism reported that seven Food Trucks will arrive in a caravan from Merida as part of the festivities celebrating the 166th anniversary of the founding of Isla Mujeres. They will remain on the island for 11 days, Aug. 10-21. This gastronomic exchange is called the “Caravana Peninsular Mérida-Isla Mujeres", with participants from the Food Truck Park Las Haciendas, in Mérida, Yucatán.

Aug. 7. On Saturday, a family from Merida came to the island from Cancun with a large tour group to spend the day, but it ended tragically when the body of Daniel Martin Acosta, 78, was found Sunday morning near the pier of a fishing cooperative. The septuagenarian, who had Alzheimer's disease, went missing from the Maritime Terminal, where the hundreds of people waiting to return to the mainland, made searching more difficult.
The Yucatecan family had arrived in Cancun on Friday, where they were staying at the Hotel Perla Caribe. On Saturday, they came to Isla Mujeres, arriving before 9am, and planning to return to Cancun at 4pm, following a tour of the island and visiting the beach. Someone close to the family explained that Sr. Acosta usually stays near his wife, but he got up from his seat, and then they couldn't find him. In the evening (ya al anochecer) they contacted the police, when he was officially considered lost. Part of the family stayed on the island until the last ferry at midnight, in case he may have gotten onto one of the boats, although that is very controlled.
It is theorized that he may have gone south along Rueda Medina, perhaps entering the beach area where there is vacant property, near the street by the Middle School, by Pescadores street, and perhaps in the night he entered the property of the Patria & Progreso fishing cooperative and went out on the pier, walking some 50 meters, and slipped off the left side, drowning where the water is a meter deep and there is deep mud.
His body was found shortly before 7am, floating a few meters from the pier near an area of mangroves, wearing dark pants, a white shirt, and dark shoes. The authorities notified his family, who include his wife, Maria Victoria Tun. The Ministerial authorities initiated their processes for having the body identified and transferred to SEMEFO, Forensic Medical Service, in Cancun. A Cancun funeral agency took charge of the body, and the family was making arrangements to return to Merida. The prosecutor (Public Ministry) declined to comment, saying they have new rules to follow, and any errors can have legal consequences.
The Isla Mujeres police chief said the event was regrettable and the police had been involved in the search since last evening, but since the body was found, the office of the Public Ministry is in charge of the case.
Swimming with the whale sharks remained restricted on Sunday

On Sunday, tours to the whale shark area remained restricted due to choppy seas, but at 3pm, the Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil, removed the restriction against small boats going into the open seas. Therefore, the tours should be allowed to resume on Monday, after nearly a week of inactivity caused by the storm "Earl".
The Harbor Master explained that the whale shark tour boats go out into the open seas about 40-50 kilometers north of Isla Mujeres, and any boat accidents could have serious consequences, if the forecasts are not taken seriously. It has been alleged that several small private boats, including two without permits,went out in violation of the restrictions on Saturday. Many operators had expected to go out on Sunday and had sold tours, but they were required to remain in port.

Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Our guests recommend the Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants.

One of the performers for Isla Fest is Astrid Hadad, who sports some amazing costumes in her performances. Her Wikipedia page says" ...no one since has stuffed all of Mexican political and cultural history into a dress and laced it up with a feminist attitude quite like Ms. Hadad. In a way, one could say that Hadad’s wild cabaret is a little like a Frida Kahlo painting come to life. Like Frida, she draws from the rich motherlode of images offered up by Mexican history and culture: Catholic saints, Aztec and Mayan iconography, revolutionary heroes, exuberant flowers and plants, campesino and indigenous folk art, the golden era of Mexican cinema and so on. Hadad has absorbed this inheritance of a uniquely Mexican and female surrealism and created her own surrealist cabaret that pulses with campy humor and irony."
