In order to differentiate the destinations in Quintana Roo, representatives of several business organizations have signed a petition to
submit to Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez requesting the addition of the term "Maya" to the promotional slogan "Caribe Mexicano".
They say there are three options for this proposal: “Caribe Maya Mexicano”, “Maya Caribe Mexicano”, and “Caribe Mexicano
Maya”.
The business leaders who are promoting these slogans include Guadalupe Martínez Márquez, leader of the Hoteles de Isla Mujeres (HIM); Juan Carrillo Figueroa of the Chamber of Commerce (CANACO); and Baltazar Maldonado from (CANIRAC), the restaurant organization; as well as the Vice President of the Asociación de Pequeños Hoteles, Gerardo Magaña, and the President of that organization, Leonel Povedano Castillo.

This weekend it became official that Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, and Mission, Texas, are sister cities. The event took place as part of the Festival of Citrus, in Mission, which is one of the most important cultural traditions in that Texan town. The process began last year during August when the Mayor of Mission, Norberto Salinas, was accompanied by an official delegation that came to the Isla Mujeres Town Hall to sign an agreement. This official twinning opens doors for more tourism, as well as cooperation and support.
On this visit, Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez and his US counterpart ratified this document between these two communities, one tourist and the other agricultural, to begin a new era of collaboration and support. The city of Mission has become a sister city with 18 towns in Mexico. During his visit in Texas, Mayor Agapito received the keys to the city of Mission as a gesture of friendship and goodwill between both cities for their mutual economic, cultural, and social benefit.

Many visitors on the island

Hotel occupancy rose to 75 percent this week and is expected to increase slightly in February, according to the number of reservations. The Tourism Director, Gustavo Rodriguez, pointed out that the last two winter storms have caused more people to seek warmer locations, and Mexico remains very attractive. However the first storm caused the cancellation of many flights from cities in the north, but now the flow of visitors has normalized.
The weather is stable on the island and all types of recreational activities are taking place on land and sea. There have been no problems with traffic, despite the large numbers of visitors, which is also true on Isla Blanca (on the mainland part of the municipality in the Continental Zone.)
The weather report indicated good conditions with low winds, with forecasts for their strength to increase, with winds from the east-southeast. This stable weather pattern should remain for most of the week, until the next cold front arrives. Medium sized boats are arriving and departing from the United States and Central America without problems, and it is noted that the beacon at El Cabezo is reduced.

Former hospital grounds need cleaning up

The grounds of the former hospital downtown are overgrown and cluttered with debris, causing citizens and business owners to complain that this should be cleaned up. There are old chairs, wheelchairs, wooden shelves, and an ancient well with brackish water, as well as an overgrowth of weeds, which presents a poor image, as well as poor public health conditions. It is also noted that the abandoned hotel construction near Media Luna beach could be a source for mosquito breeding.

Fine dining a few steps away at Da Luisa or try the traditional neighborhood eateries a couple blocks farther. Stroll five minutes southward down the coastal sidewalk to Mango Cafe, Bahama Mama, Brisas, or Manolitos. Walk less than 10 minutes southwest to shop at Chedraui or to dine at Green Verde, Kash Kechen Chuc, or other options. Visit marinas, bars, & beach clubs that are minutes away by bike or on foot. Our guests recommend the Yoga classes a couple villas away at hotelito Casa Ixchel. Fresh juice, produce & tortillas a few blocks away in the village, as well as a variety of other stores and small local restaurants.
