North Beach restaurateurs complain about boat selling food

Restaurateurs on Playa Norte are complaining about a boat that is selling food to crews of other boats and to swimmers on weekends. The Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez said that the sale of food or drinks on board vessels is not an issue which is regulated by his office, so they have no authority to restrict it. The Port Authorities monitor that the vessels and their crews have current and correct documents.
The Harbor Master said since the boats are required to stay beyond the buoys, they should not be approaching the beach, and wouldn't be directly affecting the established businesses. He said there are health regulations concerning the sale of products in a Federal Zone which would be under the authority of the Federal Ministry of Finance (Secretaría de Hacienda Federal). The restaurateurs say the boat typically arrives with prepared food, ready to sell, which is damaging their income.

This article notes that school begins in the state of Yucatan on Monday, and the child was peddling to raise money for his education, because he comes from a very poor family. It says the child was crying in response to the warning from the official, who is named in the article and is the son of a former mayor. The woman who posted on social media defended the child, and her post became viral in less than an hour, with many people saying they are familiar with the child, Gabriel. No official response has been given.

In order to properly delineate spaces for vehicles and areas for pedestrians, staff with ZOFEMAT (Department of the Federal Zone) painted the areas along the walkway giving access to North Beach, from Hidalgo Avenue.

There are no tropical waves threatening the coasts of Quintana Roo this weekend, and good weather is expected. Visitors have been taking tours to swim with the whale sharks, and to visit Isla Contoy, whose daily capacity is 200 people. There was a threat of rain shortly after noon, when the wind picked up and momentarily darkened the skies, but nothing happened and the good weather resumed. Fishermen went out to fish and catch lobster, lanchero boats conducted tours in the bay and coastal areas of the island, and tourists were snorkeling and scuba diving.
The municipal Department of Tourism said there were no difficulties on land, with many of the 550 golf cars being rented, as well as many of the 100 scooters which are available for rent. The commercial sector reported that sales have been down since Monday, when the number of visitors fell sharply.

There was a controversy on social networks on Wednesday concerning a 9 year old child, Gabriel, who was selling merchandise on the streets, after an official with the municipal Department of Fiscalization (Enforcement) told him he could end up in jail if he continued selling. The boy is from Chemax, Yucatan, and the post on social media indicated that he sells on the island on weekends and during the summer holidays. It said he gets good grades and wants to continue in schools, in the midst of a difficult situation, since he has six siblings. The post said he sells in order to continue his education, and his mother accompanies him on weekends. Online, several people offered support to help Gabriel find a way to achieve his goals, and many were critical of authorities and want them to allow him to sell. Some were also concerned that this particular official allegedly has been impolite to hawkers before, and they want authorities to address that, also. (There was a photo on FB of a jar of donations being given to the child.)
Increased gas prices affect tortilla manufacturers

A three percent increase in gas prices on August 1st could cause an increase in the price of tortillas. In the past two years, the cost of corn flour has increased 20%, which has been absorbed by local manufacturers, in order to maintain prices.
The small local manufacturers face stiff competition from the franchises, and say they are on the verge of bankruptcy. They have maintained the price of tortillas at 17 pesos per kilo with a wrapper and 16 pesos without, and 12 pesos for a kilo of masa. These prices could increase by a peso by the end of the year.
They say they have also absorbed increased costs of electricity, but this increase cost in transporting the flour has them concerned. They have reduced their consumption of electricity and fuel and reduced the staff to a minimum.
Currently a tonne of flour costs 10,250 pesos while two years ago it was 2000 pesos less, yet they have maintained the same prices. They say the influx of visitors has helped, and without tourism they would be in a worse situation.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Our guests recommend the Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants.
