Reactivating Sister-City status with Old Havana

ISLA MUJERES, 2 de junio.-

Cuban specialists to assist with Mundaca restoration

Announcement by town historian

Anuncia cronista vitalicio

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 2 de junio.-
In recent months the City of Isla Mujeres confirmed the discovery of archaeological remains within the former Hacienda Mundaca, which occured during excavations conducted by the staff of the INAH, National Institute of Anthropology and History. The initial discovery was made by chance, and now the INAH is in charge of the investigation. So far they have found five chultunes, which are reservoirs built by the Maya and used to store food and water. Each is an bottle shaped underground chamber with an average depth of 2.5 meters, with a diameter of 60 to 70 centimeters, reduced at the opening. The discovery of foundations was announced, and there may possibly be remains of tombs, which indicates there were Mayan settlements at the site.
Isla Mujeres historian, and municipal trustee, Fidel Villanueva Madrid announced the possibility that support staff from Cuba could come to Isla Mujeres to assist in the restoration and recovery of Hacienda Mundaca. Clarissa Spencer, specialist in the Department of Investments of the Historians Office of Habana, Cuba, said they intend to come to Isla Mujeres to assist in this work. She said that with this work there can be improvement of the cultural and environmental aspects of this location, which can improve tourism based on the history and culture of this place, which the specialist considers to be very interesting and substantial.
"At Mundaca Hacienda there is a great deal of natural and human culture, that is very interesting and there may be things of great value to further understand the culture of the indigenous and modern people of Isla Mujeres," she said. She explained that these planned works would be a very important contribution to cultural tourism; a diversification from the tourism of beaches and sun, which could be very valuable to this vacation destination.

Saying the price of lobster per kilogram will double next season

Precio por kilogramo se duplicará durante la próxima temporada, aseguran

Lanrry PARRA

ISLA MUJERES, 2 de junio.-

With lobster season beginning in about a month on July 1st, negotiations are beginning to set the price per kilogram between representatives of the fishing cooperatives and the  Federation of Fishing groups in the state.  Baltasar Gómez Catzín, leader of fishermen in Isla Mujeres said that after negotiations it is expected that the price of a kilogram of lobster tail will nearly double, while the live lobster price may increase by 60 pesos.  He said that during the 2015-2016 season the price of a kilogram of lobster tail will be 500 pesos and live lobster for 300 pesos. He said that during the last season the price of lobster tail was equal to that of live lobster at 240/pesos/kilo.
He said the price increase is solely due to the fluctuation in the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Mexican peso. Last season you could purchase a dollar for 12 pesos and now it is 15 pesos, which forces them to seek better prices for seafood since most of their equipment and the engines they use are of foreign origin. He said they wanted to ask for more, but they do not want to "kill" the restauranteurs. The meeting between the representatives of the fishing coops and the state federation of fishing groups is scheduled for Thursday, June 18 at the premises of the Federation in Puerto Juarez
Lobster prices during the 2014 season were reported to be $410 pesos per kilo for tails and 210p/kilo for live lobster (LINK) and in 2013 to be 400 pesos/kilo for tails and 200p/kilo for live lobster (LINK)
In 2013, 400p/kilo equals 181p/lb. for tails, using an exchange rate of 12.5, was $14.48/lb. (Whole lobster at 210p/kilo is 96p/lb or $7.68/lb).
In 2014, at 410p/kilo, exchange rate 12.5, was $14.90/lb for tails.
If this season, tails will be 500p/kilo is 227p/lb with an exchange rate of 15, equals $15.15/lb
    So, lobster tails cost  ~$15usd/lb

In recent days the mayor, Agapito Magaña Sanchez, received the ambassador to Cuba, Dagoberto Martinez, who paid a visit to Isla Mujeres aimed at strengthening ties of friendship and cooperation between the two islands.

Isla Mujeres - The City seeks to reactivate Sister-City status between Old Havana and Isla Mujeres

The delegation from Cuba included Cuba's Consul in Cancun, Roberto Hernandez; the Minister of Tourism for the Cuban Embassy in Mexico, Xiomara Martinez; the Secretary of Tourism of Havana, Xonia Beltran; the Secretary of Tourism of Varadero, Ivis Fernandez; and the Director of HabanaTour, Lazaro O'Reilly.
During the cordial meeting, the Cuban diplomat and the Mexican mayor reviewed the history of good neighborliness, friendship, and cooperation that has existed since ancient times between the two Caribbean islands.
During a tour of various tourist, historical and cultural attractions of Isla Mujeres, members of the Cuban delegation expressed their appreciation and interest in knowing details about each site visited.
This is the first approach by the current municipal administration with the Cuban diplomats to revive the status of sister-cities between Old Havana and Isla Mujeres.
Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez said, "We plan two objectives. First, to strengthen the indissoluble bonds of friendship based on closeness and history between our countries, and secondly, to revive the twinning by means of mutual collaboration."
The meeting demonstrated the willingness of the participants to finalize the 'twinning', with each one expressing and suggesting the best methods to achieve this and to continue the longstanding relationship of brotherhood from ancient times.
Finally, it must be emphasized that with the 'twinning' of our cities we are solidifying our relationships and links in the areas of history, tourism, culture, and commercialism, and above all to maintain close ties of friendship and solidarity.

Few boats going out
Salen pocas embarcaciones.. [+] Ver mas

Although authorized whale shark tour providers were expressing their concern recently about delays in receiving their permits, now less than 20 boats depart daily seeking the whale sharks, while we are still in low season and there is little demand from tourists for this activity.
In an interview, the Harbor Master, Miguel Ismael Gonzalez Gil, recalled that there was a delay in issuing the permits from the Wildlife Department whose season was scheduled from May 15 to Sept 17. Permissions were granted in a timely manner by CONANP (National Commission for Protected Natural Areas), allowing the licensees to work in the Aguas Verdes of the Contoy area beginning on June 1st, when the season began in that park.
He said according to the records of the Wildlife Department, there are 280 boats in Isla Mujeres that are authorized for watching and swimming with the whale sharks this season, of which 160 have obtained their permits from CONANP. He said at this time, tourists must travel 40 nautical miles to reach the area where a group of whale sharks are currently located, which is known as El Cabo (The Cape).
The Harbor Master recommended to the nautical community in general and to the whale shark licensees in particular to use extreme caution due to the current weather conditions and to maintain their safety equipment in their boats, for whatever unforeseen event that may arise.
In response to a direct question, Miguel Ismael Gonzalez seat since it is not yet the start of summer high season, less than 20 boats are departing daily for whale shark tours due to low demand for the tours.

Weather affects the nautical service providers
Mal clima afectó a los náuticos [+] Ver mas

Although the cloudy sky and threat of rain on Tuesday was no impediment to keeping the port open for navigation by all types of vessels, the nautical service providers had little demand for their services, from snorkeling tours to whale shark tours.  Similarly, with the absence of sun and presence of large clouds, the weather was not cooperative for sunbathing, which discouraged people from populating the beaches.
The nautical service cooperatives reported a demand between 20 and 40 percent, depending on the cooperative. The golf cart rental agencies who were consulted reported rental of about 70 percent of their inventory.
On Tuesday, there was no large presence of tourists, and most of the visitors seen arriving on the ferries did not have luggage or backpacks, which indicates they only came to stay for a few hours. The merchants reported slow sales, but most are confident that sales will increase with the start of summer high season.
Next a weather forecast is given. This morning the sun is shining, and the wind has switched and is coming from the north, and kicking up a few whitecaps. Looks like it will be a lovely, sunny day!

Desperate father asks for help to locate his son in Cuba
Desesperado padre pide ayuda para localizar a su hijo en Cuba[+] Ver mas

Yohander Crombet Betancourt, 32, who is mentally handicapped, disappeared on March 20th in the province of Guantamo, Cuba. His father, Ciro Crombet Hurtado, traveled to the neighboring isle trying to find him, but was unsuccessful. However, he is confident that the Cuban authorities will find him soon.
Sr. Ciro Crombert went to the Por Esto offices to request that Cuban authorities assist the family of the young Cuban resident who has disappeared, and they have been seeking him without success. "We know that the newspaper Por Esto goes to Cuba, and I hope that by appearing in this article, that it might expedite the search for my son, who has been gone for more than 70 days."
He said the last time there was news of Yohander was March 20th and since then on two or three occasions some people have seen him, but no one can explain. "I am very concerned. My child has limited mental faculties. He is barely able to communicate the basics. He can ask for food, for shoes, or for money, but that's about it. He lived with his grandmother until she died, then he was under the care of a man who was over 80 years old, who could not look after him. That was where we lost track of him, because it appears that he left, but no one knows where he went.
The anguished father spent 15 days in Cuba trying to locate Yohander, but returned empty handed, with no news about his son. He said he does not want to turn the disappearance of his son into a political problem, but he wants him to appear.  He said he had already begun getting the documents for Yohander to come to Isla Mujeres to live with him, and he is confident this will succeed when his son is found, but at this time he is afraid that with his mental handicap, the young man could have serious problems.
He said, "I am asking the Cuban authorities to assist the family who live on the island and who are looking for him. There are photos of my son in the street in case anyone recognizes him, they can contact my people and let them know. In fact,  there have been reports, two or three times, of his being seen, but no one could give me any information. I would have stayed longer, but I ran out of resources and had to return. I will go again when I have collected more money."
Finally, he said he had contacted the Cuban Consul in Cancun to explain the problem, who issued to him an official letter requesting the cooperation of the Cuban authorities to establish the whereabouts of the young man who has gone astray, describing this assistance as a humanitarian act.
