An agreement was signed on Monday, June 23 regarding the "comisionistas" who work in the Maritime terminal offering tours, who will be regulated by the Port Authority (API), beginning next week. This applies to the comisionistas who work inside the building and requires that they must be properly dressed and cannot wear flip flops inside the facility. They cannot work inside the terminal every day, and must adhere to a schedule of rotation each week. This schedule corresponds with the schedule for the tour boats, and the days members of each cooperative are allowed to anchor or tie up at the facility, which reportedly has not been respected in the past.

Trash is being dumped in colonia La Gloria near the FOVISSTE building, which creates a bad image for residents and visitors. Trash dumped in this green area includes bathroom 'furniture', coco palms, remnants of a cage, and all sorts of garbage. This is located about 50 meters from the road where hundreds of tourists pass daily to visit Punta Sur, with its ruin and the Open Air Arte Museum there. Residents of the FOVISSTE building & those living in the area are asking that personnel of the Ecology Department take action on this issue before it becomes a public health problem.

Budgetary personnel cuts at federal agencies have resulted in removal of 20 PROFEPA agents in Quintana Roo, while CONANP underwent budget reductions, which causes a lack of fuel for their agents' boats.
The licensees of Isla Mujeres are concerned that large private yachts will be entering the whale shark areas, as they have in past years. They are concerned about the increased demand during peak summer season from Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Holbox, and even Playa del Carmen, which multiplies the number of boats, with no real capacity limits, and areas can become saturated where whale sharks are detected.
The permitees say in past years, passengers of the large yachts have been breaking the rules without impunity, by entering the water without life vests, touching the animals, and 'tossing' small children in the sea without precautions to see the animals up close, who reach out to caress them. The yachters say they can do whatever they want because the sea belongs to everyone.

The port has remained open for general navigation since Monday, and good weather is expected in upcoming days with possible winds of 20-25 kph during the week. Usual nautical activities have been taking place including whale shark tours, trips to Isla Contoy, diving, sport fishing, and commercial fishing.
Hotel occupancy is at 50 percent, and fewer daytime visitors are arriving, which is attributed to low season. Personnel in the municipal Tourism Department expect that hotel occupancy could reach 100 percent during the period between July 15 and August 15.

On Wednesday at 6pm, Isla Mujeres students of the Middle School and High School will attend a talk at the Casa de Cultura about the commitments involved with being a Pueblo Magico; what this distinction represents for this destination; and the benefits it offers.
This designation was granted by the Federal Ministry of Tourism, and offers access to special funds which can be used to improve the town's image, lighting, and other profitable projects which will benefit tourism. This also applies to everything related to culture; that is, the preservation, dissemination, and promotion of the cultural heritage of Isla Mujeres, with projects and programs designed by the municipal Pueblo Magico Committee.
This is intended to increase cultural tourism, which will improve economic flow in general, including hotels, stores, restaurants and diners, bars, and other services offered at this destination.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot.
