Patron saint festival begins tomorrow honoring the Virgin of Immaculate Conception

En honor de la Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción

Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 26 de noviembre.-
Isla Mujeres priest, Raul Sanchez Alonso, held a press conference to present the program of festivities. and he was accompanied by the priest Germán May Cabrera, of the municipality of José María Morelos, and a coordinator for the event, Gibrán Mex. This year the event will include the Virgin of Cozumel, accompanied by a group of 50 people, who will arrive on the morning of December 7th. In subsequent years, it is hoped that the Virgin of Immaculate Conception of Kantunilkin, will come, bringing together the three Virgins of Izamal, Isla Mujeres, and Kantunilkín.
The sea procession is scheduled for December 8th at 4pm, departing from the concrete pier, with decorated boats. The priests spoke about these events strengthening faith and involving families, and about the importance of participating and collaborating. They encouraged people to be involved with banners and pictures, and noted that every year a growing number of tourists join the local residents.

HERE is an article about the origins of this icon, which is one of three 'sister' statues of the Virgin, and about this annual festival.

Serious erosion at beaches
Grave erosión de playas[+] Ver mas
Some 200 meters of North Beach have been eaten away at the western side, which is threatening to affect some coconut palms and buildings, which concerns entrepreneurs who have concessions in the Federal Zone, including Carlos Cervera. He says the 'whales' or 'geotubes' that protected the beach have deteriorated and need rehabilitation or replacement. There are eight geotubes that were installed after Hurricane Wilma in 2005, which need renovating or replacement. The effects of cold front number 14 are evident, which have affected the island since Monday.

This has the same information as translated above, except it also says the program will include 50 persons of the ballet folclórico de Cozumel when the Virgin is brought from that island. There will be a concert on Saturday, Nov. 28, in the evening after the procession, at the esplanade of the Church. Each evening there will be cultural activities from Saturday, November 28 to December 8, for enjoyment of families and tourists and to strengthen the faith of believers.

Entrepreneurs support airport project
Apoyan empresarios proyecto aeroportuario.. [+] Ver mas
Business leaders support the proposal to rescue the airfield, now that its administration has been turned over to the government of Quintana Roo, according to Juan Carrillo Figueroa, leader of the business organization CANACO and Baltazar Maldonado, leader of the food industry organization CANIRAC.
Sr. Carrillo said, "Fifty years ago the airfield was important place for the arrival of tourism to Isla Mujeres, when commercial flights arrived from the center and southern parts of the country, as well as private planes from different locations, and above all, from the United States of America."  But when the Cancun airport began operations, it stopped receiving commercial flights, and has been only functioning for small private planes. Now there is an excellent opportunity to once again promote the arrival of more tourists in this way, by receiving charter flights from different parts of Mexico, as well as from the US.
If the necessary adjustments are made to the runway, it could receive small jets and commercial flights of small aircraft, according to Sr. Carrillo, which would beneficial for Isla Mujeres visitors. He said,  "With the operation of the airfield, if a visitor required services of an air ambulance that could be done, which makes this location more attractive to different segments of tourists who visit this destination."
Sr. Maldonado said there is a basic need to support this plan, "Because it is beneficial to the tourism industry. We are in agreement about the need to support this, always."
