Wave of golf cart battery robberies

Baterías de carritos de golf, botín favorito

Lanrry Parra
In previous months thieves were stealing motorcycle tires and mirrors, and now batteries are being stolen from privately owned golf carts when they are parked in front of the owners homes. A resident of La Gloria wrote on Facebook that she found out who was responsible for the theft of her golf cart battery, thanks to the people who hang out drinking on the corner near her home. She wrote that she found the battery at a house in the colonia of Guadalupana, where a child asked, "Which is your battery? Is it this one?" indicating there were several batteries inside the house. She recorded this comment on video and posted it on the social network.

As part of the commemorative celebrations of the World Environment Day 2015, the Municipal Department of Ecology is conducting interesting events aimed at respecting and preserving our natural environment.
You are invited to participate in creating a mural made of bottle caps

In coordination with the state Ministry of Ecology and Environment,  children, teens, and the general public are invited to participate in the design and implementation of an Urban EcoMural of Responsible Consumerism.
It is a visual work of urban art that is characterized by the use of techniques that do not cause an environmental impact. It is a mural that utilizes items that are reused or recycled, highlighting values of responsibility, solidarity, respect and recycling, which are encouraged on behalf of the environment
The theme is "One planet for everyone. Consume with moderation". Participants must create images or scenes reflecting this message using only plastic bottle caps and mortar as binder. The wall must be at least 2 meters tall by three meters wide, preferably located in public or private places where large numbers of people will see it. It should be taken into account that this is a work that will have a long life.
To raise awareness, it should be known that a bottle cap takes between 150 and 200 years to disintegrate, affecting bodies of water, and the birds and animals that consume them. Detailed information can be obtained from the office of the municipal Department of Ecology located in the lobby of the Mundaca Hacienda.

We invite you to enjoy the Riviera Maya Film Festival, May 28 to 30 May at tge Posada del Mar beach.Free event.

Whale shark tour losses
Pérdidas en tours de avistamiento del “pez dominó”[+] Ver mas
Federal officials confirmed that the whale shark permits had not arrived as of Monday afternoon, although the tours to the area of Aguas Azules (Blue Waters) were scheduled to begin on May 15th. There are indications the permits could be delivered at any time.
It is estimated the season will begin in early June, after the licensees complete procedures required by the Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez. While most of these tours are sold outside the island,  by big travel agencies in Cancun and the Maya Riviera; representatives of hotels who are associated with the transactors say this delay creates a bad image for this destination, because there were contracts for tours from the first day of the season, which had to be cancelled and rescheduled.
According to previous experience, travel agents sell the tours for up to $200 per person, which includes light food, land and sea transportation to and from the Maya Riviera. According to some of the licensees, speaking privately, last season there were tours sold for 700 to 1000 pesos per person. It was proposed six years ago that there should be a set price of $120 per person, but that plan stalled.
Now big business is being done by the intermediaries, at the sacrifice of those who actually invest in safety equipment and take the risks, because traveling 40-50 miles from Punta Sam and Isla Mujeres causes rapid deterioration to the boat equipment. Now with the new operating plan authorized by the DGVS, Department of Wildlife, there will be 320 boats operating on alternating days, in two groups of 160 boats each. Some licensees say this represents a considerable financial risk and makes it impossible to recover an investment of 30,000-50,000 pesos to replace two outboard motors with newer ones, to have radio-communication equipment and other safety equipment, and to maintain the boat.

Birdwatching: An enriching experience
Observación de aves, toda una experiencia[+] Ver mas
On Saturday, in the wooded areas and lagoons of the historic Mundaca Hacienda, 20 high school students from Colegio Bachilleres photographed and watched birds. This activity was coordinated by the Amigos de Isla Contoy and the Birdwatching Club "Green Jay Mayan Birding", with assistance from the municipal Ecology department and the Mundaca Hacienda. Birdwatching is a key tool for environmental conservation.
The activities began at 6am and included a walk to observe and identify birds, a talk about the importance of birdwatching, practice at drawing birds, a breakfast, and planting native trees, said Catalina Galindo de Prince, of Amigos de Isla Contoy.
The workshop was held by the founder of "Green Jay Mayan Birding", Celia Alvarez, assisted by Juan Flores, and they provided the resources. They appreciated the assistance of the director of Ecology, Carlos Barranco, and of the director of Parks and Museums, Fausto Cauich, for providing facilities for the event. A special award was given to Catherine Galindo of all her support for this first workshop, and gratitude to Maria del Mar Lima Fernandez for her collaboration.

Owner of suspended bar claims innocence
Propietario de antro suspendido alega inocencia [+] Ver mas

The owner of "Broncos" piano bar, Hidalgo Pinto Cohuó, said, "There was never a minor inside my business. I know there was a girl outside "Marma" (an adjacent business) laying on the ground, drunk." His piano bar received a municipal suspension this weekend. He said agents from the DIF (municipal social service agency, Sistema Municipal para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia) arrived at his establishment at 11pm on Saturday night, and he says, "But they found nothing." Therefore he requested clarification that the minor was not found inside his business. However, his business was sanctioned.
The involvement of the police, DIF, and Fiscalizacion (Enforcement) occurred in response to an altercation, which led to charges against Elmi Altair García Briceño, 22, who injured one person. According to the owner of Broncos, she also exchanged blows with the minor in front of the building.
For the sanction against Broncos, the Fiscalization imposed a fine of 60,000 pesos and a suspension of operations for not having proper papers, and to await authorization to reopen at any time. The businessman and his wife went to the newspaper to seek clarification of the issue, stating the minor was not inside the establishment, and showed a receipt for payment of the fine.

Turtles continue to come
Siguen llegando los quelonios [+] Ver mas

A few days after the instillation of the Committee for the Protection of Sea Turtles, it has been reported that three nests have already been rescued, said Raciel Coba Rivero, head of the program. They are of the Green turtle species. Hatching occurs after three months of incubation, (The eggs incubate for about two months, and the hatchlings are kept in tanks at the Tortugranja prior to release) and then the traditional massive releases take place, and children are included in the events.
According to historical data, sea turtles have been protected in Isla Mujeres for more than half a century, beginning with a federal employee of the Fishing Department, don Gonzalo Chalé. He was dedicated to this work, and then institutionalized this protection with the government. The Tortugranja is the result of his work.
The Director of the program, Raciel Rivero said these works consist of cleaning and conditioning the four beaches along the eastern side of the island, and preparing the incubation corral for the sea turtle eggs. These preparations were made in the early days of May.
The program involves various municipal departments including Civil Protection, and the Navy, as well as the Committee for Vigilance for the Protection of Sea Turtles.
Historian Fidel Villanueva wrote about  Gonzalo Chalé Maldonado, who loved turtles and died January 29th, 2011, at 93 years of age. In 1957 he began to rescue turtles for his care, when it was legal to slaughter and export them during the spawning season, when large quantities of eggs were thrown by the city pier and being crushed. He put them in containers and took them to an area of beach known as "Punta Gaviotas" (Today it is the  Estación de Investigación Pesquera/Fishing Investigation Station). In the first year, 4000 eggs hatched. Then a federal permit was needed, and it was provided by the federal Fisheries representative at the time, Luis Manzanilla.
Assisted by his family, he developed this work, amid the mosquitoes and chaquiste. ("no see um's", I think) The place required constant care, because of the presence of animals like crabs, mapaches (similar to racoons), sea birds, and dogs who represented a threat. He did not release the turtles at hatching, and fed them scraps of fish from the packing plant "Romeo" and he fed them sardines that he captured. He released hundreds of thousands of hatchlings over the decades, and in 1998 he received a medal "Cross of Ramon Bravo Beach" from the municipal government.
Those who worked with him in these efforts include  Raúl Ramos Padilla, Fernando Fernández Marthen, Manuel Ravell Magaña, Favio Figueroa Paz, Rolando Figueroa Paz, Gonzalo Chalé. And his children:, Marianilla, Manuel, Sigifredo, Margarita, Genoveva, Octavio, Guadalupe, María, Gonzalo, and Alba.

Here it is an 'optional' holiday (office & bank closings vary state to state) commemorating the victory of Mexican troops against a large number of French troops in 1862.
(Then, more French troops arrived, sending Benito Juarez's government into exile, and Maximilian was crowned emperor of Mexico in 1864. At the time, the US was involved with its Civil War, 1861-65.  {Link:How Battle of Puebla affected US Civil War.} Then the US supported Mexico and invoked the Monroe Doctrine against European involvement in the Western Hemisphere. Napoleon III withdrew French troops in 1866.)
