ISLA MUJERES, 18 de marzo.-
A group of 17 students from the University of Southern California arrived in Isla Mujeres for four days, to perform altruistic jobs and environmental work for the benefit of the local community. Students from this school have been arriving annually for fifteen years, and they make it clear that not all "springbreakers" come to binge on tequila, beer, and other excesses, but that some come to enjoy and support the communities they visit.
The group spent four days in Akumal before coming to Isla Mujeres, where they did work relating to the protection of sea turtles. In Isla Mujeres, they will do ecological work at the primary schools “Andrés Quintana Roo” and “César Mendoza Santana”, and they will perform work cleaning beaches and doing reforestation plantings.
These activities will be supported and assisted by representatives of the government and the mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez, including: the muncipal DIF social service agency, headed by Marthy Vargas de Magaña; Public Services Dept. headed by Manuel Figueroa; the municipal treasurer, Alvaro Magaña Galué; the historian of Isla Mujeres, Fidel Villanueva; the head of the municipal department of Ecology, Carlos Barranco; and the head of Protección Civil, Mauro Rodríguez. As well as assistance and support from the Navy, the Taxi Union, the cargo Transborder ferry, and the Port Authority of Isla Mujeres (API).
After being received by the Mayor, who has supported these works for the second year, they immediately went to the Andres Quintana Roo primary school to replant the green areas, and to interact with the students.

The annual collection will start with the annual march, including participation by the young students of the various kindergartens of the island, departing from the stairs at the Naval Base and terminating at the Town Square.
Those taking part in the march will travel most of Rueda Medina Avenue, starting at the Naval base and finishing at the town square, where the official ceremony will be held, and local officials will offer the first donations. During the annual campaign in 2014, they raised 200,000 pesos, and this year they hope to exceed that amount. The chairman of the board, Jorge Cardenas Bazan, said the contribution of every citizen is important, so that the institution can continue to support the work they do and to provide medical transport and respond to requests for assistance. Their expenditures continue to increase with payments for fuel, electricity, water, phone, and for the services of paramedics and other workers at the institution.

An interesting workshop was held Wednesday morning for the students of the Middle School Benito Juarez, by the municipal Department of Ecology with the theme: Reduce, recycle, reuse.
The workshop was taught by young volunteers from the high school Colegio Bachilleres, focusing on the three R's, and included development of various products as arts and crafts. They used recycled materials including paper, cardboard, wood, plastic, newspaper, etc and created ornamental items and macetas (pots?), and were encouraged to consider earning income from these types of objects.
Next month the high school students plan to conduct the workshops in the elementary schools and kindergartens.
In addition to this workshop, the high school students gave talks on awareness about recycling and solid waste management to the elementary students of Andres Quintana Roo, and plan to offer these talks at other schools.
As part of the Eco Schools program, high school students of Colegio Bachilleres gave talks about recycling awareness and management of solid waste at the primary school Andres Quintana Roo.

For fifteen consecutive years, university students of the State of California, USA, have come to Isla Mujeres, invited by the Civil Association of environmentalists, "Green Patrol/Patrulla Verde". They perform tasks such as beach cleaning, painting public spaces, and conduct recreational games to raise environmental awareness. They will be in the island March 18-20.
Por quince años consecutivos, jóvenes estudiantes del Estado de California, EUA, llegaron a Isla Mujeres invitados por la Asociación Civil Patrulla Verde a realizar labores ecologistas como: limpieza de playas, pintura de espacios públicos, realización de juegos lúdicos de concientización ambientalista; estarán en la ínsula del 18 al 20 del mes en curso.

With the closing of the lobster catching season, 65 fishermen suffered decompression

Isla Mujeres.It is a little over two weeks since the close of lobster season, and today the Board for the Hyperbaric Chamber of Isla Mujeres reported there were 65 fishermen treated for decompression during the season. This is an increase of eight cases over last season.
Not only Isla Mujeres fishermen made use of the hyperbaric chamber, they also reated fishermen from Holbox, Chiquila, and the entire northern coast of Quintana Roo.
Although the chamber no longer serves the fishermen with the closure of the lobster season, they will be treating diabetic patients referred to them by the DIF and Ministry of Health.

She conducted the interview at the local office of SEMARNAT, (Ministry of Environment & Natural Resources), where she heads the Department of the Chinchorro Banco Biosphere. She said she has been in contact with the licensees, the TAC (Technical Advisory Council) and the Friends of Isla Contoy Association to determine the overall situation and strategies.
Also, the Director of the Whale Shark Biospheres said in Contoy there is permission to transfer 32 boats with a total daily capacity of 804 tourists, while the maximum number allowed is 200. Therefore the number disembarking from various boats must be reduced, so that this limit is no longer being violated.
She outlined the basic objectives of the Park at Contoy, (which is part of CONANP, the National Commission for Natural Protected Areas), which are to prevent impact, to maintain trails and an adequate pier, and to construct more bathrooms for tourists to use, as well as additional trails and platforms for observing and monitoring birds. The museum has been given maintenance on two occasions, but there have been problems with the bathrooms when the limit for the number of tourists is exceeded.
She said, "Now I have been working with the service providers to find a solution and there is cooperation and volunteerism on their part. We are working with cooperation and coordination, they are also concerned." She said she received a report from the service providers in Contoy, including the president of the CTA, Fidel Villanueva Madrid, to identify the problems and to inspect the area in order to find solutions.
The Friends of Isla Contoy Association have committed to participating in a work program immediately and are waiting this week for the resolution about doing maintenance on the infrastructure, the restoration of the pier, and keeping track of the entrance of boats to prevent exceeding the capacity limits.

One of the promoters of this program is Roman Maldonado fo the CROC union, and members were encouraged to participate, as a developmental activity promoting health and job training. There were more women that men attending, as is often the case when asking parents to come to the schools, with the issue allegedly of work, usually.
