19 year old dies while spearfishing south of Isla Mujeres

The body of young spear fisherman-diver was located several meters under the sea this evening, after his disappearance was reported at 2pm. The body of Laureado Canul Cupul, 19, was identified by his father, after it was located during a search of the area near Punta Sur, where he had gone into the sea earlier in the day.
His father explained that he had been with another friend, but his companion had lost sight of him after they entered the water. The friend searched for him for several hours, and then spoke to the authorities for assistance. Boats from various cooperatives, including Social Justicia, searched for the young man, in the miles surrounding Punta Sur.
At nearly 7pm, just as the search was about to be suspended due to loss of visibility because it was getting dark, fishermen aboard the boat "Caleta" found the body in several meters of water. One of the fishermen who participated in the search explained that the young man was still wearing his weight belt (lead) and the line of his harpoon was wrapped around his feet.
The body of the fisherman was transported to the pier of the Harbor Master, where the area was roped off, and they waited for assistance from the Ministerio Publico.

Teachers upset over raffle
Profesores están que trinan+] Ver mas Photos & full article at this link
May 13    On Thursday evening, the dinner celebrating Teacher's Day was followed by a raffle, which generated discord when the main prize of a car was won by a teacher who lives in Cancun. The winner, Erika Ek Cuevas, works at the kindergarten "Yalahua" in the municipality of Benito Juarez. A union leader, Patricial Sanchez Trinchan, said that preschool campus involves the two municipalities of Benito Juarez and Isla Mujeres.
Other union leaders immediately protested, including teacher Cristina Medina Figueroa. The unhappy teachers say the car should only be raffled off to Isla Mujeres teachers, because Cancun teachers receive their own prizes. Objections were made on social networks, and not all teachers were present at the official ceremony on Friday morning in Amplificacion La Gloria at the Monument to Teachers. At that event, one of those present fainted, and was assisted by the Red Cross. The Thursday evening dinner and raffle was held at El Pescador beach club.

"Decision" increases lead
“Decision” amplía su ventaja. [+] Ver mas
May 13  The shifting winds and circular currents in the Gulf of Mexico caused three sailboats to return to Pensacola on Friday, while the rest of the competitors in the 29th Regata "Al Sol" continued toward Isla Mujeres. The leader of the race, "Decision" increased its speed from 10.5 knots to 15.5 knots as it headed toward the Yucatan Channel. If it continues at these speeds, it is expected to arrive Saturday night or in the early hours before dawn on Sunday. The three boats which returned to Florida are: Radio Flyer, Hawke and Do Little.
The entire race covers approximately 555 nautical miles, and this competition has a history of over half a century. The coordinators of the race and the organizing committee are making preparations to receive the participants, and the Navy is preparing to place its ship near El Yunque islet, which is the finishing line. (This regatta comes to Isla Mujeres every other year, while the Sol al Sol from St. Petersburg, which was earlier this month, visits annually.)

Diver missing at sea
Buzo desaparecido en el mar.. [+] Ver mas
May 13  A young diver, Laurentino Canul Cupul (aka "Tino") went diving in the morning at Punta Sur and had not returned home in the afternoon.  Around 4pm, assistance was sought from the Navy by Raul Ehuan Canch, to help find him before sunset. A speedboat was immediately sent out to seach for the young man, and the Navy confirmed it began searching at 4pm. Two hours later there had been no positive result. Sr. Ehuan wrote on social networks, asking for help to find his brother, saying he had gone out near Punta Sur, with Julio, who had left the water at noon, but Tino did not. Sr. Ehuan asked for help from boat owners who provide tours and from fishermen.
The weather was not good for this type of activity, with early morning forecasts for the Yucatan Peninsula predicting partly cloudy skies with a 40 percent chance of rain for Quintana Roo. Temperatures were very hot during the day, with winds from the east at 15-30 kph, with gusting. Caution was advised for small boats in the coastal areas and seas near Quintana Roo, by the SCT (Secretary of Communications and Transport).
This unfortunate event occurs at a time when many people are anxious over the disappearance of five Isla Mujeres fishermen two months ago from an area just north of Cozumel. Despite an intense search for a full month, there has been no trace of them, which has affected many families.
