Overcharging causes bad impression

Empleados irresponsables de comercios establecidos en la avenida Miguel Hidalgo

ISLA MUJERES, 14 de junio.-
Two Asian tourists purchased three bottles of almond liquor for 2500 pesos at a store on Hidalgo, and then saw the same product being sold in a convenience store for 160 pesos each, so the total for three bottles would be 480 pesos. The tourists complained to the Municipal Tourism Department, but there was little that could be done by staff of the agency, because the prices of alcohol are not regulated, and there is no PROFEPA agency office on the island (Federal Consumer Protection Agency).
The staff of the municipal Tourism Department intervened by asking the business to repay the money to the tourists, but the workers refused. These actions were disapproved of by the municipal Tourism Department and by other business owners, because when tourists are involved in these types of situations which they consider scams, this creates negative opinions about this vacation destination, which can ruin the expensive promotional work being done at national and international levels.

Value of dollar increases
El dólar se va para arriba .. [+] Ver mas Full article & photo at this link
The value of the dollar rose to 17.55 for purchasing and 19 pesos for selling, which is raising the cost of nearly all goods and services. However, many businesses and convenience stores offer much lower exchange rates, not to mention the taxi drivers who only credit 10 pesos per dollar. This encourages them to offer their services to foreigners, and to scorn the islanders, which is a problem that is particularly acute in high season.
Because many of the products sold at restaurants are acquired abroad, many of the establishments have had to adjust their prices to allow them to cover their operating costs. Since the dollar has soared, some restaurants have chosen to put their prices in dollars, which allows them to apply the exchange rate that suits them. PROFECO requires that the exchange rate be posted when menu prices are in dollars. It is remarkable that 'almost no business exhibits the exchange rate in a visible location'. The Director of the municipal Department of Tourism said it is not within his authority to force businesses to display their rate of exchange, but they ask the businesses to do this. It provides security and confidence for the tourists, and is of benefit to the business also.
Since the beginning of 2016, the restaurants have done a good business, even in the months considered to be 'slow'. Despite decreased hotel occupancy, the demand at the restaurants has continued, to the delight of that industry. However, they have not ruled out the possibility of further price adjustments if the dollar continues with unstoppable escalation, since many of their products are imported and becoming more expensive.

Tree damages cars

At 8am, the receptionist at Francis Arlene Hotel was watering plants, when she noticed a Sea Grape tree at the parking lot next door at the Casa de Cultura next door was starting to lean over. She watched as one of the trunks of the tree gradually tilted, emitting a sinister creak as it broke away, until it cracked off almost completely. It landed on the roof of a red car, which was covered with a tarp, while its grape-laden branch fell onto the hood and roof of a blue GMC truck.
She said she was very surprised, because there was no wind. She investigated and found there were no tire tracks near it, so it hadn't been hit by a vehicle or machine from the construction site nearby. She assumed the excessive weight from being loaded down with grapes was the cause.
Workers who arrived at the Casa de Cultura at 9am were surprised to find the tree laying across the damaged cars, especially since there had been no wind or bad weather the night before. At 11am, Civil Protection hadn't yet removed the Sea Grape tree (mata de uva)

Proposal for Mexican-Caribbean Biosphere totally rejected
Total rechazo a la Biosfera del Caribe Mexicano.. [+] Ver masfull article & photo at this link
Total rejection was the response to a proposal for the creation of a Mexican-Caribbean Biosphere, at a meeting attended by fishermen, tourism service providers, landowners,  members of the indigenous community. They said there are no resources to take care of the existing Protected Areas, much less a proposed extension of 5.5 million more hectares.
The meeting was held at the Casa de Cultura and the proposal was presented by the Director of the Isla Contoy National Park, Maria del Carmen Garcia Rivas, and by CONANP.
Tourism service provider Ricardo Gaytán Puerto said the Protected Natural Areas that already exist lack funding and monitoring to adequately enforce regulations and capacity limits. He said SEMARNAT has committed many errors, including allowing the saturation of the whale shark sighting areas and the continual issuance of more permits.

No improvement regarding lack of bus service

The contract with Turicun expired on May 26th, who previously held the concession to provide bus service. A document was offered by Turicun company representatives to the municipal government to extend the contract, which has not been yet been reviewed by the government. Many local residents are weary of supporting the Taxi union, complaining that the drivers prefer to provide service to tourists.
Residents complain about being charged 30 pesos if they fill up a taxi, as well as for being chastised if a family of four, including young children, try to squeeze into the back seat to save being charged that much.
Rosa Salcedo said on Sunday afternoon she had to wait nearly half an hour for a driver to pick her up, because empty taxis would pass by and not stop for her. She said, "Then I found out there was a wedding in Sac Bajo, and they were all going there, like vultures, to give service to tourists. Meanwhile in the colonias, people are piling up, waiting for one to stop. One one hand, the taxistas get angry if there are buses, but when there are no buses, they don't offer the service we need. It appears we are dependent on them, but they are not dependable."
