The Director of Tourism, Gustavo Rodriguez Orozoco, reported that for the second consecutive year, (sic) artists will arrive from all over the world to restore, retouch, and paint new murals at various points around Isla Mujeres. This is part of the "Murals for Oceans" project, and ten to twelve artists are expected to return to Isla Mujeres between July 9th and 23rd to paint murals. They not only paint impressive images, they are also working to raise awareness for conservation of the oceans and the need to protect the whale sharks and manta rays in our region, who visit each year from June to September.
(This is a project of the PangaSeed Foundation, who came to Isla Mujeres in July, 2014. Last year in July, they were painting "Murals for Oceans" in Cozumel. The locations for murals include the Sewage Treatment Plant, at Southern Isla Mujeres, at the Casa de Cultura, and at the Trash Transfer Facility, among other locations. The participating artists in the first project in Isla Mujeres included Curiot, Saner, Shark Toof, Tristan Eaton, Celeste Byers, Meggs, Cinzah Markens, Tatiana Suárez, Hanna Stouffer, Smithe, Aaron Glason, Vexta, Pelucas and Nosego, who are expected to return, among others.

As part of the ongoing activities of Environmental Education, the municipal Department of Ecology installed a photographic exhibition "The Biological Richness of Isla Mujeres at the Middle School, Benito Juarez. The objective is to educate the students about the different species of flora and fauna that are part of our environment.

Su objetivo es dar a conocer los distintos ejemplares de flora y fauna que forman parte de nuestro medio ambiente y de reforzar la Educación Ambiental de la comunidad estudiantil.

Isla Mujeres is the location of the Naval Base for the Fifth Naval Region, who have a National Plan Marina for disasters (natural or man made) to provide protection, including now when there is a risk of powerful hurricanes along the Mexican coastline. The Navy reported about this in an audiovisual presentation they have released, explaining hos the Naval (SEMAR) bases of the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea are ready to activate this program and carry out their mission to prevent, protect, assist, and restore basic services at a local, regional, or national level.
There are thousands of military personnel and fleets of equipment ready to take effective action, as occurred in 1988 when hundreds of residents were evacuated, avoiding being stuck downtown in the early morning hours of September 14th, when the powerful hurricane "Gilberto" arrived. There were no deaths or disappearances on the island when the the streets were flooded.
The SEMAR video explained that with the Plan Marina, the Navy will supply timely assistance to the civilian population in any disaster, which includes activation at local, regional, and national levels for actions of prevention, relief, and recovery. "Prevention is vital, focusing on reducing the destructive effects of natural or man made disasters, when they impact the community. To help people, we will act immediately with support of all resources available to the Navy, assisting with the damage to property and people caused by the event, and helping with recovery; providing assistance in coordination with other agencies to restore the basic services that the community requires."
"The people of Mexico are the most important resource of the country and with the Plan Marina we are ready to provide assistance to them", said the Navy in this video which was distributed on social networks.
Currently, it is hurricane season when powerful storms are expected to occur along the Mexican coasts and especially in the Mexican Caribbean, where there has been disastrous effects from dozens of hurricanes in the past century. Some were more powerful than others, including the aforementioned "Gilberto" and in 2005, "Wilma" caused destruction on the island, which is home to the Naval Base of the Fifth Region of Mexico.

After watching the whale sharks and swimming with them, at a location dozens of miles north of Isla Mujeres, many of the tours visit North Beach before returning to their departure point. Many of the tour operators park their boats offshore from the beach, where they offer a light snack to the tourists, and the visitors enjoy swimming in complete safety, before returning to the Maritime Terminal in Isla Mueres, or to Punta Sam, for those who come from Cancun or the Riviera Maya.
The tour operators report that there has been a large number of whale sharks recently, and at least one group uses a drone to locate the animals; with more than 100 small boats (under 40 feet) with federal permits currently working daily offering this experience.
The weather has been good and there have been no incidents reported. There have been no strong winds causing problems for the boats, nor has the Harbor Master had to impose restrictions on their departure, while monitoring weather conditions daily to avoid any accidents that could place lives at risk at sea.
Other recreational activities were also being enjoyed by thousands of vacationers, including the waters of the two national parks and diving in the nearby locations. Meanwhile, authorities at all three levels of government are ready to provide safety and security measures for the summer vacation season which begins on Saturday, July 16. Large amounts of visitors are expected and officials of the Port Authority are predicting that records will be broken. The main ferry companies and boat transportation providers are ready to operate at maximum capacity to meet the high demand which is expected at the passenger terminals in Puerto Juarez, Punta Sam, and the Cancun Hotel Zone.

The reduced staff at the Post Office Service (SEPOMEX) in Isla Mujeres is generating complaints because there is only one agent to handle the backlog and workload, with a schedule that extends to 12 hours daily. Since the resignation of the second worker, this has been a problem for several months, and so far, no help has been hired. The amount of work at SEPOMEX generally increases with summer vacation season, which is only a week away.
According to the internet, the Post Office hours are 8am to 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 3pm on Saturdays. The reporter could not get information from the SEPOMEX of Quintana Roo phone number at 01800-701-7000. The phone number at the Isla Mujeres office is (01987) 8870085. A committed individual strives to serve the people; and at other times the office has had a half dozen employees to provide service, but now the situation has changed with only one employee working.
While many banks hire private couriers to serve their customers, there are phone bills, packages being shipped, and other deliveries being made by the post office, as needed, despite the availability of social media where photos and videos can be shared, by tourists and others. Some tourists send post cards to their friends, rather than using the internet, according to a visitor who opted to reside for a season in Isla Mujeres, and who regrets what is happening at SEPOMEX and how little interest it takes in the local post office.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Our guests recommend the Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants.

Starting in July, the Artist's Fairs are being scheduled twice a month, on the First and Third Thursdays, at the Casa de Cultura, 4-9.
