It is expected that 320 boats will work during the whale shark tour season, with only 160 of them operating daily, beginning Friday, May 15th.  This has been determined since April 28th when the official Management Plan was published. The Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil said it should be understood that there is nothing the licensees can do to prevent this.

     It has been unofficially reported that there will be two groups, with odd and even numbers, who will work on alternating days.  Last season there were 243 licensees of whom 135 were from Isla Mujeres, 85 from Holbox, and 23 from Cancun. This year there will be 77 more permits, for a total of 320.

  There are concerns remaining among environmental authorities about the influx of tourists to the  El Meco reef, causing possible damage to the area. It is located opposite of Polygon 1 of the National Park West Coast Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun, and Punta Nizuc (Parque Nacional Costa Occidental Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc). Concern has been expressed by the investigators of CONANP (Comisión Nacional de Areas Naturales Protegidas/ National Commission for Protected Natural Areas) for this area, although it is not part of the ANP (Protected Natural Area).

    They are worried that boats may be exceeding the capacity of the area, which does not have a master plan, and damaging its biodiversity. Boats have been coming to the area for five years, with increasing numbers of visitors.

  In 1973 it was declared a protected area of flora & fauna, but in 1996 when the National Park was established, from the beginning this was not considered among the protected reefs. Without being a protected area, it cannot count on having sustainable management. 

       The reef system protects many species of fish and other creatures that are important, but without a management plan it is susceptible to damage because tour operators view it as a site that is not subject to review by environmental authorities. The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) are responsible for operations of enforcement for these types of activities. There is concern about exploitation of this and other areas, by nautical tourism service providers, particularly during the whale shark tour season from May 15 to September 17.

Sparking cables on Sabalo street

Sparking began two nights ago when a branch came into contact with the electrical lines, which are located in colonia La Gloria, and caused concern among residents. It occurred on Sabalo street between Huachinango and Corvina. Residents say the CFE needs to prune trees near their lines, in coordination with the municipal departments of Ecology and Civil Protection.

The SCT advisory was extended to Monday for sailors on the coast of Quintana Roo due to effects of a phenomenon called "mar de fondo" (swells) that could cause waves up to 2.7 meters in the maritime area. Meanwhile, the Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil, said the SCT alert on Friday caused 'psychosis' among the local fishermen and lanchero boatmen, who were nervous and asked for information, wanting to know if they should bring their boats ashore. He responded that there was no need for that procedure.
   He said the amount of damage that occurred to  towns along the Mexican Pacific coast from a 'mar de fondo' made an impression on people and he explained that while report of this in the Mexican Caribbean caused concern, it does not actually represent a major problem throughout this region. He said this area has its own defenses in the coral reefs that reduce the effects, unlike the Pacific, which is an open and vast ocean.
  As of 6am on Saturday morning, the SCT website was advising that the effects of the swells are expected to be felt on Sunday and Monday. It noted, "Due to the strength of a pressure gradient in the seas near Colombia, this is generating intense wind, favoring increasing waves in the area of the Central Caribbean Sea. That forecast predicted that at 6am on Sunday the waves generated off the seas of Colombia will cause waves from the south to the coasts of Quintana Roo, which may reach a height of 2.1 to 2.7 meters, which are expected to continue for much of the day, generating riptides (corrientes de arrastre) in beach areas, bays, and near docks.
   In this case, Quintana Roo coastal areas are protected by the presence of natural reefs, which act as natural barriers against the waves.  However, small craft boaters, beach tourists, and the coastal population should stay informed and follow the recommendations of the System of Civil Protection and heed the instructions of the Harbor Master.
  The forecast for Monday
    It is expected that on Monday morning there will be waves generated in the Colombian seas of up to 3.3 meters and off the coast of Quintana Roo of 2.1 to 2.7 meters, generating riptide currents in beach areas, bays, and dock areas.  On Sunday it is expected that the winds from the East may be 21 to 25kph, with waves up to 2 feet and that the port will be open to navigation in general all day, with cautions for the smaller vessels that go out.

In Week 8 of the children's soccer league the Isla Mujeres team "Los Tuzos" won 3 to 1 against "Atlante", in the league "Guillermo Canedo". A description of the game is given. The public is invited to attend the game of the children's category on Sunday, starting at 9:30am to support the team Ninos Heroes in this same league, playing in Cancun at the stadium "Benito Juarez".

        (Then, more French troops arrived, sending Benito Juarez's government into exile, and Maximilian was crowned emperor of Mexico in 1864.
