Exorbitant charges for collection of trash
Exorbitantes cobros por recoja de basura [+] Ver mas
Among those asking for exemption from the costs of trash collection are the schools and the cabbies. The schedule of rates approved by the Legislature for the fiscal year 2013, are the same as have been applied this year The schedule determines what the businesses must pay each month, based on the square footage of their commercial building. The rate is set for the first sixty square meters, and is another 15% for each additional twenty square meters.
As was reported here previously, business community leaders of CANACO & CANIRAC, Juan Carillo Figueroa y Baltazar Maldonado, have asked the City Council members to review the schedule and reduce the rates by fifty percent. It has also been claimed that it is unconstitutional to charge businesses and not residents for trash collection.
The established rates are different for three zones and are between 2599 pesos and 3397 pesos monthly as follows: artesanías, between 1510  and 1155; loncherías & taquerías, between 184 and 140; torterías, between 328 and 251; cocinas económicas, between 196 and 150; restaurants without alcoholic drinks, between 222 and 170; coctelerías without alcoholic drinks between 328 and 251.
Tortillerías pay between 208 and 159 monthly; taxis pay per unit between 107 and 82; schools, between 400 a 306 pesos, and golf cart rental agencies, 630 pesos, monthly.
The deadline is October 31st to present the proposal for review and approval to the state legislature for the upcoming fiscal year. It is noted that the mayor made a campaign promise to recalculate this rates for trash collection.

Minor accident between golf cart & scooter
Caos vial por leve accidente[+] Ver mas

On Thursday, a rented golf cart containing Russian tourists was traveling northward on Rueda Medina near the Posada beach when they got into an accident with a scooter driven by young Marcelino Arjona. Traffic was blocked at the intersection of Medina and Matamoros, and the tourists wanted to continue toward North Beach. The detour is caused by the CFE (Federal Electrical Commission) connecting the underground network.
The tourists did not know where to go, and went the wrong way along the bay side of Medina (the main street), which generated problems. They came into contact with the black Italika scooter, damaging its headlight protector, causing less than 500 pesos in damage. Witnesses said the motorcyclist was distracted when the cart advanced toward him, and he stopped at the last minute, with a minor contact between the vehicles.
Jesus Contreras Gomez, from the cart rental agency, said the problem was caused by badly placed signs, since the route had been blocked before at Abasolo, so golf carts had the alternative to take this street to continue towards North Beach. It is noted that this issue of signage could generate more accidents, because minutes later another vehicle was on the verge of going the wrong way also, but nearby people alerted them.

Threat of strike at General Hospital: Problems continue

Continúan los problemas

Hospital workers have indicated that their disagreements are not with the Director of the General Hospital, David Valenzo Loaeza, but rather with the administrator, Marinelly Trejo. On Tuesday they met with the Director General of the Ministry of Health, and union representatives with the state. Workers explained that of the 34 unionized employees of the hospital, 32 are in opposition to the administrator. They added there are about 110 workers in the hospital, of whom 34 are unionized, noting that over 100 employees are supportive of the Director, and almost all are opposed to the administrator.
Among issues causing friction with the administrator is the lack of assistance for payment of gasoline for the radiologist, although gasoline vouchers have been provided.

Families have begun the work of decorating small altars in their homes with traditional offering, which can be very expensive. Some families may spend over 500 pesos. Flowers for sale include chrysanthemum, gladiolus, tuberose, lily, nube & terciopelo (Lit.: cloud & velvet). In the case of mums, or cempasúchitl, the price is unchanged from last year, remaining at 20 or 25 pesos for a big bunch. Candles and special sweets are also for sale, as well as the traditional mucbipollo (tamale). Last month the price of gas increased (propane...used for cooking) which affects the cost of preparations for Hanal Pixan, or "food for the souls". The most important dates during this time are November 1 & 2.

The leader of CANACO (The Chamber of Commerce), Juan Carrillo, and Baltazar Maldonado, the leader of CANIRAC (Restaurant organization), together with the hoteliers, are asking that the City Council modify the regulations about commercial trash fees, before the time for this initiative runs out before the Quintana Roo legislature. The two men recalled that when the mayor was campainging he pledged to reconsider the increase, but time has passed and the controversial tabulation of 2012 resulted in a significant increase.  They are seeking a decrease of 50 percent from what is currently charged, which would apply for the fiscal year 2015, if it goes before the legislature before the time period expires.
