Asking for street repairs of the damage done installing water lines

Ante daños provocados por constructora que introdujo tuberías

Lanrry PARRA
Aguacan has completed the installation of larger pipes for the tap water supply to the colonias of Caridad del Cobre, Miraflores, La Gloria, and Canotal. Now the residents want repairs to the damage that was done to the pavement during these improvements. They want this done as soon as possible becaus this is a popular north - south route and could be harmful to their vehicles. The work affected about 4 kilometers of roads. So far they have filled in the gaps that were opened for the introduction of the larger pipes, and it is expected they will add the pavement in upcoming days. Aguakan workers are still at the repair area working, and it is hoped this will include repairing the damage to the streets.

Great momentum for the wheelchair basketball workshop

Clínica de básquetbol

Lanrry PARRA
The first Wheelchair Basketball Clinic will be held September 16-20th at the park "Las Hormiguitas Obreras" (the worker ants) in Meteorologica.  There will also be other types of sports adapted for people with disabilities. This clinic is being coordinated by the municipal and state DIF agencies, and all people in wheelchairs are invited. to participate.
There is an open invitation to all islanders, and is not only aimed at people with physical disabilities, but also to people who want to learn how to implement this type of basketball. Those interested in participating can visit the offices of the DIF on Lizeta street in colonia la Gloria between 9am and 4pm.
This method of basketball originated in 1946 by ex players in the US who wanted to experience an athletic sport after they had suffered war injuries. These types of events include not only teaching, but motivation to succeed, and encouragement that they can live in a healthy and pleasant manner.

Union workers given solidarity breaks

Trabajadores de la CROC acceden a "descansos solidarios" en apoyo a empresas

Lanrry PARRA
Some companies want CROC union workers to take three solidarity break days per fortnight during this off season, which would give most workers a total of five days off during their 15 day work periods. This is not covered under the Labor Laws, but the Solidarity Break Days are used to prevent layoffs, explained the union leader, Román Maldonado Euán. Workers are given vacations and more days off during this slower season, which is expected to improve in November, when the situation usually improves for workers in general.

The leader of the Chamber of Commerce, Juan Carillo Figueroa, described the current situation in Isla Mujeres during the off season as "suffocating".  He said there are few hotels rooms occupied, and many businesses, including stores, restaurants, and bars are also suffering from a lack of customers, and some have closed, including restaurants that have spent many years operating in Isla Mujeres.

36 diver-fishermen treated for decompression

Suman 36 hombres de mar atendidos por baja presión

Yesterday two more fishermen were treated for decompression at the hyperbaric chamber, bringing the total this lobster season to 36 men. The first was José Ricalde Mucul, 51, of the fishing cooperative Isla Blanca. He said he took two dives of 40 minutes each to a depth of 140 feet. He had pain in his right arm and was diagnosed with a case of moderate decompression.
The second case was Rafael Valdés Maldonado, 30, of the fishing cooperative Puerto Juarez. He said he dove down to a depth of 120 feet, twice during an hour, with a thirty minute rest break. He presented with pain in his left forearm, and also received treatment at the hyperbaric chamber.
As of this date last year, only 12 fishermen had been treated for decompression. The doctor said that many fishermen are not careful, some enter the sea after they have been drinking alcohol, and others are driven to dive deeper because they need to make a livelihood and to bring home results.

Raising awareness about care of sea turtle nests

Concientizan sobre el cuidado de nidos

  • Written by Diario Respuesta  Jesus Molina
  • Category: Isla Mujeres
Every year from May 15th to October 30th in Isla Mujeres, authorities and the general public join efforts to work together to help with the survival of one of the oldest species on the planet. The sea turtles appearance on land dates back 250 million years before the era of dinosaurs.
The results are encouraging, and the statistics for this year are as follows: Hawksbill: 10 nests with 1415 eggs, and 855 hatchlings.  Loggerhead: 128 nests with 14,073 eggs, and 7280 hatchlings. Green: 339 nests with 35,401 eggs, 1758 hatchlings.  (This probably explains why there have not been any public releases yet, since only the Greens are released publicly & less than 2000 have hatched out so far.)
During the 2014, educational talks have been given about the life of these ancient beings. Civic organizations, volunteers, and schools share the same goal with the Tortugranja, to care for and protect sea turtles. It is noted that from 1965 to 1975,  Gonzalo Chalé began the artificial incubation of turtle eggs for the conservation of these species, and thanks to his great efforts, the island is a pioneer in these experiments.

Karen Rosenberg's
NEED DIABETES SUPPLIES FOR OCTOBER DIABETES CLINIC: We have been doing Diabetes Clinics on Isla Mujeres for five years, with more local residents participating annually. This is a joint project of bilingual social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals originally from the USA, working with Isleno community partners. Diabetes is now the primary cause of death in Mexico.
We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. If you have any contact with medical professionals or pharmaceutical reps, you can often get current supplies. We can also use lancets, lancet devices, alcohol pads, and syringes.
The next clinic will be in October 2014. Contact Karen Rosenberg at kfrlisw@gmail.com or Kathy Ennis at kathy@kathyandkeith.mx or FB either of us. We accept monetary donations too and will buy strips to bring down.
