The night before the start of the XIII FISHING TOURNAMENT COSME ALBERTO MARTÍNEZ MAGAÑA, we shared a pleasant dinner with the captains of the boats and interacted with them, in an atmosphere of camaraderie and sportsmanship.
La noche previa al disparo de salida del XIII Torneo de Pesca Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña, compartimos el pan y la sal en una amena cena con los capitanes de las embarcaciones participantes; la camaradería y el espíritu deportivo prevaleció durante el convivio.

Thirteen years ago, Isla Mujeres became the location for one of the most important fishing tournaments in Quintana Roo; the Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña Tournament, beginning Saturday morning, when we fired the starting horn for the competion which brings fans of sports fishing to Isla Mujeres from all over the entire peninsula.
Desde hace trece años, las aguas que rodean a Isla Mujeres son el escenario para uno de los torneos de pesca más emblemáticos e importantes de Quintana Roo, el Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña; la mañana de este sábado dimos el disparo de salida de la competencia que reúne a amantes de la pesca deportiva de toda la península.

Installation of the Committee for the Protection of Sea Turtles
INSTALAN EL COMITÉ DE PROTECCIÓN A LA TORTUGA MARINA

The Committee for the Protection of Sea Turtles was installed Friday morning for the 2016 season which began Monday, May 15 and ends October 15, with ongoing patrols in the day and night. The Director of the Tortugranja, Raziel Rivero Coba, said the objective of the program is to protect the eggs from predators and poachers, in order to produce a larger number of hatchlings. There is also a goal of raising community awareness about the importance of conservation of this species.
Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez thanked those who make up the committee, recognizing each of the members and he said, "This is a great responsibility for those who perform this work." The Mayor distributed packets of work items (usually shirts) for the staff of the Tortugranja and the volunteers for their night patrols.
During the installation of the committee, an exhibition was given by Deline Garcia Canto, who is a Marine Biology student at UADY university. Those present at the event included: Mariano Poot Estrellas, Naval marine biologist; Vicente Borge, representing the Harbor Master; Carlos Barranco, director of the municipal Department of Ecology; Mauro Rodríguez Velázquez, director of Protección Civil; Joaquín Poot Acosta, Police Chief; Rocío Rodríguez Herrera, director of Educación and councilman, José Castillo Magaña.

More restriction for tour boats

   The Wildlife Department (DGVS) has further modified the Whale Shark Management Plan, which includes expansion (duplicación) of the perimeter, which was ~300,000 hectares in 2015, to ~633,000 hectares. Although it doesn't appear in the regulations, the quota of tourists allowed in each boat was reduced from 10 to six, for boats under 40 feet, according to an official announcement two days ago.
    The Management Plan also requires that the 300 permit holders be divided into two groups, with the sighting area having a capacity of 160 boats per day. The alternating dates are listed for Group 1 and Group 2.
   PROFEPA (Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection) will monitor for compliance with the established regulations and requirements, and the agency has the power to revoke permits for violations.The area of the whale shark concentrations is between Isla Mujeres, Puerto Juárez, Chiquilá and Isla Holbox, offshore from the municipalities of Lázaro Cárdenas, Benito Juárez and Isla Mujeres.

Restrictions continue for navigation by small boats

Due to the winds from the east, the Harbor Master's office has restricted boats under 40 feet to port to prevent accidents, and caution advisories were issued by the SCT (Department of Communications and Transport). The coastal fishermen with small vessels have been affected by southeasterly winds for a week, and the winds could continue this weekend, according to forecasts by CONAGUA (National Water Commission).

Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Our guests recommend the Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants.

May 7, Saturday "Ballet Son del Caribe" a troupe of five senior citizen women, will dance at 7pm at the outdoor theater of the Blue Dome in colonia La Gloria. This celebrates the 20th anniversary of the founding of the AA group "Una Esperanza en mi Vida", who are presenting an artistic and cultural festival featuring representations from the Mayan culture, regional traditions, and in collaboration with the children's ballet of the Casa de Cultura.

May 8, Sunday, at 6pm, "Pueblo Magico Nights" presents the Spring Festival 2016 in the open air theater of the Bicentenario plaza in colonia La Gloria.
