El que recibió ayer el municipio del Presidente Peña Nieto: Agapito

The Mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez,  received a check from the Federal "Habitat" program which will benefit the inhabitants of the island. The plans for the money include the following improvements: Salina Grande walkway lighting, workshop and courses for the benefit of residents, and expansion of the Community Development Center in La Gloria, including its equipment. Many officials were in attendance, whose names are included in the article. I didn't see the amount of the check in the article.

Ninety-four people from the townships of Tulum, Solidaridad, Cozumel, Lazaro Cardenas, Benito Juarez and Isla Mujeres, received 148 hearing aids from the state DIF social service agency,  who spent 462,500 pesos to provide them. This included five people from Isla Mujeres who received ten hearing aids. Isla Mujeres was chosen for the location to distribute them symbolically, and the names of the officials in attendance are given in the article.
The Beneficencia Pública de Quintana Roo (State Public Aid) joined its program Receive the Gift of Hearing “Recibe el regalo de oír”  with the program To Hear Better “Para oírte mejor”, to assist deaf and hard of hearing residents to become productive members of society.
The Mayor mentioned that he attended an important meeting the previous day about the disease Chikungunya, which originated in Thailand. He urged families to keep their yards and patios clean to prevent proliferation of mosquitoes. He said in the Dominican Republic, where no preventative measures were implemented, the spread of the illness caused a 70% drop in tourism.

Reciben en el hospital equipo de cirugía

I already translated an article about the General Hospital receiving surgical equipment for orthopedic trauma, and this one notes the director of the Hospital David Valenzo Loaeza,  thanked the state Health Secretary Juan Ortegón Pacheco,(who was in town & among the officials included in other articles, who I didn't paste into the translations).  It also notes that since last year they have had equipment to perform laproscopic operations.

    Remodelarán la zona del malecón

    0 02 de agosto de 2014
There will be about five million pesos invested in renovating the first part of the eastern malecon, which has an area of 900 linear meters. The first part of the project includes fixtures, benches, paving/flooring (pisos), and public toilets, starting at the Casa de Cultura. For the second stage they are considering building outdoor showers and lockers.
The renovation of the eastern malecon will includes plans for public restrooms, which are a requirement for the certification of the public beaches that is being sought by the city government. It is difficult to find a space on the beaches for public toilets, since the spaces are all franchised. Regarding the building of restrooms on some public beach, the City has not dismissed this possibility, and is seeking to reach an agreement with any concession holder who is interested in donating a portion of their space to provide these services. If that cannot be found, there is the possibility of building public toilets in the area of the Convention Center, at the Municipal Mercado, but this is still being analyzed, said the director of Public Works, Miguel Ariel Caballero Garcia.

Crowded beaches lack lifeguards
Playas repletas y guardavidas ausentes[+] Ver mas
At three in the afternoon, until people retire for the evening, people can be seen enjoying the eastern beaches during this holiday period. The majority are young people, but there are tourists and families also. One of the most popular sites is in front of the Aguakan wastewater treatment plant, where there is a sand bank and danger for novice swimmers because of the presence of relatively strong waves, especially on days of greater lunar influence.
The beach Playa Acapulquito also has people, which is front of colonia Amplification La Gloria. Cliffs prevent access to parts of this coast, but many go down to the rocky area to cool off and to swim or fish.
The Civil Protection agency recommends every precaution be taken, saying these areas are not recommended for general public access, and the agency has placed red flags because these areas are considered dangerous. Residents have suggested lifeguards be stationed in these areas.

No improvement in trash collection
No mejora la recolección de basura [+] Ver mas
This includes the same information as previously translated about planning a pilot program for night time trash collection, beginning in La Gloria.
The head of Public Services, Manuel Figueroa, said the pick up service is currently only available on the morning shift, and when people set their trash out in the afternoon and evening, it gets scattered by cats and dogs. He recommended that people form a committee of vigilance of service, in order to set out  trash in containers at the correct time when the trucks are collecting, and  to coordinate the schedules.
He said currently a majority put their trash out at bedtime, and after the truck picks up before 'office hours' , the streets are clean, but then the minority put their trash out after the pick up, and this is where the problem lies.
As usual, high seasons of tourism generate large volumes for the vehicles and personnel that collect trash and clean the beaches. There are not adequate numbers vehicles available because some are out of order with mechanical failures. The amount of trash at the Trash Transfer facility has increased significantly since the beginning of  the summer holiday period.

Colonia Guadalupana: Street needs attention
La Guadalupana, dejada “a la deriva” [+] Ver mas
Due to erosion and gravity, sand from the entrance of the 'irregular' colonia of Guadalupana invades the road and has caused mishaps. Hundreds of vehicles pass through this area daily, including golf carts, taxis, private cars, motorcycles and bicycles. This season more vendors have set up stands in front of the colonia, where about 200 families live on the same number of lots. Some construction workers living in the area estimate the problem could repaired with the donation of a couple bags of cement.

Karen Rosenberg's
NEED DIABETES SUPPLIES FOR OCTOBER DIABETES CLINIC: We have been doing Diabetes Clinics on Isla Mujeres for five years, with more local residents participating annually. This is a joint project of bilingual social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals originally from the USA, working with Isleno community partners. Diabetes is now the primary cause of death in Mexico.
We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. If you have any contact with medical professionals or pharmaceutical reps, you can often get current supplies. We can also use lancets, lancet devices, alcohol pads, and syringes.
The next clinic will be in October 2014. Contact Karen Rosenberg at kfrlisw@gmail.com or Kathy Ennis at kathy@kathyandkeith.mx or FB either of us. We accept monetary donations too and will buy strips to bring down.
