Rain causes flooding on Hidalgo and Rueda Medina avenues

En las avenidas Hidalgo y Rueda Medina

Lanrry PARRA
Various parts of the island experienced flooding following the rains that occurred in the morning, which affected residents and business owners, and prompted the mobilization of the Department of Civil Protection. Those workers activated the pump to remove the water accumulating on Hidalgo and were successful around noon.
They also worked, with employees from Aguakan, to drain the water from Rueda Medina avenue in front of the Fishermen's Monument. It was noted that although the rain passed and the problem of flooding was resolved,  this problem will return and a permanent solution is needed.

With the participation and commitment of governmental agencies, departments, companies, civil associations, municipal departments and society in general, on Thursday morning the Municipal Standing Committee and Council Specializing in Hydrometeorological Phenomena was installed.
Every year, in each of the municipalities of Quintana Roo, following the guideline and instruction of Governor Roberto Borge, Municipal Committees are installed in order to strategize, organize and prepare for any emergency with the authorities that are connected to such operations. The three levels of government work together to implement planning for prevention in the event of severe weather in order to have strategies in place before, during, and after a hurricane.
The municipal Director of Civil Protection, Mauro Humberto Rodriguez Velazquez, reviewed the list of shelters and supplies, noting there are 14 schools with the capacity to shelter 2400 people who would otherwise be the most vulnerable. Regarding potable water, he said there are three cárcamos  of potable water with a capacity of 2750 cubic meters.
He also explained that there are six pumps for removing storm water, of which two are in Salina Chica, two are in Salina Grande, and two are at the street Abasolo. (to remove flooding at the intersection of Abasolo and Hidalgo, downtown.) He said they are continuing the work of cleaning the storm grates and drains to prevent possible flooding and puddling.
The Mayor said the island community has experience with hurricanes, and an awareness about them, and he spoke about the commitment and responsibility of each of the members of this committee.
Admiral Juan Guillermo Fiero Rocha, commander of the Fifth Naval Region, participated and said that all the human resources, equipment, and expertise of the Navy of Mexico are at the service of the population in three areas: the preservation of national sovereignty, protection of human life, and the support and assistance of the populace.

The mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez, led the installation of The Organizing Committee of the Women's Fishing Tournament "La Dorada del Caribe".  The task of each of the members is to ensure that the singular event is special in the area of the fishing in the Mexican Caribbean.

The Harbor Master continues to keep the port closed for navigation by small boats
The port remained closed for navigation by small boats through Thursday, due to strong winds and rain caused by Tropical Wave #4. The port had been closed since Tuesday night. Harbor Master Ismael Gonzalez Gil said the weather may improve on Friday, but the forecast is not good for Saturday and Sunday.
The restriction applied to boats under 40 feet and underwater activities, and didnot allowing trips to Isla Contoy, or the Whale Shark tour area, among others. He said when there are adverse weather conditions, these type of restrictions exist to prevent accidents. Public works progress for tap water in Cancun and Isla Mujeres....

CANCÚN, Quintana Roo, 11 de junio.—...
The residents of Cancun and residents of Isla Mujeres near its runway are having their network of potable water renovated by the business Aguakan, thanks to Governor Borge Angulo and President Pena Nieto. The Director General of CAPA (Commission of Potable Water and Sewage), Paula Gonzalez Cetina, said that as part of the Budget Plan of 2015 there is 46.4 million pesos committed to rehabilitation to the potable water network by the company Aguakan  in nine supermanzanas of Cancun ('blocks') as well as the area of Isla Mujeres known as "Aeropuerto".
The project will renovate a total of 33,133 linear meters of tubing, directly benefiting 16,434 residents in the two municipalities, who will soon be able to count on more efficient potable water service, which will result in a higher quality of life for their families.

The passage of tropical wave number four brought strong rains and, as expected, caused serious flooding in various parts of the island. The photo shows the flooding on Rueda Medina near the Fishermen's monument.

Ready to face Hurricane Season

Everyone made promises, but none follow thru
Todos prometen, pero nadie cumple] Ver mas
Business leaders whose establishments were close to flooded areas are complaining about economic losses because customers were unable to reach them yesterday morning until after 11am, when the water level was lowered. This included the former president of the business organization CANACO, Juan Carlos Pena, and president of the restaurant association CANIRAC, Baltazar Baldonado.(sic..Maldonado). They are complaining about a recurring problem since Rueda Medina was renovated in 2010, and say there is a 6 inch pipe that should evacuate the water into the bay, by gravity, that is apparently clogged. (Reuda Medina is the main street downtown, and water accumulates near the Monument to the Fishermen at its northern end.)
The Director of Civil Protection, Humberto Rodriguez Velazquez, said he instructed his employee to supervise the work of fighting the rainwater starting before 8am, when an additional pump was installed near the Casa de Cultura (House of Culture) to remove thousands of cubic meters of water across Media Luna beach, back to the Caribbean Sea. On the lowest part of Hidalgo Avenue, at its intersection with Abasolo, the water reached half a meter deep.
Some tourists stayed in their hotels waiting for the water to recede, while others decided to go out and just get wet, and many used alternative routes to get to locations like the town hall, markets, and port terminal. There was also flooding in the lowest areas of colonia Salinas, near the municipal Sports agency, due to litter blocking the storm drains.

The procession is expected to take about three hours. There will be a special brigade to remove the feces, and there will be collaboration with the Traffic police and Civil Protection to ensure a safe event.
