ISLA MUJERES, 10 de mayo.-
Residents want municipal officials to enforce the trash regulations they have prepared, which provides for sanctions, which have not been imposed yet. They say merchants on Rueda Medina who put out their trash after the collection truck has already passed are acting irresponsibly, and are killing the goose that laid the golden egg. Juan Gonzalez, a teacher, said they probably don't care about ruining the image of this destination because they are entrepreneurs from other states. ISLA MUJERES, 10 de mayo.-

On Saturday, Mr. Alberto Góngora Góngora, 70, went missing in the Continental Zone on the mainland of Isla Mujeres, which activated the Civil Protection and Police Departments and their protocols, to initiate a search. Officials were advised he was wearing Khaki pants and a red shirt and had disappeared at noon in the brushy area north of the landfill entrance. Personnel participating in the search and rescue effort included staff of the Isla Mujeres Civil Protection Department, three municipal police officers, six Cancun firefighters, six Rescue workers known as "Topos", twenty volunteers, and four dogs. As of Tuesday, we can report that Sr. Gongora has been found, and is now in his home.
Desde el pasado sábado que se tuvo conocimiento del extravío del Sr. Alberto Góngora Góngora, en la Zona Continental del municipio, se activaron los protocolos de Seguridad y Protección Civil en estos casos.
Ese mismo día inició la búsqueda de la persona de 70 años de edad y que al momento vestía pantalón color caqui y playera roja.
Los hechos ocurrieron aproximadamente a las 12 horas del sábado en el ramal norte entrada del basurero a 7 km hacia dentro en la Zona Continental de Isla Mujeres.
Este martes podemos informar con beneplácito que se localizó a Don Alberto Góngora Góngora y que ya se encuentra en su hogar.
En las labores de búsqueda y rescate participaron: los elementos de la Dirección de Protección Civil de Isla Mujeres, 3 policías de nuestro municipio, 6 integrantes del Heroico Cuerpo de Bomberos de Cancún, 6 rescatistas conocidos como “Topos”, 20 personas voluntarias y 4 perros.

Expecting whale shark permits on time

A few days before the start of the whale shark season on May 15, permit holders and travel agents are confident that the permits will be delivered on time, so the season can begin as scheduled. It is recalled that last year the permits were granted nearly 15 days after the scheduled start of the season. This required agents and permit holders to cancel reservations that had been made months in advance, and they are hoping that will not happen this year.
The permit holders of Isla Mujeres are also concerned about the lack of monitoring in the whale shark sighting areas, which has always been minimal and now is reduced since there was a cut in Marine Park personnel, including at Isla Contoy, leaving the Natural Protected Area with just one inspector, which is clearly insufficient. They also complained about the large private yachts whose passengers do not follow the rules and regulations regarding life vests and touching the animals, telling the permit holders they can do whatever they want because the sea belongs to everyone.
Very little overnight tourism

According to hoteliers and restaurateurs, a low number of overnight visitors are arriving, while there are a larger number of tourists who visit for the day, spending several hours on the island. The reporter walked around and observed an average number of people at the beaches and in the water, and watched dozens tourists arriving via catamarans, who were later routed toward the souvenir shops. The commisionistas awaited the arrivals of the ferries to offer boat tours and golf cart rentals, while workers in the tourism services booths offered information about their services and of the dive shops.
On Hidalgo, there is generally more activity at night, although on May 10th the restaurateurs were very pleased when many of their tables were occupied by families celebrating Mother's Day.

Business at floral shops increased on Mother's Day by as much as 70 percent, and local restaurants reported an increased demand. The City honored working mothers with a day off from work. Many families in the colonias set up tables on their patios and yards selling gifts such as sweets, shoes, purses & bags, roses, and other items.
Starting early in the day, bouquets of flowers could be seen all around the island, being carried on motorcycles, in golf carts, and on foot; and many mothers could be seen with flowers in hand and smiling faces. However, some mothers had to work, including in kitchens preparing dishes for those who were fortunate enough to have a day away from the stove.
Some women didn't receive a single flower or gift, and at best celebrated with their pets, because their children don't live on the island and are too busy with their own lives to remember who gave them the gift of life. Some children and relatives visited the cemeteries to place flowers on the graves and offer a prayer and give thanks for those who brought them into this world.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Our guests recommend the Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants.

May 7, Saturday "Ballet Son del Caribe" a troupe of five senior citizen women, will dance at 7pm at the outdoor theater of the Blue Dome in colonia La Gloria. This celebrates the 20th anniversary of the founding of the AA group "Una Esperanza en mi Vida", who are presenting an artistic and cultural festival featuring representations from the Mayan culture, regional traditions, and in collaboration with the children's ballet of the Casa de Cultura.
May 8, Sunday, at 6pm, "Pueblo Magico Nights" presents the Spring Festival 2016 in the open air theater of the Bicentenario plaza in colonia La Gloria.
