Sustained growth of tourism continues in Isla Mujeres
In May the number of visitors arriving by sea increased 22 percent, compared to the same period last year. This was announced by Ricardo Ancona Argaez, representative of the Port Authority (APIQRoo) in Puerto Juarez, who said in May, there were 177,664 passengers transported to Isla Mujeres from various departure points located in Puerto Juarez, Cancun, and Punta Sam. Last year in May, there were 139,155 boat passengers.
He said so far this year, during January-May, there were 904,107 passengers transported, which is an increase of 19 percent over the same period in 2014, when 735,056 were brought to the isle by boat.
The official said these positive statistics are the result of hard work and constant promotion by Governor Roberto Borge Angulo, in a coordinated effort between the three levels of government and the tourism sector. He said tourism promotion is done in Mexico and its main destinations around the world, to position Quintana Roo among the preferred destinations for vacationers, who can count on a variety of tourism attractions for all types of preferences such as beach and sun, cultural, eco-tourism & adventure, sports tourism, and luxury tourism.
Isla Mujeres is a site that offers sun and beaches, archeological and historical sites, water parks, ecological reserves, reefs, diving, swimming with whale sharks, underwater museum, sculpture parks, and other attractions, with the bonus of the hospitality of the people, tranquility, beauty, and safety. He said because of all this, Isla Mujeres is a place there people return to visit, which allows it to maintain sustained growth.
The municipal president, Agapito Magana Sanchez, led the inauguration and press conference for the "Seventh Annual Campaign for the Education and Prevention of HIV and Teen Pregnancy in Isla Mujeres 2015".
On Wednesday morning, information was given about actions that will prevent and treat sexually transmitted diseases, and about research and recovery, for the improvement of the quality of life of the community. The event was conducted by the municipal Department of Health in coordination with the Brazos Abiertos/Open Arms foundations. Among the states, Quintana Roo has the highest rate of teen pregnancy. Therefore it is important to provide and support activities such as these to promote healthy relationships and to raise awareness of the young people in the state. The mayor offered gratitude and recognition from the City Council for this seventh annual campaign of education for prevention of teen pregnancy and sexual transmitted diseases and HIV, conducted by this foundation.

The fifth edition of the Exchange of Propane Tanks in poor condition took place at the dome in colonia La Gloria, for the benefit and safety of island families. It was conducted by the City, via the Civil Protection Department, in coordination with the company Z Gas.

Repairing the pumps

On Wednesday, employees of the Civil Protection department were repairing the pumps near the Casa de Cultura, which function to drain water away from the intersection of Hidalgo and Abasolo. When the two pumps are operating correctly, they are able to evacuate thousands of cubic meters of rain water, to reduce the water level in less than an hour, when flooding occurs during periods of prolonged rainfall. But in the recent flooding, this took hours, and the volume of water being discharged was reduced, with indications that one of the pumps was broken. Merchants in the area, who are angry about the flooding and damage to their goods, question the attitude of the director of Civil Protection and suggest the pumps need better maintenance.

Father Raul Sanchez Alonso announced there will be a meeting in Isla Mujeres, led by Catholic missionary Father Alvaro Carrillo Lugo, who regularly organizes massive events of prayer and healing. It will be held on July 10 in the town square at 6:30pm. This will be his fourth visit to Isla Mujeres.
Tickets are available and can be purchased from the Catholic groups: Misioneros del Divino Niño Jesús, Carisma Joven, and from the legionarias de la Caridad del Cobre. Because of the magnitude of this event, it will be promoted in Cancun and tickets will be sold there. The last time he visited Cancun, this priest attracted 3500 people.

The Navy will have a booth showing their diving equipment as well as their rescue program to combat pollution at sea, and a conference that is open to the public entitled "Mangroves".
The CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) will have a exhibition of various ways to produce electricity, aimed at grade school children.
The Human Rights Commission will have a booth and the state Director will inaugurate the fair, with the Mayor.
The labor union CROC is supplying volunteers and had donated ornamental plants, to be used for reforestation.
The DIF is participating and will be giving away discs showing how to conserve water.
Aguakan will have a booth, who often work with NGO's.
The Maritime Terminal is organizing a Drawing Contest titled "A Child's View of Caring for Nature" ( “la mirada de los niños en cuidado de la naturaleza”), and the ferry company will be responsible for the prizes.
The Veterinary Clinic of Isla Mujeres (La Clínica Veterinaria de Isla Mujeres AC) will have animals available for adoption and materials available about pet care.
The Tortugranja (Turtle Farm) will have a booth about the work they do as programs for reproduction and care for sea turtles.
The Municipal Ecology department are actively participating and will have a booth featuring the actions of their agency in favor of ecology.
The NGO Green Patrol/Paturlla Verde will present photographs from 15 years of educational work on the island.

June 13, Saturday 10am or 11am 1st Gran Cabalgata (Mounted Parade) on Rueda Medina, from downtown in front of the Ferry Terminal along Rueda Medina until the Unidad Deprotiva (colonia Salina Chica?), where they will go toward Jesus Martinez Ross Avenue, then to the intersection of Paseo de los Peces in colonia La Gloria and over to the coastal road, to the southern part of the isle, stopping at the paths (dirt roads) in that area. After the horses drink water, they will take the same route back north to the chapel La Guadalupe and then gather at the El Pescador ballbark.(in front of Cheraui) The procession is expected to take about three hours. There will be a special brigade to remove the feces, and there will be collaboration with the Traffic police and Civil Protection to ensure a safe event. There will be entertainment at the park until 7pm, including the band "Laguna Verde". A donation of 20 pesos will contribute to the fund for the construction of a seminary being built in Bonfil.
The procession will include riders from Tizimín, Kantunilkín, Valladolid, Cancún and Isla Mujeres. Rain is forecast for Saturday, which could cancel the event.
