 Conference "Dale 'Like' for Life"

Celebran conferencia “Dale Like a la Vida”

Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 6 de mayo.- .
This conference was one of the preventative and educational programs conducted by the DIF, social service agency ( Desarrollo Integral de la Familia), who invited all young islanders with the aim of providing tools to benefit their self esteem, leadership in their environment, and to have a broader view of life. The event was attended by the Mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez, and it was opened by his wife, Marthy Vargas de Magana, who is president of the DIF in Isla Mujeres.
The Mayor shared parts of his life in a friendly and positive manner, inviting them to see what can be achieved in life, based on studying, and what one can do. The conference included more than ten 'master coaches' who conveyed the message to the teens, assisted by slides, videos, plays, testimonies, and various activities.
Schools participating in the conference include the high school Colegio Bachilleres, the middle school Benito Juarez, and their sister schools in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres. The workshop was also held in Playa del Carmen and Cancun, and focuses on reaching as far as one can and the possibilities of improvement.

Residents complain about phone cables on the sidewalks

Por cables telefónicos sobre banquetas

Lanrry PARRA
ISLA MUJERES, 6 de mayo.-

Residents are complaining about Telmex phone cables (Telefones de Mexico) along the sidewalks in some areas of the island. At Punta Sur on the Caribbean side, there are at least three points where cables are on the ground, and in the colonias there is a similar number.
Residents say when this occurs in the neighborhoods, it is taken care of more quickly, but not at the south end of the island. There are also residents who complain that service should be more quickly restored when there is an outage,  that the cables should be repaired before they fail, and Telmex internet service has deficiencies at times.

Alert about a 'mar de fondo' / "swells" of short duration
Alerta por “mar de fondo” de corta duración.. [+] Ver mas
An alert was published Friday by the Ministry of Communications and Transport (SCT) for fishermen and marine service providers to take precautions tomorrow morning, confirmed the Isla Mujeres Harbor Master, Ismael Gonzalez Gil.
The document says, "Current forecasting models indicate that a new event of 'mar del fondo' (swells) of short duration could affect the coasts of Quintana Roo and the Yucatan Channel  on Sunday morning, May 10th, with possible waves up to 2.7 meters (9 ft). Close monitoring is being done and for small craft boaters are advised to take precautionary measures, also the coastal population due to the presence of dangerous riptide currents (peligrosas corrientes de arrastre) in beach areas, docks, and harbors."
The Harbor Master explained that this phenomenon is due to high pressures that dominate the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, which are interacting with the moist air from the Caribbean Sea, resulting in partly cloudy skies with scattered mist and warm to very warm temperatures. Because of this event, the winds along the coast of Quintana Roo will be from the east at 25-35kph or 11-16 knots with higher gusts.
He said this phenomena has always existed in this area, with the difference being that among the older fishermen it is known as "marea boba" (stupid tide), however he reiterated the recommendation that small craft boaters take extreme caution in the coastal and maritime areas of Quintana Roo.
In 2010, on August 28th, with the progress of Hurricane Danielle east-southeast of Bermuda, the SCT issued an alert about a potential 'mar de fondo' swell to hit the east coast of Mexico, but Isla Mujeres felt no effects.
   Interaction with storm "Ana"
According to the weather forecast by the SCT, Tropical Storm Ana opened the hurricane season in the Atlantic for 2015, and there is a prediction of seven storms and a hurricane during this season. Ana had produced winds up to 75kph with expectations of strengthening while advancing northeast toward the US.

Ferry out of service for a couple days
Embarcación ya lleva varios días sin servicio[+] Ver mas

The Magana ferry did not resume service on Friday, and this could continue on Saturday, following a mechanical failure that left the ferry out for service for a third day. It went out of service before noon on Wednesday, and is expected to be back in service on Saturday.
The Harbor Master confirmed that it was not adrift nor in the middle of the Bay when it had the mechanical failure, as occurred a few weeks ago with an Ultramar ferry. The official noted that mechanical problems can happen at any time for any boat that works long hours on a continual basis. He said there is no plan to impose any fine upon the company, because this is an inconvenience that normally happens to companies in this industry, and the company gave notification at the time of the problem it had encountered.
Less than a month ago, the Magana ferry was out of service for several days. Frequent users say the are watching for it to return to service because it is less expensive.

7th Water Rally held
Se desarrolló el VII Rally del Agua] Ver mas

Around 250 people participated Friday, including 15 teams, each with five members, in a competition that tested both mental and physical skills and endurance. They performed tests at various stations, and earned points by answering questions whose answers they has learned from a study guide.
DHC-Aguakan sponsored the rally, which focused on topics about the water cycle, how the vital liquid reaches homes, conservation, wastewater treatment, how the company contributes to the protection of our environment, and the history of Isla Mujeres.
The contestants came from municipalities of Benito Juarez (Cancun), Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen), and Isla Mujeres, and families and friends enjoyed the event. Afterwards there was a musical event at the Posada del Mar beach. This event raises awareness and empowers young people and the community in general to be ambassadors for the preservation of the planet, and this is most important.

May 5. Tuesday: Cinco de Mayo (Battle of Puebla). No school. This date is commemorated more enthusiastically in the US, as general celebration of Mexican culture (and opportunity for abundant consumption of salsa, chips, and Mexican beer.).
Here it is an 'optional' holiday (office & bank closings vary state to state) commemorating the victory of Mexican troops against a large number of French troops in 1862.
(Then, more French troops arrived, sending Benito Juarez's government into exile, and Maximilian was crowned emperor of Mexico in 1864. At the time, the US was involved with its Civil War, 1861-65.  {Link:How Battle of Puebla affected US Civil War.} Then the US supported Mexico and invoked the Monroe Doctrine against European involvement in the Western Hemisphere. Napoleon III withdrew French troops in 1866.)
