Dozens of boats participated in the ceremony placing a wreath above the Cross of the Bay to commemorate 20 years since it was installed. The mayor Agapito Magaña Sánchez was in charge of the event and was accompanied by his wife Marthy Varguez de Magaña.
The procession began at the church of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception at about 9am, and moved through the downtown area to the vehicle ferry dock, where one of the ferries sailed out into the bay at 10:30 am.  At about 11am there was a Mass to mark the 20th anniversary of the immersion of the "Cruz de la Bahia", in the area of Los Manchones.

The Catholic Church is planning a retreat for married couples on October 3, 4, & 5th at the Hotel Cristalmar, and expecting 40 couples to attend. At the event last year, there were thirty couples at the event and last weekend 14 couples spent three days at "Marriage Encounter" retreat at a local hotel. The priest Raul Sanchez Alonzo said the previous events were successful at strengthening the bonds between the couples and making them more united.

The City Council held their official commemoration of the 164th anniversary of the founding of Isla Mujeres on Sunday evening, which was attended by representatives of all three levels of government. At the event, recognition was given to the winner of the first Women's Fishing Tournament on June 14th, Imar Concepción Martínez Nájera. The Citizen's Merit award, was given to Don Romualdo Velázquez Delgado, for his essay "Mahache", which won second place in the national contest titled "The Old Man & The Sea". The Tourism Merit award was given to licensees of the whale sharks.
The Mayor, Agapito Magana Sanchez said, "Those who live on the island, those who live in the continental zone, those who were born here, and those who came after to contribute their best to improving this location; we are all isleños (islanders)."  He also spoke emotionally about the contributions, dedication,  and commitment of Professor Gilberto Avalos Galue, who recently died. Other speeches were made, and the official's names are given in the article.

  • Increasing security at Salina Grande

Refuerzan la seguridad en Salina Grande0 18 de agosto de 2014
In response to citizen complaints about burglaries and a lack of security in the area, the police chief, Joaquin Poot Acosta said they are increasing patrols in Salina Grande at the walking path. Residents also complained about a lack of lighting, and now there is better lighting at the path, said the police chief. The foot patrols will be equipped with radios, so they can request support if there is a problem.
Last June the City Council approved hiring 40 officers, and now that the increase has been achieved, the police chief said they plan to meet several commitments on the island, as well as on the mainland. As a result, there is now more staff to assign to areas where it was previously difficult to give coverage.

The pilgrimage taking the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre to Isla Contoy will take place on September 6th. This annual traditional event includes hundreds of people, and recently the fishermen had a meeting and a tour of Isla Contoy to determine what is needed for the event. The Virgin icon is taken from the chapel of the Church of Immaculate Conception aboard a boat for the pilgrimage by sea to Isla Contoy, where a Mass is celebrated. The leader of the fishermen in Isla Mujeres, Baltazar Gómez Catzín, said about 100 boats are expected to participate and the cruise takes about 50 minutes. He said last year about 80  vessels participated.

Plan to construct a "Casa de la  Crónica ": Lacks funding yet
Hay plan de construir la casa de la crónica[+] Ver mas
The town historian, Fidel Villanueva Madrid,  responded in an email to the comments made in Por Esto yesterday by former councilman Emilio Sosa Medina. He said there are plans to build a  Casa de la Crónica de Isla Mujeres, but resources are needed for the project. He also explained that he performs several functions simultaneously as a public servant, but he receives no salary for his work as the town historian (cronista), and that he does this as an honorary service, without income.
He said that the laws governing the performance of his duties allow him to produce his work from his home, and to house the historical materials there. He said it has been five years since the plans were made for the Casa de la Cronica of Isla Mujeres, but no resources have been allotted yet.
He said he also serves as Chairman of the Technical Advisory Board of the Isla Contoy National Park, in an honorary, unpaid capacity, as well being a consultant for the project of cultural rescue that is taking place currently at the Hacienda Vista Alegre of Fermin Mundaca, also altruistically, without charging a penny.
"I regret that there are people who accuse me without being able to prove their allegations. Your assumptions are just that and nothing more, " said Sr. Villanueva in the final part of his email.
Sr Sosa replied by saying the historical materials should be readily available as reference tools for students, researchers, and tourists, and asked which law empowers the historian to "virtually own what is the cultural heritage of the town".
Sr. Villanueva works for the City as the head of the municipal union, and Sr. Sosa alleged that he was collecting pay from two jobs simultaneously, which would be illegal. That translation & link to that article yesterday is HERE.

Suicide by official is confirmed

The death certificate released by authorities on Sunday morning confirmed that the cause of death of politician  Gilberto Ávalos Galué was asphyxia by hanging. His funeral Mass was scheduled at 4pm at the Church of the Sacred Heart on Sunday, followed by interment at the municipal cemetery in colonia La Gloria. The road in front of his house, which is on the way to Garrafon, was partially closed so that friends and family could participate. On social networks islanders were expressing grief and condolences to the family.
Sr. Avalos left five teenagers, and many friends in political, sports, and social spheres. His last public office was representing Isla Mujeres at the Department of Education of Quintana Roo. He served as a mentor for three decades at the primary school  “Andrés Quintana Roo”, but in recent years has delegated this responsibility to a colleague. He has had direct contact with several generations of students, who expressed surprise and consternation at his sudden death. There is conjecture that economic difficulties may have been a factor in his suicide. Authorities have said they have no reason to suspect any foul play.

This article contains information that has already been translated about the cultural events and exhibits associated with the 164 anniversary of the founding of the town,  plus comments that there was a lack of translations for the visitors who do not know Spanish. An unnamed hotel manager said frequently their guests encounter a "tower of Babel" at these cultural programs, and noted that this issue was raised when the current administration was campaigning.

Karen Rosenberg's
NEED DIABETES SUPPLIES FOR OCTOBER DIABETES CLINIC: We have been doing Diabetes Clinics on Isla Mujeres for five years, with more local residents participating annually. This is a joint project of bilingual social workers, nurses, and other health care professionals originally from the USA, working with Isleno community partners. Diabetes is now the primary cause of death in Mexico.
We are in great need of donations of glucometers and strips, specifically these brands: Contour, Contour Next and OneTouch. Many doctor's offices, clinics and hospitals discard strips that are almost expired. Strips are actually still effective for at least a year after expiration dates so often those are the ones that are most often donated. If you have any contact with medical professionals or pharmaceutical reps, you can often get current supplies. We can also use lancets, lancet devices, alcohol pads, and syringes.
The next clinic will be in October 2014. Contact Karen Rosenberg at kfrlisw@gmail.com or Kathy Ennis at kathy@kathyandkeith.mx or FB either of us. We accept monetary donations too and will buy strips to bring down.
