Whale shark tour season begins

Arranca temporada de tiburón ballena

ISLA MUJERES, 26 de mayo.-

The Harbor Master of Isla Mujeres, Ismael Gonzalez Gil, reported that the whale shark tour permits have been released by the Wildlife Department and CONANP (National Commission of Natural Protected Area). Since May 25, about 225 of the ~320 permits (~70 percent) have been released, for the licensees of Isla Mujeres, Lazaro Cardenas, and Cancun. About 150 of these belong to providers from Isla Mujeres and the other ~75 are from Chiquilá, Holbox, and Cancún.
On Thursday, only one boat went out & it is expected that most of those who have received their authorizations will begin operations on Friday, after they receive clearance from the Harbor Master (Port Authority). The season was originally scheduled from May 15 to September 17, but began 11 days late this year, and was about two weeks late last year.

Permits released for whale shark tour boats
Liberan permisos para el avistamiento del tiburón ballena.. [+] Ver mas
On Wednesday, it was announced that the DVGS (Wildlife Department) had begun releasing the ~300 permits for whale shark tours, and now the Harbor Master has confirmed that his office has started processing the documents. The Port Authority must review that each permit holder has the proper security documents including insurance papers, documents for the crew members, and others, and then they are allowed to sail the following day.
According to some information, it appears the reduction of tourists from 10 to 6 per boat is not in effect, and they will be allowed to have 10 tourists, as in 2015. Nor are they applying the "every other day" rule in order to maintain the capacity limit of 160 boats, allegedly.
