ISLA MUJERES, 11 de octubre.-
The Mayor presented new baseball uniforms to the "Cahuameros" of Isla Mujeres over breakfast at a downtown restaurant, who will compete in the Baseball Major League of Quintana Roo, which begins this weekend. The team has been completely renovated, and consists mostly of junior players who are between the ages of 15 and 22. Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez encouraged the community to support the team during their local games, as well as when they play at the cities of the other teams, which creates a major expense.
It should be noted that the City is one of the main sponsors of the team, and in addition to providing uniforms, they pay some of the expenses that are required to participate in this tournament. Additionally, assistance is provided by some of the local businessmen and fans of the sport.
The Cahuameros of Isla Mujeres with begin the tournament with a game against the Cozumel Islanders on November 7 and 8. The team consists mostly of young players who have played for other teams in Isla Mujeres that participated in the Junior Olympics, including: Alexander Heredia, aka “Choky”, Lizandro Avalos, José Luis García “Teto”, Hugo Castillo, Miguel Parra, Martín Mendo, Luis Díaz, José López, Jonathan Lara “Toitan”, René Parra, Martín Ancona, George San Román, Carlos Fernández, Roberto Pinto, Arturo Martínez, Amado Fernández, and the seasoned players Edwin Hernández, Irving Avila and Oswaldo Guzmán.

Hoteliers expected more tourists to arrive for the festivities for Dia de los Muertos, which should increase occupancy levels, which have remained above 40 percent. They said this season has been better than last year, and they expect even more improvement today and Monday, because, as you know, these are the main days of the celebration of Dia de los Muertos.
The municipal Director of Tourism, Gustavo Orozco Rodriguez, said there are several activities that have been organized for these dates. He said there are hotels that have offered three day and two night packages, to encourage overnight occupancy. The students and officials of Jean Piaget school conducted a procession through the main streets of the island.
The Tourism Director said that many tourists come for these enjoyable events and are impressed at the manner in which tribute is paid to the dead with this celebration. Activities range from a contest of traditional altars to the dead, as well as visits and masses inside the cemetery. He said he expects occupancy to improved even more with the Caribbean Culture Festival 2015, which is scheduled to begin on November 13.

Few visiting cemetery on Saturday morning

Many of the graves have not been cleaned, painted, and decorated with new flowers and candles at this time. Although some have been given attention, there are others which appear to have not been visited recently.
Some people say the cemetery downtown is so crowded that it is very difficult and uncomfortable to spend time there because you must remain standing, and to move around, you must walk on the graves. There are some graves with candles, fresh flowers, and fresh paint, which remain well maintained throughout the year. Some plan to visit for a few minutes at different times this afternoon, Sunday, Nov. 1st.
Some people recall that in the places where they come from, the families spend hours in the cemetery, even spending all night until dawn on the day of departed children, which is a widespread traditions in the states of Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco, among others. (All Saint's Day is Nov. 1, when departed children are remembered, and All Soul's Day is Nov. 2)
Legendary packing plant falling down

The upstairs level of the old seafood packing plant, which was operational in Isla Mujeres for many decades, is falling down, due to humidity and abandonment. The facility ceased operations some years ago, and its owner, don Romero Magana Carrillo passed away two years ago. According to some former employees, the decrease in production of lobster, shrimp, and fish in the late 90's and early years of 2000, led to the closure of the facility.
Now it has no doors or windows and could pose a danger to anyone who enters, since it could collapse from its state of advanced deterioration, due to the moisture and the recent rains. In the 60's, 70's, and 80's, it exported seafood as the packing plant "Romeo", until the decline in production of shrimp, lobster, and shrimp led to its closure, according to sources.
You may recall that don Romeo Magana passed away on Oct. 23, 2013, at age 85 at his home in Merida, Yucatan, and then two of his brothers passed away. The older one died at the beginning of the year on April 29 in a hospital in Merida, who was the first mayor of Isla Mujeres, Ariel "Picho" Magana, and before the end of that year, he was followed by ferry entrepreneur don Raul.
In Sports
Municipal authorities honored the memory of Romeo and Ariel. The former founded the packing plant which operated for more than 30 years, and in the area of sports, he demonstrated his entrepreneurial vision by acquiring, along with his brothers Ariel and Raul, the Mexican Baseball League franchise for the Leones of Yucatan, who won the championship in 1984. In 1996, he was the main promoter for Quintana Roo, backing the Langosteros of Quintana Roo, and he also had a team in Nuevo Laredo.

Activities at the Casa de la Cultura:
On October 12, a workshop will begin on Painting and Drawing with teacher Dante Loyola at the Casa de Cultura on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm, for 50 pesos weekly, which includes basic materials.
On October 5, fitness classes to relieve stress and improve fitness will begin, with Dani Velasquez, at a cost of 100 pesos a week, on Monday thru Friday at 6pm, at the Casa de Cultura.
On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 5pm, there are classes for those who enjoy the rhythms of urban dance, hip hop, soca, afro, and mambo de calle at the Casa de Cultura.
A theater workshop for youths and adults will begin on Oct. 14 from 6p-8p, with teacher Rita Giacchetti, with the objective of teaching the participants how to put on a performance. There will be 24 sessions between Mondays and Fridays, with a small contribution required.

Isla Mujeres: A Place of Traditions Participate! This is a poster for a Hanal Pixan altar competition Hanal Pixan is the Mayan holiday that occurs around the time of Dia de los Muertos and Halloween. It lasts about a week and a half and is a commemoration of departed relatives and friends, who are remembered with offerings of their favorite foods, drinks, and items at altars containing their photos, at homes, businesses, and other locations, and their graves are cleaned and decorated. There are specials foods and other traditions.

Saturday, Nov. 14 at 6pm, there will be a performance by the
Symphonic Orchestra of Quintana Roo, featuring songs written by
isleños, including Virgilio “El Chino” Fernández and his son Virgilio
Fernández. This will be followed by “El Chevo y su Swing Urbano”, who
play a mix of Caribbean rhythms and urban music, including the hit:
“Métela Sácala”. Then Cumbia legend Celso Piña, will take the stage,
creator of the hit “Cumbia Sobre el Río Suenan”, accompanied by Patricio
Elizalde (Pato Machete).
Sunday, Nov. 15 at 7pm, there will be a performance by the Ballet de Danza Folclórica de México, followed by Son de la Catedral, and a presentation by Charanga Habanera; whose leader David Calzado is known for the hit “Gozando de la Habana”.
